Last week I dropped a deposit on a 1199R.:)

The "S" has been a great, great bike and ever since I had the charcoal canister removed the bike has been perfect.

I'm curious what others that made the move would say the biggest differences were?

Obviously I know the specifications between the two.

I'd also like to add I'm sure I'm not the youngest nor the oldest to own a Panigale.;)

Eventually she will go on the track.:)

If your aiming for a heap of track time.
Sure.

If not, I'd say the upgrade is wasteful. If I had my time again, Id have gone R.

I currently own the S model and the R model. the bikes are almost exactly the same . but what you will notice is the acceleration of the R is much quicker than the S most specially in the 5,000-11,000rpm range. As for the handling, it feels the same since I am not going to adjust the swing arm any time soon.

at low speeds, the R feels like it wants to "go"faster, I think this is because of the sprocket set up or lightfly wheel, or the sprocket set up, I do not know, let go of the clutch of the r and let go of the clutch of the S and you will know what I mean, you will feel it right out of the garage.

Now the bad thing, My R tends to stall while the S does not stall. perhaps due to the lightweight fly wheel? I do know if the stalling R is just limited to my unit.

I did a write-up somewhere on the S vs. R, but it really just boils down to looks and how fast the R revs compared to the base or S model.

But congrats. The R is one of the most wicked bikes ever built.

Couldn't agree more. On the highways the R is awesome, on nice backroads she loves to flick through the turns with the greatest of ease - driving through town with traffic? OMG..

The throttle just wants to go.. she fights you to stay at low speeds..the snap response is exactly what you'd expect..

I took my wife's 848 out last weekend for a quick ride and couldn't believe the difference in throttle response between the 2 models

For a track bike the R is indulgent and not necessary just like any ducati haha. If you can afford it get it. The only real difference is the adjustable swingarm pivot and 500rpm more. The sprocket change and flywheel is something you could just bring over to the S.

The thing that keeps me trading up is I already sweat about high siding my S. with an R I think worrying about a crash would inhibit my riding too much.

Nice descriptive write up - you touched all the topics of interest :)

For serious hard revving tracking : the R is the only option.. Today another base blew at our local track... to those tracking a base engine : get the Titanium conrods ...

I'm planning to track the S maybe 2-3 times a year, now you have me thinking maybe the R would be more suitable.

That's really assuming a lot. An engine can blow for any number of reasons. Did you pull his engine and diagnose the cause on site or at your shop?

I've been to the track 5 times this year and my engine hasn't blown. I'd day you are safe. I've also seen 5 other non R 1199 models being tracked, none had issues. The S and base are more than fine for the track.

Thanks for all the information. Good stuff.

I'm looking forward to doing my own comparison, and getting on the track with it eventually.:)

2 to 3 days won't make it needed... if you ride 90% of your miles on track, i'd wouldn't doubt..
