As far as starting - I added a Shorai LFX14A2-BS12

If you go to Yuasa site the recommendation for the 1199 is a YT12B-BS 7.6lbs 215 CCA

I pulled out of my bike a YT7B-BS 5lbs 120 CCA

The Shorai is 1.61 lbs and has 210 CCA

I think Ducati shipped with the incorrect battery or they underestimated the required CCA and Yuasa is now recommending the correct battery.

Now that you have the Shorai in her how does she start? Where did you buy from?

Did you have to alter the fuse box position and cable lengths, as in the Motowheels kit to fit your Shorai?

No - I was able to use the stock cables with a bit of a squeeze. You cannot use the stock battery retainer though as the battery is to tall. The cables hold the battery tight and I was able to modify the plastic cover so it looks ok and is protected from direct rain.

Thanks for the info.

Interesting that you went with the smaller shorai, motowheels recommends the bigger one which I have in my streetfighter.

The lfx18

Shorai Lithium Iron LiFePO4 Battery LFX18A1-BS12

That said, this pani with stock battery turns over better than any other duc I've had. When this one fades out I'll def. get a shorai as very happy with the one in my sf.

FYI, these batteries are very sluggish in cold weather start conditions and it'll seem like the batteries dead. It was recommended to me that you turn on the key/lights while you put your gear on on cold mornings to warm things up a bit. I never had it fail to turn over on the 2nd crank in cold.

Well spotted - tstephenson is using the smaller Shorai. The Motowheels kit would be needed to fit the larger one properly. I hope they bring one out that is the same dimensions as the OEM one.

Smoke is still with me after 1400km at startup.

Those that report no smoke, blip the throttle while the bike is on the centre stand after you first start it - pretty sure you will see smoke. I though that it had gone but then realized that if I didn't blip the throttle and just rode off straight ahead I was probably just leaving it behind me. Only happens first start.

Adds to ambience, emphasizes this is a combustion engine not electric!!!

Nope. Put it on the stand and blipped it in my garage. No smoke. Just over 600 on it now. First service scheduled for next week.

So I did some checking into the different sizes of batteries to see if I could find one that would fit without modifications, and had increased CCA. According to Yuasa's website the battery you pulled out of the bike YT7B-BS is 3.6 inches high. The shorai battery you put in (LFX14A2-BS12) is 3.5 inches tall, according to Shorai's website. I wonder if Yuasa is fudging their numbers as you said the Shorai was taller than the one you pulled out?

The Yuasa battery that Yuasa recommends is even taller at 5.1 inches, so surely that wouldn't fit either. The Shorai LFX18A1-BS12 (270 CCA) is 4.1 inches tall and is the one Motowheels sells their kit with. From what I understand it is just a different sized cable that comes with this battery, and by their pictures it looks like the battery is held in with zip-ties. That doesn't impress me at all...after some time and some bumps those ties can easily break.

I would like to find a battery that will fit without modifications and that has increased CCA, guess I will keep looking around and let people know what I find. I might start with measuring my stock battery (to make sure I get good numbers) and then go from there.

Update: So with the fairing on I was able to slide a tape measurer in and get a rough estimate of height, which was just less than 4 inches. Seems like if Shorai's numbers are accurate the 210 CCA battery would fit just fine. HHmm don't know what to think with all this contradicting information from vendors.

First I think the ones who are most concerned about this bike and it's "issues" are people like me who don't have it in our hands yet.
We really need to relax and wait for the day we can really judge this bike.
That said, every Ducati I have ever had has had an issue with shutting down for no reason. The 1098 was the worst. Now I don't mind fighting this stalling issue again BUT when it coincides with hard starting when hot, well that would be a real ......

Hope it all works out. I was called and my bike will be here next week. Fingers crossed.

Mine has not stopped once unless I hit the kill switch. I can,t believe all the ........ about this bike sometimes. Buy it if you like it and don,t buy it if you don,t F**king simple.

Initially I went with the Shorai 18 based on my initial look at the Yuasa site who had the yt12b-bs as the recommended battery. However when I pulled the actual battery out I notice it was a yt7b-bs. Shorai recommends the 14 as the more powerful substitue for the yt7 and I was nervous I would damage the starter with anything more powerful.

The Shorai battery fit with the existing cables but it is a squeeze. However it also holds the battery securely. The unfortunate part is the screw down brace does not fit because its hard plastic and is not flexible enough to account for the taller battery. Best solution would be for Shorai to make a case that fits. BTW the Shorai 18 and 14 are the exact same dimensions.

