So, the SECOND broken rear header!

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

I seriously doubt the temperatures/useage environment. I believe it's an engineering/manufacturing issue regarding welding metallurgy and welding technique, most likely at the supplier. If the welds are too brittle, they will crack and break. The welding science is fairly cut and dry but the application isn't. I've had a Harley aftermarket exhaust support break in half from the vibration within a hundred miles where another aftermarket (Vance & Hines) exhaust system held up just fine after thousands of miles and still going. So far, so good on the Duc exhausts although I've only put a few thousand miles on them in the track environment - much more consistent and easier than Shilling's. But these are still street bikes (barely but still...).

Just a heads up. My bike just had the rear header snap at the flange AGAIN! Ducati North America denied a warranty claim on it, stating that because I have a non Ducati authorized part on it (the Termignoni front exit slipon) they were denying the claim.

I pointed out that for 30 years, Termignoni WAS the only authorized Ducati exhaust partner, but they didn't care. Under the Magnusen-Moss act, I could go after them, but at the moment, I have way too much going on in my life to chase after them for $800-$1,200.

I always modify my bikes and know going into it that on occasion I am going to run into something like this, but it's disappointing and more to the point, the rear header has now failed TWICE in the identical place. I will be putting the stock mufflers back on, to see if the problem happens again.

After only a little over 10,000 miles on this bike, having the rear header fail twice is giving me some concern quite frankly.

We shall see if the issue re-occurs with the stock muffler setup. In the meantime, I am waiting for a reply from Termignoni Italy to see if THEY are aware that Ducati is blaming their product for this issue.

if you wanted to make this an issue you absolutely can. For ducati to deny your claim they would have to prove that the termignoni cans were the reason the header failed. you did say its not worth it to you to do that and by all means thats your call. but by not fighting it is how these companies get away with things.

Now I have a good excuse for my wife, "I have to ride more, need to make sure I break my exhaust before the warranty goes"

Ducati does not back their products well.. I have a brake rotor that is warped from day one and the dealer stated "Yeah Ducati has stopped backing problems with the Brembo rotors"
That is on top of all the other ........ I have had to go through with this bike I have lost my patience with it and the dealer and Ducati factory:mad:

That is probably why after less than a year and paying over $30K for my bike including the Akropovic 'Factory" exhaust the dealer would only offer me $15K for the bike...:mad::mad::mad: IT will be my last Ducati... They cannot even fix the terrible throttle response and stated that I should just keep it above 5000 rpm if it want to ride it without it surging... I am done with Ducati.. MY next bike will be a BMW S1000RR I rode one and it is smooth and fast and will run off and leave my 1299S....

i know Ducatis have problems but trust me BMW's have lots of issues too! and keep in my mind they are worst issues to deal with than not having a smooth throttle or a broken weld on a header piece.

i personally have 2 friends right now with S1krrs with broken transmissions.
1 had her transmission gone south twice and another friend has had multiple clutch and transmission issues. but dont take my word for it. as you browse in the BMW forums you will see that these issues are fairly common and while most people thought that these issues were addressed with the 2015 revision, there has been reported trans and clutch issues on 15+ models. i love the s1000rr and there is no denying its a faster bike than the panigale but the reason i didn't get it is because i rather deal with replacing a broken header pipe than replacing a transmission.
also in regards to your argument about resale values. if you research resale values on BMW's you will see that they are as bad as ducatis. yes your akrapovic exhaust was 5grand but you should have known that it only adds $500 if that to the value of the bike. its like that with any manufacturer not just with ducati.

so if you want 100% reliability you are going to have to go the Jap route.
My honda and yamaha never gave me any problems but they werent as fun to ride as my ducatis

You can't go wrong with the BMW S1000RR. I put over 56,000 miles on my 2011 and only had a couple of minor issues with it. I still prefer the Panigale 1299S, because it just has bags more character and is a bit wilder (and looks better), but the modern day crop of liter bikes are an embarrassment of riches; not a bad one among them...

Yeah well I am fed up with the 'Ducati Character" It has been in and out of the shop more times than I can count I have about 6K miles on it (and about 1/3rd of them are just riding up to the shop and back) ...I'm done I have spent enough time and energy trying to get it to run the way it should have in the first place...

I had a 2011 ZX10R which I ran the crap out of at the track and it never gave me any problems at all! I wish I had kept it..

The "Duckmare" is pretty but that is about the extent of its advantage as far as I am concerned.. Just like a beautiful but difficult woman Even though she looks great I am tired of putting up with her crap..Especially since the dealer has more or less given up trying to help me anymore..

Dont say that.. I had a couple of mechanical failures with bullet proof hondas,Vtr1000f & RC51. One that left me stranded the whole summer.

update

I realize this an old thread.. but those interested and for the record..my header just broke at the flange... 2015 1299 bone stock with no modifications and has 5k miles. Dealer just submitted the claim couple of days back.. so waiting on Ducati to authorize the repair.. hopefully..
