If there is a low fuel warning light then the sensors already exist, my BMW S1000RR had a low fuel light and a distance to empty came up at the same time

Wow.. apologies to the op. Didn't mean to hijack your thread, was just throwing a question your way because unlike most here, you actually own one.
Would still be nice for you to chime in tho.

Dude, I answered your post immediately after you asked the question.

Whether we have one or not is irrelevant.
We can read a brochure.

Dude.. I wanted to know EXACTLY what it does from an ACTUAL owner.
If I wanted info out of a brochure I would have started a new thread.:confused::confused: It's not uncommon for products to be delivered slightly different to what's in a brochure.

lmfao.

Regarding the fuel gauge there isn't one, the amber warning light comes on with 5 litres left in the tank also the trip meter comes to the fore and starts counting the km until you refill
I am used to having a fuel range on my BM but on the Ducati I am not bothered with 5ltrs left in the tank I have every opportunity to get to a petrol station
but then I live in the middle of Europe and a petrol station is never too far

Thanks.. was beginning to think I needed to brush up on my primary school maths. :D

Not a gauge. No.
But a light will come on when you have about 5? litres left.

"Regarding the fuel gauge there isn't one, the amber warning light comes on with 5 litres left in the tank also the trip meter comes to the fore and starts counting the km until you refill"

This is the bit that I don't see in brochures ;)
Unless your maths is extremely good AND you're psychic enough to know your instantaneous consumption. 5L could mean 100kms or it could mean 10kms.;);)

John,

I'm not trying to turn this into a fight. Although I am being a smart arse.
I'm baffled by why you won't listen to someone after asking a question.

Note 1: The fuel reserve appears to be 3L (Tank is 17L).

leebeeone: Can you confirm the 5L that you mentioned? 5 does seem a lot of reserve for a 17L tank.

Note 2: If you search the internet for 'petrol fuel reserve 1199' (or similar), you will find reference to 'trip reserve' - as I did, when I did some research.

Now. What leebeeone wrote, is not what you think it means.
The fuel system, sadly has not changed for at LEAST 5 years.

To clarify how it works for you John, and how you have understandably misinterpreted what leebeeone has said by "starts counting the km until you refill" ...

It means, starts counting UP until you refill.
Not, down until you NEED to refill.

It doesn't tell you how much fuel you have left, or how far you can travel.
It tells you how many kilometres/miles you have done since the light came on.
That is all. It is NOT a smart system.

Which, is the basis for me taking this 'off topic' into why they don't have a 'range' or 'distance til empty' display.

To take this further and illustrate the flawed behaviour of the 'trip reserve' feature.

When my bike (an 848, but it is the same reserve fuel design) gets to a reserve fuel level, the light comes on and the 'trip reserve' (comes to the fore and) starts to count UP. Ie, you have done X kms or mi since you hit the reserve level.

It does not indicate how far I can travel.
It means "go put petrol in!"
It's pointless.

Now, if I park my bike on a hill, the light might go off.
When I level out again, the light will come back on, and start from zero again.

Hope that helps.

PS: Sorry, you still need good maths and to be psychic. ;)

PPS: I would love to be wrong! PLEASE LET ME BE WRONG. I would love for Ducati to have put a DTE display on it.

PPPS: They HAVE included a new (to me) average consumption l/100km reading. So knowing that the reserve is 3L, you can get an idea of how far you have left. Still not good enough for me.

Rhino,

To me that is perfectly clear and easy to understand.

But then again I have owned motorbikes before so have seen this and other systems and no system so I fully know how to calculate ones own specific fuel consumption.

Guess that little bit of experience goes a long way, apparently....

The RSV4 worked in exactly the same way, once the warning light comes on it switches into the trip mode which tells you how many miles you've done since the light came on not how many miles you can do.
Obviously the big discussion then was how many miles you can do with the light on, the general consensus was 25 ish, the most i managed was 18 miles and i was starting to get worried as i was in Spain and couldn't find a petrol station.

Just as a comparison.

Pretty simple really.. Because I want the info from the horses mouth.
Everything else is hearsay.

You are probably right, and to the best of your knowledge, based upon past experience with other Ducatis and everything else you've read about this particular bike, there is a very high probability that you are right. But the reality is, it is still conjecture.
While I don't dispute your intimate knowledge with past Ducatis, until such time like Leebeeone, you have an 1199 in your hands to be able to caress day in, day out, cuddle and love to the end of your days, I will still take what Leebeeone says over what you say any day of the week. (re: the 1199)

You know what they say.. a Ducati in the hand is better than two in the brochure. ;)

P.S. Thanks for taking the time to post what info you have tho.. It is always good to gather as much info as possible. :)

L/100km....seems like a smoking gun to me...
