Yesterday I travelled 3 1/2 hours to the closest dealer to test ride their 950 demo.

I am 6'1" and tip the scales at 125kg. I have 50 years of motorcycling experience, having started very young, and I will confess to being a bit of a hooligan.

Before leaving the dealership I disabled all of the rider assist with the exception OF ABS which I set at 2 in sport mode.

My observations are as follows;

The rear suspension on the bike seemed to be at max preload, meaning the ride was less than comfortable, even with my fat arse on it. The engine accelerates nicely, and the brakes are delightful. That said, I was disappointed that the bike did not wheely without significant rider input. A bit of clutch in 2nd addressed that, but I felt a bit more torque in the midrange is needed.

I was surprised at the amount of vibration that could be felt both through the seat and the bars. My reference point for this statement is based on my previous VTR Firestorm. After 30 minutes my wrists were "tingling". I think that familiarity and some bar adjustment might result in me having a "lighter touch". Not a showstopper, but I had not expected it.

Handling felt sharp, and dropping it into a corner required little effort, and mid corner direction change was good, even with the rear suspension set too hard. I think that I will never be able to ride it to its limits, and that it requires someone far more skilled (brave?) than I to do so.

Overall the bike was confidence inspiring, and I look forward to being able to get one on some decent twisties, and also onto the gravel.

I am tossing between the RVE and the SP.

QUESTIONS

From what I read, there are many who feel the suspension is a bit stiff, especially the Marzochi variety, is the Ohlins setup worth the extra dough for the SP?

Understanding that my bulk is likely to be inhibititing wheelies under acceleration, what options exist to beef up the midrange?

Is the quickshifter really a value proposition?

Being 3 1/2 hours from the nearest dealer, what recommendations for paddock stands? I will need to ship the wheels back for new rubber as required?

Has anyone put wider bars on? I like the trail bike stance, but I found the mirrors useless as all I can see is my arms...

Has anyone fitted dual purpose tyres for playing on gravel? And if so, which ones and thoughts?

Cheers

Taz

A couple more questions...

Is the Ohlins on the SP manual adjust or controlled by the electronics?

Has anyone fitted a smaller front sprocket to address the midrange torque shortage? Does this require the speedo to be recalibrated?

Has anyone done any testing on the wheely control settings? Is there an explanation of how it works? Does it kick in once the front wheel hits a certain height? Does the height change with each setting? Does it kill the throttle? Or is it just a mild but noticeable reduction?

Answering all these questions will completely ruin yer sense of wonder. Buy a poster of the bike and hang it on yer bedroom wall and never lose that sense of wonder

Once my sense of wonder is ruined I will be happy. Deciding between the RVE or the SP, some of the above will influence which one

I have the SP. Hard to ever regret going for ohlins, the ride is not harsh at all when dialed in for your weight and style of riding.

Drop a tooth on the front sprocket or up 3 in the rear, or both. Star Ace airbox mod, decat and aftermarket exhaust, engine tune.

I love the quickshifter, but if you enjoy blipping the throttle, that works just as well.

Get yourself a no mar tire changing tool. Not hard to change tires yourself with some practice.

If you prefer more mid range and easier wheelies you could looks around for a nice 1100.

Nice, I hear that. I said The sfv4 is my last new bike. Now I’m looking at the Royal Enfield interceptor 650 haha

I just got a new 950 Hyper Red.

When I went for test ride I didn't feel much about suspension (cause, i was too excited I think about how awesome Hyper is ).

After I got my brand new spanking one, on the very first ride into the hills / country side I also felt I think like you: that the stock Marzocchi is hard / hash. I didn't feel that for the rear, the front I felt is hash. I even wanted to drop tire pressure a bit.

However, on the second ride another day I was already getting used to it. Also, I havent' adjusted anything yet at all on it, I will do at least basic suspension setup, you know, for weight / height.

From what I understand Marzocchi are still pretty awesome suspension, and I could't justify the extra for the gold bling bling of Ohlins on SP.
I want to put quite few aftermarket things on , and possibly once I got used to my Hyper I may even upgrade fork internals & shock.

Quickshifter : fk yes. I tested Hyper with it, and it was good. Plus, my other bikes have it, and it's just a got used to thing now.
However, it's also super fun to just blip that Hyper motor ! :D
The qs was part of my deal for Hyper and I'm getting it after 1st service.

Cheers.

After a cosiderable amount of procrastination, and being highly aware of the cost of imported parts, i will pick up my SP on Monday morning. I have a set of radiator/oil cooler protectors that will fit at the dealership before I ride it.

I have looked at the accessories available, and I think a set of the hepco & Becker c-bow panniers and tail rack are likely to be my only mods.

I checked out various exhaust options, and it seems there is no real increase in midrange or power, and at 120kg, I am unlikely to notice any weight difference.

As for carbon trinkets, they don't do it for me. A mobile phone handlebar mount should just about wrap it up for me.

Good luck with yours, enjoy much!
