I have not seen an oil thread on here about grade. I have seen one about brand. Here is my question. What GRADE OIL do you use for your 1199. Manual says Shell advanced 4t 15w50. As we know in the states they you cant get that. I am more concerned with grade. 10w40, 10w50, 20w50 for vtwins etc. you can throw the brand in too if you like.

Example My stealership uses Motrex 10w50 full synthetic. its $18 a liter.
I am leaning towards castrol rs racing 4T 10w40. Its 10 bucks a quart.

What are you currently using?

I use Royal Purple 20w50 Max-Cycle (I'd use 10w40 in a colder climate). I've never had any issues. It's usually $18-20 per qt, but I can buy it in bulk at $9 a qt.

10w40 is listed as acceptable and acutally has a wider temp range than 20w50. I use amsoil.

Here's the info in the owners manual.

That's what I referenced and I might switch back to 10w40. But I think as long as it's within the temp range, we're splitting hairs. I don't usually ride below freezing and thought the 50 would be best for the hot temps I ride in a lot. It's 77F right now.

its between 3 for me not in any order
castrol rs racing 4t 10w40 10 bucks
motul 300v 15w50 16 bucks
shell rotella 6t 5w40 27 bucks a gallon

so your not going to change your oil from 600 to 7500 miles?

Does the owner's manual call for an oil change in between? I think not. Oil change intervals specified by manufacturers are generally quite conservative. With the proliferation of synthetic oils those intervals have stretched and stretched, and the oil filter's capacity to clean it is often the limiting factor.

Why spend a couple of hundred dollars unnecessarily? That's half a set of tires....almost! ;)

Has any one considered the Bel-Ray Thumper oil? I was using it in my RC51 and 1098S. If you read about it,the Thumper oil was developed for big single cylinder race bikes,ie Honda CRF 450, basically half a RC51 engine, big piston and short stroke. Exactly what the Pani is. This oil is specifically made to protect huge slipper/race type pistons that do big revs. I never had any problems with this brew and its available in various grades.

but the pani isn't a big single it's a big twin. Tho realistically I think any oil in the correct viscosity would work just fine. as long as it's mc rated for wet clutches.
