The first engine Ducati built. Nice contrast to the V4 and some history.

I was getting some instruments serviced by a guy who has a collection of some nice old bikes. He asked me if I wanted to see the first Ducati motor they ever built.

Here it is and it was designed to fit to pushbikes. It was a pull rod motor not a push rod motor. Peter who owns it was very knowledgable about its history and how it worked. You could buy them from a department store and fit them to your pushbike. Apparently very popular here in Australia many years ago.

A little bit of Ducati history. It is amazing how far they have come with technology and engineering. Great for all of us.

It was called the Cuciiolo.
Which means “puppy”
For those who have been to Borgo Panigale factory, they have the whole history with actual examples.
But even before the Cuciolo, if memory serves me correctly, Ducati built electronic components and radios.

Yes all that is correct. You can see the name on the pic. Due to a shortage of fuel after WW2 Ducati was encouraged to diversify into bicycles and cheap motors to add to bicycles. So this is the first engine they built to fit to a bike.

Cool history for Ducati. The engineering was good even back then. The mechanism which the owner showed me to allow the pedals to free wheel with the engine running was great.
