Taking a long trip...

Does anyone have pictures of the Ducati Tail bag mounted and how hard was it to mount? I don't have the passenger seat on.

My pics are at the beginning of this thread. It will mount on either tailpiece. It is very simple, you just intall a strap under the seat that has clips. You slide the tailbag over the end of the tailpiece (it has a pocket the tip fits into), then snap the clips. I suggest covering the tailpiece with clear plastic, i.e. Tankslapper.

You guys now have me seriously considering a tail bag. I always thought they just looked funny but I hate wearing a backpack. I go on 2 or 3 day rides often and need some supplies but not to much. I have learned to be very compact. For the week long rides I am planning on this summer, I will be riding with some Harley friends and they have PLENTY of storage space to help out :D

They could practically carry your bike for chrissake!

Thank you Trauma!

For day rides, it's the Ducati tail bag, which has the expandable section and fits everything I need PLUS wet weather gear!

For weekenders and long trips, I use the Ventura 'Boral 1' bag system, which suits the Panigale. I will take some pictures when I get my bike back - it's currently getting 3M protective film applied.

The 'Boral 1' bag is 47 litres and a must for taking most of what you need, plus the wet weather gear.

The oem tank bag would probably surprise people, it's a lot bigger than you'd think (or at least I thought). It's actually big enough that just slouching from a normal riding position is enough to have your chest make contact with the bag. This would be great for a long interstate ride, not so much for any type of aggressive riding.

If I'd known this before I bought it I would have gone for the tail bag. The tank bag isn't bad enough that I'd never use it though.

I didn't go tank as it isn't easy to remove all the hardware. The tailbag pops on/off in seconds.

K-25....best pack I've ever worn...even use it to go on trips while flying. Weight distribution harness is amazing.

The Kriega bags come with lots of different straps giving you a lot of different options. Here's how I mounted mine...

Front:
Remove your rear seat (or solo cowl) and you'll see two allen bolts securing the seat lock. These bolts are what I used to hard-mount two straps in the trunk. Simply remove the one on the left and bolt the end of a Kriega strap down. Then repeat for the right (I used slightly longer bolts).

You got a pic to show exactly how you secured the two front straps with the seat lock bolts?
This seems like a good solution. Looked at one of these today at a dealer and was just wondering how you secured the strap with the bolts.

I took pics, but they're MIA, somewhere buried in the 9000 other pictures I have.

I think I even posted the pics somewhere on the forum....but it doesn't matter. Pull off your tail cover and you'll see two bolts securing the latch mechanism that locks the tail cover/passenger seat in place. You just need to remove one, go to a hardware supply store that doesn't suck, get a longer bolt (I can't recall what size they were) and bolt the Kriega aluminum strap down with one that's a few mm longer. Then repeat on the other side.

I can get pics soon if I can't find 'em. The install takes 2 min. and the solution is definitely tried and true. And Kriega bags (and the company) simply rock.

And that ....... RSR isn't shitting you. The backpacks are sick. I just got an R30 and it's ....... brilliant.

Me and a couple of guys are meeting up for a riding week in Tennessee Carolinas area... so I am faced with a roughly 900 mile ride to get there... How are you guys that do distances on the 1199 carrying stuff?? I don't see that the tail/tank bag designed by Ducati would really hold that much stuff....

I had a kreiga R25 and both a US20 and US10 arrive in the mail today
All looks very good gear

I have the tank bag; I love it for long rides. I also have the Kriega 25 litre back pack; I hate it for long rides.
I will probably use my tank bag and my Kriega US 20 tail pack and US 10 side bags for my trip to the Austin Moto GP in April. Now, all I have to do is figure out how to mount the tail pack without screwing up the paint.
It looks like the tail pack comes with a nice base (like the tank bag); which could be the perfect platform for the Kriega US20+ 2 US10 setup for long trips, and the tail bag and tank bag for overnights.
Now, the next question is: What tires for such trips?

here it is on mine this past fall. i like the bag. it's stable and fits quite a bit for its size. but most certainly run the pillion under it or some sort of paint guard to protect the tail section.

it doesn't hold too much. i pack light and in no way can i ride wearing a back pack... just doesn't work for my shot back and is too uncomfortable personally. Packing light, I can get a long weekend + a bit out of it. but for a week long + trip, something will be needed. PS. i've had a tent, bed roll and sleeping bag bungied to this thing as well and it didn't move an inch at speed.

I'm thinking I missed the joke here between the capt & antihero... Really, I can't think of anyone on this thread with more experience in long distance touring on this specific bike than anti-hero (by a great margin).

QUOTE=Capt CF;46313]Hopefully someone with some real world experience will chime in on this luggage thread. No offense Antihero, but I don't need to know what you use to haul your Tom's shoes home from Starbucks with a triple grande white chocolate mocha in tow. ;)

I'm torn between the 15 and the 20. I don't carry shoes or a laptop in there, but usually a pair of gloves, another shield, maybe a thicker pair of socks, etc. when dealing with spring and fall weather where the temp changes drastically from the AM commute to the PM ride home.[/QUOTE]

Geeze jay, that was 5 weeks ago - why does it even matter. Just cuz someone says they have done something a million times, dosen't make it better than a guy that did it once. Then only read his if you wish.

If every post talked to a bike, and not a forun member, things would sure be smoother - oh well..
