Hey Gunny, what weight is that oil??? Is it 10w40, 15w50, or 20w50??? I can't tell. You're a funny guy Gunny. :p :D

Any correct grade and spec oil better than no or low oil or too much oil. With that said, I have dealer recommended Redline at the moment.

Where's the choice "my dealer never put Shell in my 1199"?

They put Mobile 15w50 race synthetic in mine. I'll probably stick with it, since it's easy to find everywhere.

you get that in the states? motorcycle oil? you sure about that?

also castrol racing 4t 10w 50 or any viscosity you want is on sale for 7.69 a qt on amazon. motul is the best oil around but its not 10 bucks a qt better than castrol at that price. and its not better than amsoil for 12 bucks a qt.

3.7 liters, or until full! I use Rotel 5W40.

Sorry mate, it'll work out to be too much.
I know the manual states 3.7 litres.
But it's wrong.

She won't take 3.7 litres. Even if one purges all the contents out of the scavenging pump, with filter change(naturally) and left to drain for a long time from a hot engine.

If you put 3.7 litres into it, it will in fact be "quite a good deal over full" when one checks it when the bike is cold and level.
This will strongly motivate one to remove some oil(fact). Or one will be on the forums complaining of putting exactly 3.7 litres in and it's over full. The next question will inevitably be "what's the easiest way to remove the excess oil".
And it's not easy or convenient and it's a bit messy.
3.7 litres of oil will end up putting the level at (some where ?) over the top of the sight glass, when checked dead cold and with bike level after a run to get the oil nice and hot.

My hot tip for a service refill capacity on the 1199, is to only put (3.5 litres) in as a starting point.
Then recheck it after a run to get the oil hot and the bike has completely cooled down(nearly or completely cold and with bike level).
If one chooses (not) to purge the scavenging pump then about 3.45 litres will be suitable as a starting point for the service refill capacity (I think the pump holds about 70 ml).

So in summary, It's better to be close to having to add a little oil, than to be quite over full from the start.
I have repeatedly found on the 1199, that using 3.5 litres as a service refill capacity will get one to within about 50 - 70 ml off the top mark on the crankcase, with purging the scavenging pump and filter change.

Then later on, one may add a little oil as required to suit when cold and level.

Good Luck;)

I had to use Motul couldn't find the Shell, clutch felt better and my bike shifted better with the Shell

A good buddy of mine who use to race swears by Mobile 1 15w-50 car full synthetic race oil (something about no additives to mess up trans etc etc). When I go online I see a HUGE amount of sportbikers swear by it. Anyone else use/hear the same thing?

Just don't use Mobil1 for car in your bike.
Or vice versa.
Car oil is different from bike oil, even when the names are the same.

IMO if the engine can genuinely benefit from it, then it's perfectly fine to use motorcycle oil in a car engine.

I would have to be desperate to put car oil in a motorcycle, and then I would be dropping it out at the first opportunity and definitely not leaving it in the bike any longer than 3000 kms.

I was incorrect with my earlier comments. My dealer does not have the Shell. They use Spectro Platinum 4 15w-50 full synthetic. Not cheap but very highly rated.

So much misinformation about oil. Highly recommend you read bobistheoilguy.com and the forum.

I'm tempted to use Mobil 1 15w-50 vtwin full synthetic after a lot of reading only because it is cheaper than the Spectro.

I used to use Mobil 15w-50 in all my M/C. But harder to find these days at Autozone.

I've switched over to full synthetic Castrol SynTec 20w-50 RS 4T. Specific for m/c and readily available.
