So here's the infamous upper throttle housing with the inboard "locking tab/pin" sheered off somehow. It's a plastic tab. Lame design.

And the hole in the bar that the tab/pin falls into.

Taped up and ready to try tomorrow on the commute to work :D

I can see where DUCATI would be of the view that it's fit for purpose and not a lame design at all.

You did purchase one of the lightest street legal superbikes in the world:(
How do you think the relentless pursuit of lighter weight progresses:confused:

At times, we have to take the good with the bad.
Chalk it up to experience.
And learn to pick our battles:rolleyes:

Perhaps you could start up a competing business to DUCATI and show them how it's done?

It took years for people to understand that one doesn't just drop one of these lightweight superbikes onto it's side stand with gay abandon.
Otherwise it will eventually snap off due to fatigue, and leave the bike laying on it's side.

Sorry.
But I see this matter as part of the learning curve:(
If one wants indestructible, one should get a Harley:eek:

looking at the tab and assuming the part integrity relies on the glass fill in the plastic, the tab is not perfectly designed to allow the glass fibers to create a nice conjunction to the rest of the housing. yes, the cavity is filled in injection molding. but unless you have a really smart gate location to compensate the lack of the radius in the bottom of the tab, it will break / shear off under low loads.

first look analysis, without deep insight.

I've had some mixed feedback with both GP and Forza. Southbay so far has been good for the Ducati related stuff that I've gone in there for.

Tim at Forza has always had a chip on his shoulder. I brought my bike to them for the VR recall on the 1098/1198/848's. The first thing he asks is, "Did you buy the bike here?" I said no, then he got a little sour and adds some attitude. I got some other work down months later and that fool asked me the same ....... thing followed by the attitude.

Now with GP, when I was shopping for my 1098, I put a deposit on a red 1098 S with Josh at GP. Long story short, he sold my bike to someone else who didn't have a deposit pushing me back several months. It all worked out in the end b/c I got my deposit back and bought a bike at Ducati Santa Barbara. I went there for the Termi air bleed screw tune and the Filipino guy in service knows his stuff.

Yea i'm not sure what's up with these dealers who if you don't buy your $$$ Ducati from them, they give attitude or not a good experience at all.

I would expect that answer if I owned a Gixxer. But it's a square plastic tab going into a round hole in the bar. So they're literally putting a square peg in a round hole lol. This is definitely going under the "learning how Ducati and their dealers do business" column. Not to mention the dealer has yet to return my phone call and email. Again, this is not a huge deal but its opened my eyes and reminded me that all the hoopla about Ducati being a family, aka Ducatisti, is all marketing bs. It's a corporation with a bottom line and that is simply #1 to them. It's a cheap plastic part that broke. Just replace the damn thing lol. Tgif!

On the plus side, I just put the carbon bits and new race seat from WhitePani13 and she looks better than ever! Phil's exhaust goes on tomorrow! And zohsix's ohlins ttx to follow soon too! Haha.

Given the number of your posts on the subject I think this part of your statement is disingenuous....

Haha i see your logic, but I'm merely responding to the uber-Pro-Ducati guys telling me a failing part for many people is ok to not warranty. That's all. Really, I'm not losing sleep over this and don't plan to. You can delete the thread if you want, no biggy.

I am not a big "thread deleter"...:) Just commenting

Could you not simply drill out a small hole in the housing where the pin was and insert a metal dowel of the correct diameter into it with some epoxy resin to hold it in place? Should not take more than 20 mins with the right tools or a local engineering shop could turn a small rod out of aluminium for you if you don't have any way to make a dowel. The other alternative would be to tap a dowel into the handlebar hole itself, similar to the ones Ducati use (split sided pins) and then drill out the snapped off pin on the housing, just deep and large enough to accept the pin you fixed into the handlebar. Not sure how much material there is (depth) in the housing to drill into it, but maybe either one of these options would be viable for you. Good luck.

Don't they make a billet throttle that clamps on now?

I don't see how a inanimate chunk of plastic is a warranty claim. That's like claiming warranty for a rock smashed headlight. Just suck it up and buy a new one, or upgrade.

I'll bet your mechanic crushed it during maintenance. Didn't have it lined up proper.

Item Name:
THROTTLE CONTROL

Item Number:
66020011B

Qty: Price: 305.47

It's a $300 dollar chunk of plastic that's only available as an assembly.

Never seen a billet one...

Same happen to me before. Was trying to find aftermarket metal one but no joy so ended up buying stupid expensive Ducati one and using only that cover with a pin :(

Shocker, Ducati in Italy emailed me back about my issue with the warranty. The nice lady said she will forward my issue to the correct people and they will get back to me when everyone returns to work in mid-January. LOL, I wish I worked at Ducati and got that vacation ;)

Dude, I just bought a $20,000 USD motorcycle! If hundreds of 1199 owners worldwide have had this same problem of crappy locking PLASTIC tab sheering off I would see a duty to have the crappy part replaced. I would not say it's an owner caused issue. That's effed up.

There's a plastic stopper that brakes off easy and this is my second throttle assembly. Part no# 66020011B. Completely disassembled mine and modified my throttle assembly.

Gee, there was just a thread about this problem recently and the dealer not covering it under warranty. You might want too look for that thread. It's just been in the past couple of weeks that it was an active thread.

Lol, can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but if not, that was my thread. That's why I hate Ducati customer service and will trash them until they make it right. I emailed Ducati USA and someone emailed me back from Bologna and said they will check into it and get back to me in a month or so. Whatever
