1299s Oil leak after first service at 400 miles HELP

Did my first service at 450 miles. Had the dealer do everything, rode home 70miles no seen issues. Bike sat for about three days. Then today I went out for a ride and when I came home I noticed a few drops of oil on the floor. Upon a very maticulaious inspect I found oil seeping out of an open hole on the left side of the engine case. The hole is about 1/8of an inch in diameter . See image. Not certain why oil would be coming out of this hole. Has anyone else seen this or can help Point me in the right direction. No issues prior to service of bike by dealer.. Can't believe this is happening.. Please help if you know what's up.

I feel for you, stuff happens.
As long as you have a good dealership they will take good care of you.
Just hope you don't have to rely on DNA, they truly suck.

Strange - overfill weep hole (?) Where's the oil level at on the sight glass?

Some dealers are better than others, but they are always in somewhat of a hurry and I prefer to do this stuff myself so I'm 100% sure it's done right - I also prefer to drain the oil hot (immediately following a ride) and let it drain at least an hour

Where are you at in California? I'm asking because the good thing is there are a lot of dealers in the state.

Ok so I had my first service at 450 miles. Had the dealer do everything, rode home 70miles no seen issues. Bike sat for about three days. Then today I went out and did the most spirited ride I have done so far on her. I was trying to see what see had. Anyway when I came home I noticed a few drops of oil on the floor. Had the same thing happen to my 1199, twice. They replaced my engine, under warranty, both times so I was riding on my 3rd engine. I wrote and called Ducati about the issue about how unsafe this is. Still a Pani lover though.

Did you post a thread on this? Not to bring up bad news but if it is the same issue, it might help him however I dont want to jump to conclusions.

Im glad you still love your bike, I cant stay I would still want it after a 3rd engine replacement.

Apeluv,

Hey could you possibly point me toward the thread about your 1199 engine replacement. Why would oil be leaving out from that hole? If you know any other posts about the issue please let me know. Thanks in advance.. I'm so gutted can't believe this is happening to a 25k bike.

Looks like some sort of weep hole. Is there a bearing or a seal for something in there somewhere? Most people don't know that bearings or seals have to weep a little to stay sealed. Otherwise friction can kill them.

Also keep in mind that seals in bearings or mains can take time to swell up all the way. Look at GM 5.7, 8.1, and 8.8L crate engines. Leak oil badly from rear mains and sometimes front main when new. I get warranty calls to replace those all the time. A little brake clean and a rag, problem solved. LOLz. Easy money.

I wouldn't sweat one drop of oil, yet. Clean it up and go.

I have been on the hunt for answers. I think this is the weep hole for the water pump. The concerning part is that oil is coming out of this oil with a little water/coolant.
I presume maybe a seal problem or like the last post say about seal setting since it's new.

Wow - this is why I don't trust most shops. You have to do your own research because fraud is so common and owners of these high priced toys are paranoid

Like someone previously said, check your oil level.
I'll bet it has been over filled. Common error.

Could it be just residual oil (spilled) from inputting the new oil? I know, I'm reaching way out there now.

I could've sworn I posted it but I guess I didn't. Anywho, they said the same thing about some small hole in the engine where the oil was coming from and that they had to get a new engine from ducati. Which irritated me because I had to re-break in the new engine, but they paid for that 600 mile service. (twice).
Also the odometer did not change. So, even though the odometer said 1800 miles the engine only had 600 on it.
I complained to Ducati about this about how unsafe it is for oil to keep leaking on the exhaust area and that it would be difficult to sell the bike because the engine actually has less miles than what the odometer has. After 3-4 phone calls and 2-3 emails; they ended up giving me a Termi Slip-on for free.

Can anyone send me an engine schematic or drawing. Maybe even the 1199 one might be just what I'm looking for.

Thanks

That weep hole is in fact the weep hole for the water pump - the only thing that would leak from this is coolant (if the coolant system is over filled or your water pump is not operating properly) - if it is a mix of oil and coolant, it can only mean a head gasket (or other appropriate seal) has gone bad - open the cap on the radiator and look inside, or dip your pinky in the top...if you have oil and coolant there see your dealer right away for repair

I have had coolant leak from the thermostat housing, located directly above that weep hole....but not oil anywhere in the area at all

Unfortunate, but get it to a reputable dealer ASAP and let them handle it. The bike is under warranty, it's inconvenient, but it will get dealt with.

I figured something like that, but was praying for a miracle kinda maybe like a simple shaft seal or something simple to do.. It is just so unfortunate on a brand new 1299s. I'm gutted.. Hate to think that the motor may need to come apart with only 500 miles on it. This totally devalues the machine if that's what is needed.

You didn't overheat the bike at all, right? It seems to run hotter during initial break in

The bike even at traffic light never went pass 215-218 F. Then I had the first service done at 450 miles. At 500 it started leaking from that weep hole.

In my case, the customer is too dumb to read the work order report that says what I did. And "within normal limits". The manufacturer gets a small warranty bill to clean up the minor mess. So no fraud.

But I have witnessed lesser companies rip down the engine based on the customers requests, it didn't end well. New engine leaked just as much.

OP: If there is no oil in the coolant, than it's likely just a drip left over from the oil change. The water pumps weep hole also has to weep a small amount of coolant every once in a while. Keep an eye on it, if it gets waaaay worse, it's a water pump.
