OEM Quick Shifter — Is “activation” Required?

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I’m sure a V2 is, but the list is on their site. The only way you’d have complications is if the model year is newer than they support. When I first got mine the 2021 V4 wasn’t supported, but I still have some functionality. It wasn’t until recently when it updated I could reset the PIN code.

Super. Thank you.

I'm hoping it's just a reset needed for the QS. But, as we've seen, there could be some weird electrical stuff happening. Other than the tail light, I haven't seen anything else spliced in or out of the ordinary, but I could have missed something. But I guess I'll know for sure when I run the diagnostics. Good recommendation.

If that rear light wiring is any indication of the state of the wiring of the rest of the bike, the problem is most likely to be that.

Does anyone make a dedicated race wiring harness?

The bike is totally stripped down, and I went through the entire bike and inspected the electrical system and didn't see anything else wrong or out of the ordinary. And it isn't showing any codes. The problem could be a lot of things. Hopefully the diagnostic tool will show.

Yes, there is an after market harness, and I will likely be going to it down the road. But other than the quick shifter, which I'm optimistic will be a relatively easy fix, the bike has run fine and shown no electrical issues or errors.

Have you checked the wiring harness for continuity from plug to pins.

From the 1199 wiring diagram, it looks like the QS is connected to a lot of different things. Double check my work.

4 things that are low hanging fruit:
- Pin 21 on the ECU
- rear brake light
- E-lock + relay
- clutch switch

These are all areas that seem to have been recently manipulated in some way.

The 1199 QS was down shift only and two wires. A supply voltage to the QS and signal to the ECU. The wiring which is shared is the supply voltage. I can’t make it out in the diagram, but I’d guess +5V.

The V4, and I’m also guessing here, the V2 have three wires to the QS since it’s up and down. The supply to the V4 QS is +5V and IIRC shared by the gear sensor, kickstand switch etc.

Tail light wiring is a total mess. I'd guess this at least has something to do with the QS not working. If Superdomestique is correct, and the QS does run through the rear brake light, then this is probably my problem, as he says. I'm honestly surprised a fuse wasn't blow or there aren't any codes showing or other issues.

I spent probably eight more hours on the bike today, and the other wiring things look ok.

That said, I do appreciate both BP and Super helping on this. I think I'm going to drop it off at Ducati later next week and have them chase it down. This is about the limits of my electrical technical capabilities.

With the diagnostic tool you can see the voltage which is being received by the ECU, so you don't have to check it with a multimeter. You can try stripping a wire and taking a strand, placing it in the female side of the plug on the wire you want to check, and fold it around the plug so it extends outside of it and check it with the meter after it's plugged in.

Can you reset service lights with the OBDStar?

Should be able to. I reset my yearly service indicator, 2021 Panigale V4S.

Great, thanks.

Also, at this point, I'm about 80% certain that my quickshifter is a computer reset problem. I read on the 899 forum of people having the same issue -- initiated by a long period with a dead, or disconnected battery, which I'm certain happened to mine Once I splice on the missing connectors (ECU reader + tail light) to the tail loom wires, I'll see if I can reset with OBDStar.

Ya don’t say… it’s like I might know what I’m talking about…

Well, it turns out that you do have to "activate" the quick shifter on the V2 -- at least in some totally odd situations like whatever happened to my bike. Maybe it was because the ECU was paired with a dash that wasn't original? Maybe because it sat dead a long time? Who knows. But my initial hunch was correct -- it was indeed just a matter of getting a Ducati pro to reset / "activate" the QS with the Tex thing. I wasn't able to do it with OBDstar, though it could be possible, and I just wasn't smart enough at it yet to figure it out. Strange, but glad it's done.

Ya don’t say…

Do you have TEXA or OBDStar? Maybe try resetting it? Don’t you have to do something similar if you change the gear position sensor?

What was that reply #2? Whatever can be done on the dealer device can be done on TEXA can or OBDStar according to the shop I was just at. Customer service could’ve got you to the right place. We had to consult them and they applied a patch to the shops device on the fly to get it to work.

Glad you got it sorted.
