The return of the Dry Clutch

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

My sx450 runs a wet clutch and I change oil every 3hrs max as the oil goes black very quickly due to clutch use.
In my 2c worth opinion, a dry clutch will allow oil not get contaminated as quickly.

Exactly why I would prefer a dry clutch, I believe this is behind me possibly toasting my 1299s motor!
Haven't split it yet but think the root cause is a degraded clutch which had contaminated the engine oil.

Well, first I believe that the factory friction disc material is organic which isn't a huge offender unless of course the friction plates have become so worn that they are now at the base material which is aluminum. Secondly, the wet setup has been fairly bulletproof. If you think you blew a motor because of a degraded clutch then my first point of contact would be my mechanic or service department (in my case, me) who let it get to the point where it became a problem. The wet clutch for the most part under normal riding conditions is a "set it and forget it" system. If like i stated earlier (and I see this regularly) the rider is hard on the clutch trying not to stall the bike, it may warrant more regular attention.

Apologies a little off topic I know!

1299s had done 11k very hard miles, upon inspect the plates are very worn and the basket is also shot. Approx 3k since last oil change.
The bike was running close to the rev limiter in 6th when the event occurred, no smoke and would still run but the engine had some degree of a mechanical rattle that appeared to come from front top of the motor!
Won't know until the motor is opened up but it locked while running at tick over after fresh plates/basket install.

In hindsight at the miles the bike has done the oil should have been changed sooner!

I'm happy that with a dry clutch a deterioration of a clutch pack won't contaminate the oil like what 'could' be possible with a wet clutch.
Obviously regular oil changes would reduce the chance of this!

"after talking with team riders Chaz Davies and Alvaro Bautista, that the wet clutch wasn’t able to offer the same kind of feedback they need when braking into a corner. Both riders tested the Panigale V4 R race bike in Jerez last week, with wet clutch and with dry clutch, and their opinion is that the dry clutch offers better feedback from engine brake function, meaning they’ll be able to go around the corners much faster since they’re able braking is much more stable"

There ya go. Now I personally like the dry clutch because I like screwing with parts and making things however the decision to go with the dry clutch was clearly laid out in the copy and paste from the article and the decision was based on a set of circumstances that well, just do not apply to anyone here sans a couple of guys who have some trophies on the wall. If you like the dry clutch because you like it, great but the parking lot jabber of how awesome this is going to be from a performance perspective going up the canyon road are fantasy. The clutch looks cool and if you are hard on the F plates, then a bit easier for the DIY crown to deal with but you and I are not going to have an epiphany with the dry over the wet set up. It's a performance upgrade for Davies and Bautista seasoned pros and test riders riding a highly modified, sophisticated, hand built WSBK on a closed course. It is not a usable (from a rider capability perspective) "performance" upgrade for 98% of the Rs that will be sold.

Darn, I wish you told those guys I said HI and Thanks for the Dry clutch.. I Love this forum again!!!!

Well that would certainly be a step in the right direction. It best for them to use proven aftermarket components. I honestly don't think they will throw STMs top flight dry unit in the delivered units. I think this was a photo opp. Lastly they made it clear that the dry inclusion on the Dealer bike was for compliance spec

Well, you are wrong my friend.

Haha I couldn't not say it. If someone else commented that I world have thought " your cool, ....". I'm really a easy going guy. I guess getting my leg amputated had me in a mood! 😆 🤣 😂 from this to this. Still riding though!

Respect that you’re still riding bro. 👊

How’d you injure your leg?
