Pistons and Rings after 27,500 miles

FJR or Goldwing? NEVER!!!!! Already did the circumference of the world on only one bike. I do have to admit I am seriously thinking it might be wise for me to start over on a zero mile bike, though....

ok, ok, ok, I get it. How about a Super Tenere or a Vstrom?

Ok, this warrants a serious discussion. First of all, I plan on getting laid, so a Vstrom is out of the question. A Super Tenere wouldn't interfere with that, but it wouldn't help. It would allow me the flexibility to ride around Mongolia, but what about the Alps? What about the Nurburgring? Imola? Oh yeah, I can just see myself flying off a cliff with that pig of a bike somewhere in Switzerland because I tried to exceed the speed limit by 8km/hr around a turn and ran out of tire.

It's a long way around the world, so the only choice is to choose a bike that makes me want to get on it and ride.

Oh and speaking of pigs: "You can't teach pigs to sing - it only frustrates you and annoys the pig." ;)

An SL, now....that is making more sense every day. :D

Hold on on your bike!
Mongolia? Did not know you plan to go that East!
Careful with timing of attacking Russia. Many started late summer, with very bad consequences, weather wise :D

Round the world, yo! I'll stay in Europe as long as I can, but due to the delay (if y'all recall I was supposed to be gone in early May), I won't have enough time to cover all I want to cover in Europe. So the plan will be--get my ass there, ride north while the weather is good, then hunker down in, oh, I dunno, Spain, Portugal, Southern Italy, Greece or ??? for the Winter, then cruise the Trans Siberian highway, then Japan, then back to the US. Will definitely take an excursion to Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, but getting a 1200cc bike through those countries is a pain in the arse.

lol...good show mate. Hey, if you are convinced of doing the equivalent of running the Dakar on a Vespa I can't stop you. I do rather like the khaki color in the new V-strom 1000 though. I bet you could find some harlot who would bed you if you rode into town on that. You could just explain to her how great the fuel economy is and how you have been around the world with no leaks, all your turn signals working, no bolts falling out, no melting fairings, no foggy dashes, no smoking, no stalling, no hot weather starting failures and your air box, pistons and rings are clean as a whistle. If nothing else she'll admire you for your sensibility! :)

Did you just mention "winter" and "trans-siberian HW" in the same sentence? :D
Forget the Ducati then. To cross those countries you need something else ...

Anti,

Seems as though you have plans; do you have plans after your return or not thinking that far in advance?

Either way, have a great trip. I will be following your progress from the confines of my life.

I was extremely happy with the reliability of the bike on my original trip and so long as there are roads, the Panigale is every bit as capable as anything else. Takes a bit more conditioning to do the miles on a superbike is all.

With that said, still have this wonky idle issue....so it's looking like I'll have to start over again with a new Supermodel.

HotIce: I'll hunker down in warmer climates during winter and THEN (after winter is over) head East. I'm not doing Siberia on any bike in the winter.

The high idle issue has come back. Pistons and rings weren't the cause. I'm going to need a new bike, as I can't wait around for the next 'fix'. I've already lost 4-6 weeks and am not working anymore, so I can't afford to just hang out in Diamond Bar, CA forever.

So here's the extend of my 'plans': get functioning bike. Get it to Europe. (No idea what country at this point.) Once I land I'll pick up my bike, then ride, then find a place to sleep for the night.

In July: make it to World Ducati Week.

Ride around Europe until the weather boxes me in. Then lay low for the winter and head east when the weather looks good.

That's it. When the future is ambiguous anything can happen. :)

Fsck, sorry to hear that.
What are your plans to get a new bike?

BTW: Will meet at WDW, unless I go in Croatia for that weekend.

Time for a PR tour with all the manufacturers to see who's willing to replace Ducati if they don't support Version 2.0 one of their biggest end-user success stories ever. Due to your predilection for mega-touring with supersport bikes, maybe:

  • MV could pony up an F3 800 Ago/F4RR
  • Aprilia would provide a RSV4 Factory
  • Buell needs the PR for their 1190RX

No jap bikes invited, of course.

"Biggest end user success story?" Thanks! :) My mind is still set on one bike.

Here's a video of the coughing at idle that's started happening again:

If any of y'all see a good deal on an R or an S--or if anyone wants to make an offer on my bike--let me know. I do have an extended warranty, but just can't wait around for the next 'maybe this will work' fix.

Fighting back Turrets at this point.

There is an R a member has listed here for a friend of his for $23,500 with 2400 miles. I'd say that's a pretty good price with some additional DP parts on it but it is in Connecticut.

Cool! Thanks--didn't see this earlier today. Sent him an email.

Randall: No way. I'd do the trip on a Multi over any other big, laborious monster, but I rode one and I wasn't too fond. A Hyper would be more my thing if I was going to go in that direction. The Multi is just too ......' grown up for me.

No problem man. Hope it works out for ya n you walk away with a great deal.

I'd hate to see you sell your bike but seeing how you might be pressed for cash in the near future, I'd understand. That bike just needs to be retired and roped off in the living room with a side placard stating tge history behind the bike like you see at shows.
