Plastic pieces found in oil

The standard 1299 and 1299S has the steel oil pump gears. I'm going for the full RS oil strainer gauze for my next endurance bikes, and if anyone has run the Scott oil filters, I'd like to hear from you. I think I'm going to go to a dry clutch set-up, too. It appears contamination in the oil from clutch debris and a pressure relief valve calibrated too low allowing micro particles to enter the main oil gallery may have been most of the problem.

Blue Guy, I've been running the Scotts stainless filter on my 899 for 14,000 miles. I've only been on track once, however. Bike is mainly run in the twisties and on the highway hard (2nd gear to top of 6th repeatedly).

I've had no issues with it, the debris I see on the magnetic drain plug is the same (if not a little less) as with the Ducati oil filter. I just pull it, drain it, wash it with dish soap and water, then dunk it in a jar of kerosene and shake it around... then shake it dry and blow it with an air nozzle inside-out, air dry for a bit, then reinstall with 20W-50 Amsoil. Bike runs great for having 67,000 miles and burns no oil whatsoever :)

Hope that helps!

Damn girl! You've got 67,000 miles on that thing. That's awesome! Keep rollin on.

you got zero problem

check that the particles are thermo softening or hardening

they are flat and so not part of bearing shields or bearing cages

the prefilter screen on the oil pump is , designed to stop hard particles going through the oil pump and damaging it? so it is impossible for the these particles to ever block anything up, (because they cant get through the oil filter) and to do so would have to get through the oilfilter (5-10 micron nominal guess?) if the plastic can get through that its like a fine paste, and plastic has never damaged any metal engine component that I can remember
Iif they melt with the application of heat they are not part of the engine

Plastic is close to floating in oil and will get transported by oil-flow?
but they never been damaged, didnt get chewed up?

Are these items oil and heat stained?
if they clean readily haven been in engine long

Personally I would think they were introduced during an oil change or were present in the drain tray prior to draining you oil

I think you got nothing to worry about, let alone cause you to mistrust your bike

Just completed 24000km desmo service on 1299. Mechanic found two of those plastic tabs and a thin slither of metal that is about the same size as the tab. Very thin and spring loaded piece of metal.
He said the plastic tabs are from bearing cages.... That does not sound good for longevity.

Hello 1657622934494.pnggentlemen, I have the same problem. I found three pieces in the oil, what is it? I heard it came from the baring but I don't know which one ??

No one is going to be able to offer anything beyond an educated guess at best. There's really only two options.

Ride it and enjoy it.

Strip the engine down and inspect everything.

and if any of you continue to drive and nothing happens with the engine after removing these pieces ???

Nearly 28k miles and probably drained 20 of those pieces out between all the oil changes. Still runs great.

Hey Guys,

I know I am bumping an old thread - but I experienced this same issue and I wanted to give my story on this because I think it will help to anybody who finds this.
See attached for what was in my oil (1299S - 7K Miles) - exclusively a track bike after 2K Miles.

This issue led me to this thread - and shared it with the tech. He reached out to the area manager and got this statement back.

"We have seen those several times before, and there’s nothing to be alarmed about. They are leftover pieces from the manufacturing of the engine cases. Typically they will end up in the bottom of the cases and work their way into the pan and depending on how many miles the bike has or how many oil changes it has had you’ll find a few of them in there and that particular model of the 1199 or 1299. "

Hope this helps anyone who sees the issue - and comes to this thread to find out what is going on - I wasnt 100% convinced that it was a non-issue until this was confirmed

ive had those pieces in my oil changes too ,, definitely got worried until i read up on it. But for piece of mind i checked the oil mesh filter in the sump and was clear and removed the right hand cover to check the gears

I also found pieces in my oil but mine look diffrent from thoose i have seen here. 10 pieces did i find.
Some say noting to worry about but it doesn´t feel ok.

To answer the original OP's question, the plastic pieces are from one of the two oil pump sprockets. My 2013 1199R has just had them replaced, tech said they usually need replacing around 20K kms

I thought this had been discussed and came to the conclusion that they are not from the gears but from the manufacturing process of a particular part but not 100% where. I had the exact same tabs took my cover off to check gears and they were fine.
