Safety-wired Valve-cover bolts for 899/1199

I'd try though to keep them bolted, drill the heads and wire them installed.

Might not be a good idea to relieve pressure on the gasket

Too much pressure cant be good either as you squezze out the sealant and it will absolutely leak..

The objective is to toque the bolts to spec and safety wire them so that they stay that way.

Anybody have an engine on a stand and the time to take some direct measurements?

I have no access right now. I asked my tech to give me a call as soon he opens another engine. Hopefully soon. I will then take the measurements.

Thanks so much.
I'll hold off on sending my bike in for its 15,000-mile service until I've have these.
Cheers.

I'd really love to prep such a cool kit. Not only good looking, but also functional. But to be honest I don't want to take apart one of my Panis just to take the measurements and risking of having a leaking h-cyl :(

Due to the fact that my tech almost have no problems with customer engines, it will probably take some time until someone is in for a 24000 km service. I talked to him today again, and he promised to call me...

Maybe somebody else could chime in and give some info that we could proceed faster?

Christ, who would? Don't pull your bike apart, just hold off until we can get some proper measurements.

Anybody out there taking their bike in for service or any techs working on a 15,000-mile service, please consider getting the specs for this bolt kit and posting.

Thanks again.

@Styler:
Interesting... right now I am taking apart my SL. Suprised that valve cover bolts are Ti. But the heads are too low to drill them for safety wires :(

Thanks for looking into this.

Indeed, safety wiring requires new bolts with a higher profile head. That said, somebody in this forum had a dealer drill and wire their OEM bolts; however, their bike is not an SL.

Are you still going to take the measurements? Let me know if you do not plan on proceeding with this. If so, I will look for alternatives.

I hoped that my dealer is going to open an engine in the near future, but he didn't got a bike for a big service yet :(

So I had a look at multiple OEM parts list.
Since Ducati added the side panels in later models (after 2012), there are multiple versions of these screws. There are 8 different types of screws in total :)

In my opinion it would be enough to manufacture 3 different type of screws that would fit on all models including 1199R, 1299S and 899.

I try to order the OEM screws today and do some measurement.

Hi Styler

Now I've got all variants of the Ducati OEM cover bolts and I am amazed :)
There is one bolt type (77919641A) that is used on the V-Cyl for holding the side heat shields. I can't find a good way to make this screw securable with safety wire.

Probably a kit could be reduced to 4 kind of different screws, plus 4 brackets that would allow proper installation of the wires. But only for people that do not have the V-cyl side panels installed (except the SL, mounting of the side panels is completely different there).

I hesitate to go further on this project: think I would have to have at least 10 to 15 persons who'd like to order such a kit that I would not have to loose my shirt on this.

Kit would include 10 pieces of 4 different Titanium Gr5 screws with rolled outer and cutted inner threads and four lasered titanium brackets. I'm not sure that Probolt would be interested, most people never see or touch these screws.

If there would be enough interest on the forum I would build a stainless steel/aluminium prototype for a proof of concept and also to get more valuable input from you racers.

Let me know what you think

I think that most people that are interested in this hidden, functional upgrade will not be running the heat shields. The need for these is probably correlated with track riding and running the engine until the shift lights flash as you're banging through the gears. Track riders want to be able to see if a gasket is leaking and won't likely be running the heat shields. Besides, the heat shields are primarily of value when running the bike in traffic.
I don't think there is any reason to make these out of titanium, unless one has a SL and does not want to down-grade from the bling they already have.
I think I'd prefer aluminum or stainless steel.
I think I'm in.
I am in for a set.

Heatshields: I think you're right, same for me. I want to SEE whether all seals work. Titanium: I thought there would be a better chance to bring such a project alive (in the past when I did some stuff for you guys, there was always one that wants the stuff made from Ti). Aluminium is definitely too weak for the H-Cyl because the cover bolts are also used as radiator mounting studs.

Ohhhh man, I was really getting confused by the amount of different bolts used by Ducati.
At last the penny's dropped! :)

There are two kinds of valve covers:
a) The "new" inforced ones on the 1299, 1299S and R (2015)
b) The "old" ones used on all other Panigales

Since Ljuice26, b9009b, Styler and me all have 1199s with type b) covers, I will focus on them. I already made the technical drawings and keep you guys posted...

EDIT:
----------
Update #1 (17 Nov): I ordered the two cylinder valve covers (used parts on Ebay), that allows me to play around without having to open one of my engines.
Update #2 (18 Nov): I'll get the covers next week on the 23rd. Drawings revised, some minor changes.
Update #3 (23 Nov): Today I received the valve covers.
Update #4 (25 Nov): I started a new tread "http://ducati1299.com/ducati-1199/23660-billet-aluminium-cnc-3d-milled-valve-covers.html"

Update #5: Today I sent the bolt drawings to a manufacturing company in Germany. Making them in Switzerland is to expensive, I already checked :(

A bolt kit would contain 10 screws, Titanium, with enforced heads for proper safety wiring.
