Racing is two fold, they learn things in trying to build a winning car that helps them build a better car to sell, and the exposure of their name. Winning helps, but getting the name out there is what matters. When asked about my bike, I have always bragged of its atrributes, I never discuss how many races Ducati has been in or won. The people it matters to me that know tha fact, already know it, i.e. most of you :)

Yeah NASCAR does all that but seriously it's one of, if not the most boring racing formats in the world. How Americans buy in to it I have no idea!

Oh & it's 4am in the morning here, can't sleep & been down the the garage to double check all my bolts are tight. WTF!

Reminds me of when I was in Budapest, Hungary in 1992 & they served beer at McDonalds.I was like confused. Get drunk & then eat junk food or eat junk food then get drunk!

I know, after all this talk I said to myself, "After a year of owning it, I'm finally going to check them now!", then the other self, that actually rules, said "Nah".
 
Just to get this thread back on the already hijacked topic of race wins equating to sales and why it matters to us...

First off I agree with the other posters about half the reason the manufactures race at all is to sell bikes. (how Honda making Indy or F1 engines helps sell civics and accords I have no clue though... and no that technology does not trickle down) But it does matter to me if they win Frosty, I think it matters to the hordes of Ducatista that wear their Ducati shirts and wave their Ducati flags on the "Ducati island" portion of the stands at races. Ducati (and other teams) want owners to feel like they are part of the Ducati family and part of the team (heck, our money does help fund them...). If you go to a race, it's just kinda cool to see the sea of red in the crowd representing the Ducati fans, simliar to the huge sea of red that Ferrari draws to F1 races.

And no, we don't ride the exact same bike as the WSBK team, but I personally still want believe the bike I bought is made by the best engineers (ahem, relating to the OP subject of bolts falling off... see, I'm back on thread topic now) and a company that knows how to make the "best" race bikes. I'm not going to lie, there a sense of pride wearing a Ducati tshirt when they win, and Ducati wants you to feel that way... It's no different than wearing your sports team's jersey when they play.

And it's more difficult to defend why you bought a Ducati to your Aprilia or Kawasaki friends when it's losing races, has bolts falling off, tft screens needing replacement, etc and all you've got to defend back is "but it's the prettiest!" and then try to argue to them that emotional experience of riding it is better and their bikes are boring and wouldn't understand... ;)

Lol..Yep.. I sense that already...But then again I have been burned on every bike pretty much..Except my Diavel...Got a great trade on that..To buy the 1199...:rolleyes:
 
Come on guys, nobody bought a Pani because of the value proposition, resale/trade in value or dependability/low maintenance. If those factors were high on your purchasing criteria then you screwed the pooch big time buying this bike. We buy it because it moves us and deal with the warts because the ownership experience is somehow worth it in the end. If it isn't and the other factors outweigh the experience then get something else that doesn't have the same warts and move on :)

Thread hijack again... How'd you like the Diavel? I was considering one for longer rides to be more comfortable. Miss it at all?

I do not...the fueling on it was horrible..Suspension is really hard as to be uncomfortable...I had to have my dash replaced.. Handling was meh... As much as I get frustrated with the 1199 it is leaps and bounds a better bike than the Diavel..Imho..

Some people care and some people don't, simple as that. Some people like golf, some people think it's boring as hell, some people think collecting stamps is a better hobby than motorcycling... I'm not going to argue with them to convince them it's better. Most people that buy a corvette probably don't care how it does in Le Mans, but Chevy is still going to race it for the many that do to market the car to them, and the corvette vs viper people will use the race results of that car that is totally different from theirs to argue which is better (similar to the Aprilia Ducati arguement, but our bikes do have a lot more in common with the race bikes than the cars). To each their own... Just try and understand that it does matter to a LOT of people... or the OEM's wouldn't even bother racing. It's totally fine if some people couldn't care less.

I am one of the guys that doesn't "get" the Diavel. The blue and white one I saw recently was kind of cool with the white wheels, but when I look at the whole lineup it is the last Ducati I would consider buying. For me it breaks down like this:

Commuter/knock around bike - SF, Monster or Hyper
Long range/touring - Multi
Fun/track - Pani, 848 (or the others above)
Cruiser? - Diavel?

Wait, I don't really go "cruising" as such.. For long rides I'd get a multi, hyperstrada or one of the big BMW sport touring bikes I think.

After a 4500 mile 8 day trip on my Hayabusa I wanted out of Sport Bikes but didn't want to loose the performance aspect by going the cruiser route.. Diavel looked like a perfect compromise.. "Comfortable Sport Bike"... It wasn't either...:(

Isn't the Multi or one of the big BMWs kind of like a "comfy sport bike"? My SF 1098 is pretty comfy and can hang with most sport bikes. I wouldn't put it up against a sport touring bike for long range comfort though, but it is loads more comfy than the Pani.
