What have others experience with oil usage and when they need to add.

I picked up my bike from the Dealer with 8 miles on it. I have seen a lot about smoking but my bike has had none. My only worry at first was the first 10 miles was in stop and go traffic. After that the remaining 90 miles home was though the foot hills. I did get it up to about 7500 getting onto the freeway but otherwise have kept it mostly below 6K. I live in the foot hills so the bike almost never sees the straight and level constant speed. Second and third gears gets most of the work.

Now after about 450 miles I still show my oil full and cant see that I have used any to speak of?

This is unusual.....most bikes seem to take around 3500 to break in and stop using oil...Mine did...

by first service 600 miles i needed oil as it was very low. i have to add about 1/4 quart every say 500-1000 miles. i have 5500 miles on my bike for what its worth. everyone is different though and it also depends HOW you ride not just how long you ride for.

Mine hasn't used any that I can tell (except for the oil that has leaked out of the valve covers). :)

4500 miles or so..

The only oil I have lost is from the valve cover gasket has a slight leak.No smoke at all and have never added any oil.bike has 22.000ks on.Valve covers did not leak till around 16.000ks.

I seem to have to take oil OUT after major services--at least 2-3 dealers added up to an extra f'in quart.

In my experience, the Ducati doesn't burn very much oil at all.

Dennis... How many miles now???

I ignored the recommended break in procedure on my bike routinely turned in past 8000, it stopped smoking almost right away, and I never had to add oil, did the oil change at 600 miles, been riding a bit have about 1100 on it now,oil level is still fine. I think the easy does it break in doesn't let them seal up.

Both of mine have done the exact same thing.

Initially the smoked a lot during break in, and gradually both of them got better.

My "R" just reached 2000 miles, and it still smokes a bit at idle. After 5 minutes or so I'm good to go.

I add 4-5 ounces every 500 miles or so. That number is slowly going down.

So what's your problem:confused:

If you want it to use some oil, start ragging on the bike in first and or second gear taking it to the rev limiter.
I'm confident it will use some then;)

Excellent:)

I'll be willing to bet they're putting in about 3.7 litres of oil as a service refill capacity, which is totally in accordance with the manual.
I think the manual is wrong.
Maybe the engine holds 3.7 litres of oil from a factory dry fill.

I maintain that 3.5 litres is close to the mark for a service refill capacity after purging the scavenging pump and a filter change.

Brad, I spoke to my mechanic, he said it doesn't sound excessive. Might take upwards of 6000 or more to break in. Ducati won't do anything unless it's more than a quart per 1000 miles. We shall see, it's my first duc..

That all sounds quite correct:)
You appear to be in good hands with your mechanic, and he's not full of ......

It's just that 180 ml per 1600 km is on track to being slightly excessive.
Unless it's trending down of course;)

Try to be more accurate with your top ups, by putting in a fixed/measured amount to bring it up to the top line. (Only after it gets to the bottom line).
And record the distance travelled.

It "may" be in your best interests;)

Are you giving it the berries wherever you can?

I have been bring it to redline when I can, I have to wait till spring is here, way to much salt on the roads now, and it's 5 degrees f now.. I will try to measure more accurately next time...
