Smartphone as RearView Cam Screen

HUD is the only solution I'd ever consider. The mirrors just aren't ugly or non-functional enough to justify the expense and difficulty associated with wiring in two cameras and a cell phone. Having all the dash data in my helmet, including a full rear view/side view and radar would be worth quite a bit to me, though.

yes i understand. but there is great demand for bluetooth camera and smartphone as screen. we are considering both HUD and smarphone app as solutions, with one small camera serving both applications.

thank you for you input!

Just curious: would anyone here be interested in mounting their iPhone/Android under dash and using it as a rearview cam in lieu of the mirrors or in addition to?

Great idea VAST but have you looked at the bandwidth requirements for streaming video vs what's available via Bluetooth ?

Might be possible with low res, low frame rate and the right encoding in hardware but remains to be proved.

GOPRO have their concept but it relies on WiFi

WiFi works too. We need to source camera and set parameters accordingly. Thx!

Had this same idea a couple weeks ago.

cheap and easy way i figured it out was

Camera = ai-ball cam with mount
Trek - Ai-Ball

Tripple tree mount = Scoshe iphone 5 reqcase ( for bicycles) Have to modify it a bit.

Battery adapter and splitter to charge the iphone and use the cam.

I think total for the gear was 110, and Ai-ball already has an app for the iphone and android.

My thought process is i dont ride in the rain , and if i get caught in the rain then i put the ball and phone in the bag in my pocket.

I researched cams and displays and actually this was the best solution i could think of.

I'm in OCONUS until May 2nd so wont get a chance to try it out till then.

the monitor is hideous, and i think the point is to use kit that you carry with you all the time, Like a smart phone running IOS or Android.

CORRECT! Plus we superimpose GPS and incoming calls such that we do NOT disrupt critical crucial view...and other features...

So I ordered this and tried it out. Here is the install. I used my existing iPhone RAM mount, but turned it landscape. Then I fashioned a small bracket, put velcro on it, and mounted it to the license plate. You turn on the iPhone wireless, connect to the cameras WiFi, go to its webpage, and viola, rearview camera.

I have a Cobra iRadar which has a USB in the back of the cigarette adapter plug. I can plug the iPhone into that for an extended ride. The camera has an internal battery, no idea how long it lasts. Not much lag, but there is a rather large down side. When I start the engine and ride off, the wirelesss drops immediately. I haven't had time to test further, i.e, see if it drops my home wireless if hooked to that, or is it the camera that is getting interferred with. BTW, the camera is $100, and is easy to hook up otherwise.

Great man!!!!! I will be back in the US Thursday. Are there any issues i should be aware of?

The issues are it runs on a battery, no external power possible, so not sure how long it will last. On their web site, it is only $49, but will only ship to the far east. $100 on Amazon, with Prime free shipping. It is extemely cheaply made, there is nothing to it. 1 tiny little circuit board 1/4" square. The main issue was the wireless dropping when I rode the bike, I will have to play with it some more.

between the poor quality camera, the wireless dropping and the lack of a proper app = not a great smartphone rearview solution, as i had suspected.

the right app will optimize several feature-sets and settings, with the right camera of course.
