Throttle slack

Folks, I recently replaced the handlebars on my 21 SF V4S. When putting the throttle back in I accidentally put it in the wrong way (there’s two ways to insert the handle into the throttle housing). It felt great and removed all slack in the throttle. Since then I put it back in the original orientation and it’s back to the way it came from factory with a little slack.

I was wondering if anyone else has seen the same thing.

The only issue would be checking to see if you can still hit 0% and 100% throttle. There are channels in the tube of the throttle for the pins which keep the housing from rotating ride. I don't know if it can be installed up side down and still have the same range of motion.

Good to hear from you bp! I know the ones you are talking about. I had forgotten to drill a hole for those pins and so throttle was sticking. But as far as slack it was awesome. The most responsive I’d felt since I bought the bike. I know there’s a debate about the safety of slack v no slack in the throttle. I have to say it felt pretty good without.

I’m going to give it another go in a week or so (spent too much time wrenching this week!). I was hoping someone else may have had similar experience.

I did it on the 1299 after a hot tip on here and it wouldnt start- no zero throttle

Thanks Paul. Good to know. I’ll see how it goes now I’ve got the handlebar holes drilled correctly.

There are other bikes which have ride by wire throttle and no slack. Its more of what the manufacturer decides to do then what is better for you.

My S1000XR is like that. But the power delivery is a lot smoother (not saying that’s better, just different).

Its something that can be tuned to how you like it. I'm so use to the way Ducati has it I don't see needed to change it. If I want it shorter and quicker, I set it to engine high. Slower and smoother, low.

I know ;) I use min engine braking and smooth throttle/low power in tight canyons. It’s pretty good but still no match for the smoothness of the S1000 engine and throttle (in any of its settings). Not complaining. The rawness of the SF is what I love about it.

Same thing with DQS. BMW is flawless. (Another thread I know!)

I can ride my S1000 faster at the moment (it’s easier to ride). I love the Ducati experience though. I came close to going to an S1000R but couldn’t give up on the SF. I’ve got ergos, suspension, and throttle sorted. Hopefully the cordona sorts out my DQS woes. If not, I’ll stick with manual shifting (works for my friend on his 1198 Pani).

If I was racing for money I'd probably pick a BWM or Yamaha. For pure enjoyment, Ducati.

I'd love to see a comparison of BWM's throttle map vs Ducati's.

What software/hardware would I need to capture the throttle maps?

Ducabike throttle spacers in. Honestly, the slack wasn’t a big deal. I got used to it pretty quickly. Going to be interesting how this goes in the canyons.

It seems Woolich's software exposes them, but at minimum its $100 per bike. The software is free once you buy something. So in this theoretical endeavor, one would have to buy the Bin File Definitions for both.

Thanks! I’ll check it out.

Throttle slop makes me crazy. In canyon hairpins, it's that extra 1/10 second to get on the gas where you almost tip over waiting for a response. No thanks.
I did that DIY version with the heat shrink tubes. Works great. Feel is 100% better.

That’s what I was thinking. Heat shrink solution is very cool :)

I went out today for a short ride around town. I can notice the difference. I was surprised at how much. For some reason it felt more responsive and also like I had more fine control.

I’ll see this weekend when I do my canyon runs if it still holds true (I could also be imagining all of this ;)

I’m slowly getting the bike tailored to suit me. It’s interesting how much work that takes (I do enjoy it though). I ordered a brentuning kit a few days ago so will be interesting to see how that affects things.

Went out for a nice ride tonight. EBC on minimum, throttle low power and smooth, and no throttle slack thanks to my newly inserted spacers. It was pretty awesome. Very smooth around town. I’m very happy.

Medium and High engine is fine on the open road at speed, but around town I like I bit more refinement.
