This is what it looks like when you water pump lets go on your new 15R

4 weeks for a water pump? That's seriously poor. And the spring sunshine today made it impossible not to want to go for a fang.

Lol. That's the worst thing. Best possible time to be riding right now.
Oh well hopefully its done quickly.

Not good that a lot of people are suffering from similar situations.

it can leak from a split thermostat housing (i've had 2 replacements installed on my 2013-R) the hose clamps or weep hole - if it leaks from the weep hole, the water pump needs attention

Can anyone confirm 100% this frickin hole weeping fluid is an issue with the water pump? All my other motorcycles had the damn water pump accessible and outside of cases and the pumps have weep holes to indicate a problem. My Honda CBR pump weeped around 9,000 miles not 100.

so *nothing* is supposed to come out of the weep hole? then why have a hole? one puts holes in things when they want something to either go in or come out.

Al water pump housings have it - when fluid leaks out, it's a sign the pump is toast

Special thing with Superquadro engine is that the water pump is located completely in the engine oil area. So the "weep channel" goes from the pump through the engine case to the left engine side ending there.

It's very strange for me that even after the replacement of the water pump at my 1299 there is still the same small amount of coolant coming out of the weep hole while riding. I think that's not supposed to be normal!

there are 3 liters of coolant in the system. losing a few drops each ride is normal.

Is your bike also dropping coolant from the weephole? I don't think it has to be accepted as normal.

My former 1199 did not loose its coolant....not one drop came out of this hole in almost 12,000 km.

I spoke to the head Ducati technician at my dealership at length about weep holes the other day. They are designed to release drops of coolant under certain conditions, in small amounts. This is to protect the bearing seal and to give the coolant that builds up there a place to escape; otherwise pressure would build up and damage the bearing.

If you're getting a *consistent* flow of coolant from the weep hole, then the water pump is about to fail because the seal is broken.

I don't get coolant drops on every ride, but it happens. The drops are never enough to drip far from the hole before drying. I just wipe that part of the engine case clean.

As we can see in this thread, the level of coolant leakage seems to be really different, from some drops from time to time in your case (which I agree is no reason to worry) to bigger amounts visible under the bike.

In my case it's not so much coolant that it drops on the ground, but it is sometimes enough (after putting the bike on the side stand) to flow down at the side of the alternator cover and to dry away here at the bottom end.

I asked my dealer again about this issue, waiting for answer.

The temp sensor has two O rings and have been known to drip . I have replaced one its a easy fix .

I know, but at my bike the coolant is clearly leaking out of the weep hole, all other possible leaking points at the thermostate housing (incl. the temp sensor seals) and hoses are fully dense.

There should not be any leaks. It was not designed to leak. If there is a leak then there's a problem, whether an insignificant one or a serious one, it is still a defect. My squirter leaked on my 1199S. It was fixed successfully

Tomorrow the Ducati technical fieldforce is visiting my dealer, he will question the issue to this guy.

Let's see what the reply will be.

The Ducati technician said that the water pump should be replaced again, my dealer will do this after end of the season late October.

If this doesn't fix the coolant leak, there is only one last possible reason for the leak, the engine housing split lane. If so, new engine has to be installed.

I really hope it's the water pump, but I have some doubts that two pumps (original one and new one) have the same failure.

Dam lets hope its just the water pump.

Don't worry about the oil though (unless it's excessive!?). The R's will do that due to those skinny ass two ring pistons. My dealer told me about it before I even took the keys and he threw in a couple of litres for me.

Thanks for the update. I know it would suck to tie the bike up for a little bit of what's left of the season but I'd almost demand they replace it now so you can see if you still have the leak before season is over. Who knows how long it would take to get your bike together waiting on a whole engine from Italy. So nobody was concerned with a catastrophic failure of the water pump in the next month or so if that was again the problem? If the water pumps are the issues for all of us does a failure happen gradually or quickly? As to say leave you stranded out on the road somewhere.
Did the other guy in this thread with a replaced water pump completely fix his weeping hole? This is definitely something I want to keep on top of and have corrected with warranty if need be. Thanks.

I had 3 water pump overhauls in 6 months on the first of the KTM RC8s,
one overhaul lasting less than 60 miles.
Sometimes .... happens, sometimes mechanics are just not that good.
Either way it gets to be bloody annoying.

My 2013 1199R needed 2 thermostat housings replaced...both with the same issue (a split at the plastic seam)
