I purchased a 22' V4 and had to shell out a little under $400 for 3.7 qts of Motul and the pleasure of watching my dealer plug a Ducati branded Texa into the bike for the 1000 mile break in checks. I work on bikes ranging from cruisers, sport tourers to track toys and I feel $400 rings a bit hot. However, the cost to establish a shop full of lifts, tools and Navigator TXTs is extreme, so I understand. Nevertheless, without that Texa handshake to DNA, the bike will apparently never shift the rev limiter indications to designed and you will be forever stuck with a change oil icon prompt at start up, a yellow caution light and the rev limiter will flash north of 7,500. I cruise open highways fairly quickly so it is a distraction and nuisance.

Not be outdone, my buddy bought a SFV4 and had the service done a week later. Because (per a DNA service bulletin) it takes 2 hours to measure the oil in the sump, the mechanic wanted to measure how much oil actually drains out and they justified charging him for this time on the stand. The end result, The $600 oil change and they didn't even use Shell, it was Motul. That is correct, no fairings to remove. Remove a drain plug, filter, add some Motul, adjust the chain, check for updates and codes and a hit up a few torques around the caliper area, $600. Here is the catch, all the Ducati dealers in Florida are now doing this.

When it was all said and done, both bikes were overfilled but we each now know exactly how many ml of used oil will drain from our V4 engines, minus the soaked filter assembly- btw, the amount was actually different between the bikes.

Anyone ever heard of charging a client an extra 2.0 hrs of shop time to let the oil drain out?

I am on the short list for a Texa Navigator TXB, however their contract with DNA states they cannot release current year software. I will pick this up when the 2022 Texa is available to us mortals and any Ducati types in the Tampa Bay area can message me, $20 for a service light reset and it includes a free beer out of the keg.

Is this even legal under the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act? Can they require you to go to the dealer and have them perform a service to restore full function of the bike?

$450 and has the same functionality as the Navigator TXT less the software updates. It will even do the parameter recording while moving, which I think Texa calls dynamic tests.

My dealer mentioned the 2 hour thing but certainly didn't charge extra labor for it. IIRC, he had even mentioned using a vacuum pump to make sure all of the oil was out. None of this prevented them from overfilling it. Hence why I bought the OBDStar to take care of that stuff myself.

Hello,
Hopefully not a dumb question. I am looking into getting a new Ducati V4r or the S1000RR. I am new to the electronics age due my last bike was a 04 R1 that didn't have all this on it. Question I have is with the new bikes do you always have to take it in to get it rest for the lights not to be on even just doing an oil change after the break in period. Appreciate any input one this.

You can reset a BMW service light, mileage and annual with a device called a GS-911. Apparently OBD Star and Texa (OEM for Ducati) allow you to do the same as well.

On the high-performance Ducati's and BMW's, they come from the factory with limiters that are raised after break-in at the first service check. They need to be linked up to factory software to perform this change.

Texa has an agreement not to sell the software until the following year, so 2023 for a MY 22. When you purchase the Texa you get a one year annual subscription that allows you access to firmware and ECU updates for that model year. If you found a new 2021, you could buy Texa software and cables for about $2300 (you provide the laptop) and reset the firmware for the higher tach.

To answer your question, no. You are off to the dealer for the first visit. Option 2, Bren tune the bike, however I am not sure that will change the tachometer warnings in the dash on an S1000RR before break-in. The manufactures have put encryption into the dash and it seems the dash holds the key to the maintenance lights, tach warnings, etc.

I can't speak on the BMW, but there's no limiter on a Ducati. The tach shift indicator comes on earlier, but that's it.

Technically, my 2021 isn't supported on OBDStar's device but since the US EU4 bikes are basically the same as the 2020 bikes, it works. Some features are broken, like I can't reset the PIN code, but I don't know if that's a model year issue or something else. The devices are just reading Ducati's CAN bus. I think the model year thing really only applies if you are intending on writing firmware to the individual controllers, which I haven't even saw an option for doing that with the OBDStar.

I bought a Texa Axone tablet, software, and cables because apparently I’m OCD and like wasting money and not caving to the dealership. Anyone in the DC metro area can bring over some beer and I can reset your light.

Sounds like the latter dealer charged the 1hr cool down time (they have to change the oil, run the bike, then wait approx 1 hr for it to cool before checking it again) as labor hours. If you ride the bike in, they have to wait for it to cool down for 1hr before popping off the drain plug. This is not a billable waiting time since it doesn't need to be on a lift yet.

Which they seemingly didn't even do because they overfilled it.

No excuses for the dealer, they robbed y'all. But you also aren't really in a position to complain because it was blatant robbery you should have caught. It would have taken 30 seconds to google the price of oil and see if they overcharged you for it or not. It would have taken 1 "why are you charging 2 labor hours for this job?" question to see what is going on.

More money than sense. Next time change the oil yourself, quite possible the world's easiest maintenance job requiring minimal tools, and just take it to the dealer to have the maintenance reminder reset if you don't want to shell out cash for tech to do it yourself.

I’m running the Texa IDC5 software on their Axone II. It’ll work on any year Duc equipped with the Euro 4 cable. I reset the service light on a 2022 XDiavel today. I have the Euro 5 cable on hand for the new R1’s and Ape’s but the software for the Duc’s isn’t there yet. I’m told it will be this month. When that happens, it will also work on the 2022’s.

I’m in Austin, TX if anyone needs it.

It’s been worth every penny so far. I own a small performance shop and use it daily. It has a lot of features that the Snap-on P1000 and OBD lack. Interactive wiring diagrams, technical sheets, etc. The customer service is the best I’ve come across as well.
