Thank you Steve for that video.. I giggled like a little girl hearing it.. Full Black Ohlins, 160hp.. OMG might be a perfect streetbike for me.. Hmmm..

Its a PaniMonster..

I am glad they updated the electronics & Ohlins, but I still like my Duke better for the street.

I find the Monster to be too low to the ground, but some great improvements here forsure!

My fear is that the 160 hp is woefully optimistic. If this engine is lifted from the Mutli, I saw dyno results that were very low 130s.

Reviews have the XR stomping the Multi.

I hope that is not the case.... Looks like a great package so far!

I'd lovingly take the SD before this as a streetbike. But they seem to keep selling out here quickly..

Seeing someone ride a Monster like that just looks wrong.

Maybe you could have called it an SP or something but to call it an R is just embarrassing. The Monster is a street bike, not an aggressive street/track crossover bike like the Streetfighter was. If they wanted to put a super naked against the S1000R and 1290 SDR it had to be a totally new Street Fighter not a Monster with a few tweaks.

Terrible decision.

I understand your point, but I wonder the price

This could be a factor for the popularity.

It is not the DVT motor actually. Just a higher compression dual spark motor with bigger throttles. Think previous gen Multi with small upgrades.

I agree on the streetfighter direction.... This bike will not be able to compare well to those bikes...

I like the bike, but it is much more of a "cruiser" than a naked bike. This will compete more against the Diavel. Weird direction?

I do like the hp bump thou....

Those dyno results were bogus, the Motorcyclist magazine guys didn't know how to set the electronics up for dyno use. Ducati is trying to get them to issue a correction for their ineptitude. Look at the comparison article in Rider magazine for a more realistic comparison between the 2 bikes.

But as stated previously, we now know the engine in the Monster R is not the DVT from the Multi, it's the same engine from the regular Monster 1200S but with larger throttle bodies, higher compression, revised heads, secondary air intake system, and a few other tweaks. It should realistically be 160 at the crank vs. the Monster 1200S's 145 at the crank due to better breathing and higher compression, and I'm sure revised engine mapping too for "R" character.

not sure i understand where this bike sits it's not a track bike so the R tag is a little misleading and i don't get how it fits in with the current line up.

I can only see this cannibalizing sales for the current set up but with the diavel being a better set up for a 1200cc displacement bike and the hyper/multi being better as touring and multi purpose bikes.

Like others have said i think a streetfighter would have been a better bike to put into the lineup but maybe that's to come (but i think i'm being too optimistic).

I would've liked more meat in that trailer, and less bling and fancy colors and crap splattering in the air. Turned me off to a bike I was excited about.

What turned me off is the lack of a QS and blipper, should be a must nowadays. I guess my GF keeps her 1200S and I'll install an aftermarket solution.

A nice thing on the "R" is the separation of the passenger footpegs, but there are plenty of 3rd party solutions (Ducabike, CNC Racing, rtc.) on the market now for the base and "S" monster.

So what's left are the additional 15hp... I'll wait until I see a dyno (although I've never seen one for the "S" :) ). Btw am I right it's not the DVT testastretta?

EDIT: just read jarels post. Okay, no DVT, which is good.
Another concern: M1200S has emission standard Euro3, the "R" will be Euro 4 (which is far more restrictive). There goes the sound and the performance...

That's why they put the secondary air system on it, can run cleaner emissions and a better fuel map for more power at the same time, same as the Panigales have on them.

I really didn't want this to be the new bike. Like most I wanted a 1199 SF. I miss my SF S all the time, it was brutal, sexy and I loved every second of riding it. The 1199 engine in a naked bike would have been the ultimate SF. To me it was like a unicorn, rare and hard to tame. Oh well, one can dream...

looks like they just took the Diavel motor and stuck it in a chassis that looks more suited to what the Diavel can do - a lot of people look at the Diavel and prejudge it on its styling. It takes saddle time on that thing to appreciate that it's actually a great bike.

So I imagine this Monster 1200 "R" is to cater to the people who actually like the Diavel as is, while they prepare the Diavel to become a true belt-driven forward-peg cruiser. I can't for the life of me see how that's going to work out, but then again, remember when Porsche said they were going to make an SUV?

I also wholeheartedly agree that they should have called it an SP, EVO, anything but "R". To me, R means race homologation, and Ducati would only build as many R versions of a bike that they are actively campaigning to satisfy homologation requirements.
