Race Seat vs. Comfort Seat Comparison

Round the World on an 1199
A race seat was my first choice when I picked my bike up, but a comfort seat was all the dealer had in stock at the time, so comfort seat I got. It works for long - and short - rides, but the material is just too slippery for the track. After being glued onto the R seat I figured I'd give the Race Seat a try and picked one up right here in the classifieds (Thanks, Tom!).

I was surprised to discover that the race seat is nearly identical to the Comfort seat. So for anyone considering which one to get, here's my take:

1) Race seat is much harder, which may initially feel uncomfortable, but contrary to common sense, harder sometimes can be less fatiguing over a long enough duration. I haven't done any massive miles on it yet, but it's plenty comfortable.

2) Race seat is less 'elegant' looking than the Comfort, with no red stitching and one solid piece of material instead of the dual-texture Comfort.

3) Race seat is the same shape (I was expecting it to be lower). Looks can be deceiving, though--the material on the Race Seat makes it look like it's slightly a different shape towards the middle/back, but that's just the material being stretched. Put your finger on it and the profile is the same as the Comfort. I molded foil around one and dropped it onto the other and it was a perfect match save for a slightly longer comfort seat length (1/2", maybe).

4) Grip. The Race seat is way grippier than the Comfort seat. So much so I may not install my stomp grips before my next track day.

(After 17k miles, dust, dirt, rain and wind the C seat still looks new!)

Both are clearly quite a bit higher than the stock (or the 1199R) seat. So for those who are already on their tip toes, either one will push you up way too high. For those with longer legs, the Race seat will probably put you up another quarter or so inch because it wont' sag down as much as the Comfort (meaning it should keep your legs from being less cramped).

If the race seat was half as thick or the stock seat had the same fabric it would be perfect for me.

Thanks Antihero for the comparison. This is what I was looking for before I purchased my comfort seat. When I got my seat the dealer only had the comfort seat in stock so I went that way. I find I am sliding forward on the comfort seat when slowing and am installing the techspec tank grips.
I may go with the race seat, we'll see how it goes
Cheers

Comfort seat is what they should have put on them to begin with. It's a little annoying to think that Ducati engineers/management had a meeting and in the middle of their brain-storming session one of 'em speaks up and says "Hey, I know how we can increase profit margins. You know that seat we're going to put on them? Let's just mount a 2x4" instead so they'll have to come back to the dealer and spend another $200 for the seat we were going to give 'em for free....."
Worked. Took all of the first 30 miles on mine before I showed back up at the dealer telling them they forgot to put the seat on and they really need to do something about that. My butt was hurting so much I totally didn't notice when they mumbled something about not covered by warranty so they would have to charge me another $200 or some silliness like that...

I think you guys have it all wrong. The race seat isn't the greatest travesty in what they delivered. . . It's the superslick waxed foot pegs. . ..

Wouldn't the comfort seat be better on the track because it'll be easier to slide around in?

Yup, they discussed the foot pegs at that same meeting!

I actually said something to this effect at the dealer this past Saturday. "It's amazing, you spend 30 grand on a bike that ships with a bunch of crap you have to replace immediately so they can make even more money off of you." ...response, "Oh .... he's on to us!"

Exactly what I'd ask. When I was racing I did a lot of moving around on the bike. I don't see how a high friction seat would be a help. Though to be fair, moving around meant lifting myself off the seat and shifting weight from side to side/front to back.
Stock seat seems more forward biased. The comfort seat, being thicker - especially in the front - seems to have less forward bias so not as likely to continually be causing you to slide forward.

Thanks Dennis. I am utterly amazed that the comfort and race seats are the same height. I always thought the race was shorter material. I don't think there has ever been a two inch pad on any set of race plastics. Thanks for the comparo.

AH, great review.... Did the C seat ever get soaked on your trip?

The outer surface would, but to my surprise the inner foam remained absolutely, completely dry.

Nope. If your body can't grip the bike you end up holding yourself in place using your arms....which means you're supporting yourself using the same device (clip ons) that turn the bike. After a few sessions you feel like you've done 1000 pull ups, your arms get weak and your steering inputs are affected by all the g forces. You definitely want something with sand-paper like grip. Comfort seat doesn't have it. Stock seat doesn't have it. The R seat does, and so does the Race seat.

I have the race seat and am curious if anyone has taken any of the 'cushion' out of it to reduce ride height? I sat on a friends with the stock seat and felt I was much more 'in the bike' vs. riding 'on the bike.' Either way much better than stock......Cheers!

i got a customize seat cover from HTmoto, you can choose from an assortment of fabric, and they will make it on order. The quality and fitting is great. You can have it grip like rubber, or smoonth like silk, and different materials on side vs center. all for $65, highly recommended. Add cushion inserts, gel, all you want.

Only one I see on HTmoto's site is a $280 Stunt seat for the Panigale. Did you send them your seat?

I agree with the others....I like the stock seat for the position. Same with the R seat. The latter is great for the track because you're very rarely sitting on it. But on the street it's an ... hammer. Around 1" taken out of the comfort or the race would be ideal for both street and track. Now that I've got an extra seat I might look into something custom.

about to redo my seat tomorrow... will be experimenting with foams and gels... will post pics

does anyone have the actual height of the race and comfort seat? i could really use them as i recreate a seat tomorrow.

Thanks for the comparison. It was in the back of my mind what the differences if any between race and comfort seat. I really hate buyer's remorse so I feel better about which seat I got now. Still wish comfort came stock on the bike :)

Not sure where you want to measure from, but I just measured the comfort seat from the bottom sharp angle to the top and it'd 3.5" Race seat is the same.
