Oil leak *possible new info*

My 2012 is in the shop for a oil and coolant leak. The initial findings were that the bike was leaking oil and coolant from a coolant weep hole on the forward head.

DNA sent a rep to look at the bike last week and decided to try and repair the leak.

After a 3 full days of pulling the engine, tearing it down, and replacing several gaskets and seals; the bike still leaks. I am now waiting on a new engine with 1187 miles on the original engine.

According to DNA, this is a known issue. Supposedly some early engines had mis-drilled oil galleys which causes this to happen.

I just figured it would be good info for the those who have leaks to know.

Hmm... the leak issue must not be limited to the 899; it typically happens soon after the 600 mile service.

That's about when mine happened but I just kept topping off oil and coolant because I wanted to ride.

Damm, you couldn't have ridden it around for 12 more miles before the teardown"¦.I have a weird numbers thing.

(although you are 12 shy and its a 2012, so its ok then)

Haha I thought about trying to time it to drop it off at the shop on exactly 2012 miles but I didn't have time before my appointment at the dealer.

Damn I wish I would have done that.

I just took my bike in for the same thing. 2012 with my first oil leak at 8750. miles on it.

That's what your bike was doing at Westlake Ducati yesterday, Scrapper X. And I must say that it's a sight to behold in person. Great ....... job, man. Absolutely stunning.

Thanks AntiHero, Will is an amazing Master Ducati Mech at Westlake. I used to take my bike to Sam at Ducati Santa Barbara who really understood race bikes but I heard he moved to the SF bay area. Will understands race bikes too and have you seen the race bike he built? Pretty sweet. Next month we plan on ripping my engine apart again for some more serious engine mods.

I recently went through this in my 1012 it is a know issue. I am curious as to what level of warranty you get with the new engine.
and not to discourage you, but I already have a new oil leak...

I have already expressed to my service advisor that I expect the engine to be covered for 2 years. He didn't think it would be an issue but I'm not holding my breath.

Just got a call from the dealer. DNA is saying they have a procedure to fix this and I should have my bike back on Mon/Tues. Not holding my breath that it's fixed.

As I understand it, DNA has been replacing the 899 engines altogether then provide an additional 2 year warranty on the engine and comp the first 600 mile service since you have to do another break in.

Thats very funny I was thinking the exact same thing! I too have a weird OCD/ADD/ADHD whatever you want to call it type thing in my head with numbers. I thank god its not as bad as it used to be- I used to run patterns in my head- crazy s***. Now my brain just thinks 1199 everything. :D

Back to regularly scheduled programming...

This thread reminds me- after 6,000 miles of riding I should probably check my coolant :eek: oh good lord this maintenance will be the death of me.

Wow, I must have been lucky, 6k on my 899 so far and no issues. A friend's 2012 1199S never had any leaks that I heard of, either.

I think it's just a case of "built on a Friday afternoon". Some bikes have tons of issues, other has none.
