I'm considering buying an 1199 S from a private seller who lives on the East Coast and want to get it shipped to CA and just had a couple questions. Any insights or suggestions are welcome.

1. Any recommendations on companies that ship motorcycles cross country that has a good reputation and competitive rates? I've heard of Bevel Heaven Products - Motorcycle Shipping - USA - No Crates, No Hassles, Insured, Door to Door (925) 586-6420 and Motorcycle Shipping, Motorcycle Transport | (800) 730-3151. Anyone have any personal experience with either?

2. I assume bank transfer or cashiers checks are the way to go. How do I make sure the bike gets delivered once I send the funds?

3. Since I wouldn't be able to see the bike in person I would like to pay a local Ducati dealership to look the bike over and give it their stamp of approval. Is this a good idea or a waste of money?

4. Any location specific things to think about? i.e. salty winter roads in the east coast damaging exterior etc..

5. I know state tax rates and laws are different so I'll have to do my own research on that.

Any other things I should consider?

If its a white one from new york, PASS

#3 waist of money.

Want the the low down put a link up to the bike. Someone here may now the history.

#5 you will pay tax here on a out of state delivery when you register it here. If they have state tax where you buy then that will be applied to what ever else Ca can tax you for if the rate is different.

Doesn't CA have a minimum miles for used out of state vehicles before you can import into CA? Or is that a thing of the past?

I would buy local or have someone go check out the bike for you.

I would be very hesitant to send money to anyone I didn't know. What happens if they don't ship the bike, or it's not there when your shipping company goes to get it?
Way too many risks.

Ebay purchase with PayPal is more secure to buy and ship as you have recourse if you don't get the item as described.

CA has a min. miles for out of state 49-state vehicles. The Panigale is a 50 state bike.

Do yourself a favor and contact a local dealer and have them do the transfer and all the necessary paperwork for you. They'll want a cut, of course, but consider it insurance. Now if the guy is totally legit and has given you his work, home, cell phone, address, and you can verify that he's, say, the VP of Marketing at Cisco on LinkedIn, you're probably going to be ok, but still involve a third party--at least someone who can verify that the bike isn't scratched up or missing its front rotors....

With it being winter and there being so many bikes available, I can't imagine why anyone would want to go through all the trouble and risk. Shipping alone is going to make even a good deal not so great.

If you bring a bike into Ca you have to have the bike inspected at a CHP office So make sure all emission stickers are in place and of course all normal street legal stuff too. Then it needs to be inspected at DMV.

BTW, Pro Italia has a nice used '13 1199S red with a full Termi coming in this week if interested.

Hmm sounds like a hassle. And thanks for the heads up! Ill keep my eyes on the Pro Italia website.

CA treats a vehicle with less than 7500 miles as new. As such, it must meet CA emission requirements to register. You'll be fine with the 1199 BUT be sure the emissions sticker is there and it says something to the effect of meeting both EPA and CA requirements. Can't see having CHP involved unless there is a problem reading the VIN. I brought two cars and a motorcycle into the state with no chippie involvement.

If you aren't a AAA member, might be a good time to sign up. They will do all your registration work for you allowing you to skip the DMV trip. But they only take cash/check payable to DMV (tax man want's his $$).

Side note...looking to sell my Tri and I'm in San Diego ;).

Your bank should have a letter of intent which you can get the seller to have notorized and mailed to you.. and a copy of the title.

Then you can schedule terminal to terminal shipping. Ive gone through STI delivers. they pallet the bike and much cheaper

Dont expect paypal to protect you when doing transfer for a motorcycle or vehicle. there fine print clearly states they do not provide protection of any kind for vehicles unless through ebay protection.