Well, i thought i'd register seeing as my Ebay advert has become semi-infamous....

Yes, the advert was real. I'd actually modified it to the state you've seen after i'd done a deal on an RSV4. I'm not a novice, i've been riding sports bikes since i was a kid, i've worked in bike shops, i've raced, the Pani was my 50th bike despite the fact i've only just turned 29. I'm not rich, i had to sell all 4 of my bikes (completely sorted CBR1000RR, R6 race bike, TTR600 trailie, and an NC30) to fund buying the S.

I still stand by my comments, but then thats my opinion on the bike. I dont see why i should have to put up with so many annoying, frustrating faults/traits (or 'character' seems to be used alot...) when i've bought a 20 grand ROAD bike. Yes, it was designed for racing (something that i intended to do with the bike but more on that later) but this is still a road bike, with fancy lights and a number plate.

The midrange is unforgiveable. Maybe mine was one of the famous 'duds' i've heard about, but the fact is it was dangerous. When i first ran it in, i had a right laugh on it, absolutely thrashing it everywhere like it was an RGV 250. Difference was, on the Pani things were getting very, very illegal. At anything other than full throttle or stood still while i stared at how gorgeous it was, i hated that bike.

Racing.... Well here in the UK the Pani in standard trim would be a bloody nightmare. Take Cadwell Park's mountain, for instance. First gear? No chance, right in that flatspot. 2nd gear and slip the clutch like a 2 stroke? Maybe if it wasn't my bike....
Same goes for hairpins. Mine would lift the front wheel from 3000rpm, then it would hit the floor like a Mk1 BMW S1000rr has just initiated its ..... anti-wheelie. Then at 7000rpm it'll lift again, viciously this time, but hook second and you're straight in the flatspot midrange again. Useless.

It burns the backs of your legs, it has a rubbish sidestand certain like previous dukes, it uses oil, it stalls for no reason at the most inopportune moments (again, maybe mine was a dud).
Maybe i'm not Ducati enough to ride around all these flaws, but my RSV is just as fast, i ride it just as hard when i feel like it, and it doesnt annoy the hell out of me and make me have to excuse all its faults. I dont have to defend that bike, its perfect (for me, again, opinion)

Having said that, the Panigale is stunning, a work of art, and a true engineering wonder. But no, if i wanted something as beautiful as it is annoying, i'd buy a Desmo.

You should probably work on your salesmanship skills, unless you want to take a beating on the resale.

I got rid of the bike 3 days after putting the first 'sensible' version of the ad, then when the Aprilia turned up i thought i'd at least warn a few people. The whole purchase was a nightmare too, not to mention waiting 3 months with Ducati not being able to tell me when i'd get the bike. How can a hand built, twenty grand bike be completely untraceable? Ridiculous. Maybe Audi will sort that out though.

In that 3 months the dealer didnt phone me once, they made it feel like they were doing me a favour by letting me have one of their bikes. Also told me they couldnt get enough, demand far outweighed supply. Well they wouldnt take mine back off me (not that i would even entertain the idea, pretty sure the miserable owner would have offered half what i paid) and apparently they also have a Tri and an S that were cancelled orders that nobody seems to want. Plus the others on Ebay dont seem to sell.

The dealer i got the RSV4 from (who delivered it personally to my door, a trip of almost 200 miles for him) said that i was the third Panigale owner to trade for the RSV4.

Ducati experience was ruined before the bike turned up, so it would have had to have been perfect. Its not, the Aprilia is. So.....

Well that's too bad the Duc didn't work out for you. Luckily, the vast majority haven't had the experience you describe on here. But at least you seem to be happy with the Ape, so all good in the end for everybody I suppose.

I dont regret buying the panigale, during the dickdance i went through buying it i was extremely close to pulling my deposit and getting the RSV4. Had i done that maybe i wouldnt have loved the RSV4 as much as i did, so i dont regret buying the ducati. The Aprilia is that good a bike i'm looking at buying a second one to race next year and keeping the road bike, could never have done that with the duke on my wages, really stretched myself paying cash for the pani! Oh to be rich....

The Ape is awesome I think, and a proven winner. I like Ducs better, my opinion only, but in general I just love motorcycles, all of them.

+1 on wishing to be rich!
