Tire Warmer truth/myth

Here's my .02....

1) Don't use tire warmers to provide a false sense of confidence that you can hammer the throttle out of the gate and all will be ok. You can crash on a cool day when air and track temps are low. It can pull the heat out of the tire and still contribute to a crash even after a full lap. I know from experience.
2) From what I've heard and read I wouldn't be concerned with heat cycles. You will run out of rubber before heat cycles ever become an issue.
3) I do agree that warmers do their job to soak the tire and wheel to help you get accurate tire pressures set before you go out and it does give you some confidence and improved grip out of the gate and like others said, a must when racing.
4) Also you need to consider what your trying to accomplish and what your current pace is. The stock Panigale Supercorsa's provide tons of grip with no need to use warmers. Warmers can be a hassle and extra work at times. I've used them instead of slicks at times on cold days and during a 2 day class cause I wanted to focus on the class and not mess with warmers in between sessions.
5) I do believe as you get quicker slicks will last longer with their design than a stock DOT tire.
6)Dunlop does NOT recommend leaving warmers on all day. I believe their literature says not to leave them in the warmers for more than 2 hours.
7) I have digital warmers but you could easily just get a single temp and be fine and less to mess with.

Hopefully this helps...

WTF is that supposed to mean? If I'm full of .... and way off base and you got something to say then say it.

Wasn't meant for you old mate, I was responding to fens.

"No I haven't used tyre warmers because they were a luxury I could not afford, however I did race in the Australian Superbikes Series at the highest possible level for a few years,so I do know a a bit about getting tyres to grip, I think my point is ,what's the hurry to go so quick on a practice/ride day?.... me ,tossers I say, stop ....... around and ride the ....... thing!!going quick on cold tyres is part of the art of racing and tyre warmers are no substitute for a few laps to make em work."

Ahh got it! I just posted and saw that with no reference so assumed you were talking to me. My bad...

I complete agree with your post now! LOL

Suppose he'll hunt me down at Eastern Creek to make sure I'm not ....... around and wanking myself off in the toilets before a session  it's so difficult to squeeze that nervous piss out with a horn.

One other point I forgot that was mentioned by @reganc

8) With slicks and even with warmers you need to keep your pace up to keep the heat in them. They're not for cruising around and do not come up to temp and hold temp like DOT street tires.

So you raced in ASBK and are asking on the forum about tire warmers ??? ASBK round you would use 3 sets of tires a round and cant afford warmers ? Who is wanking ? Piss off !

.... off cockhead and get your hand off your small penis, its knobs like you that spend more time looking at your bike than riding the fucken thing,in the early 90s tyre warmers were only for the very fast factory riders that i had the privilege of sharing the track with , Troy Corser, Daryl Beattie, Mick and Scott Doohan, Gary Mcoy, Anthony Gobhert , to name a few,(back then you were probably still shitting yellow) privateers could not afford such luxuries, you need to stop thinking about why you are so fucken slow and grow some balls, or if you really want to man up go and test your skills in a race and be prepared to eat some humble pie. Oh and i did not ask about tyre warmers, i merely made the comment"why do you need to go fast on the first lap on a track day"makes no sense to me ,and i made do with two sets of tyres over the weekend.

It's getting a bit heated, I think I might grab a beer and go into the garage and stare at the bikes. I'm only in the medium fast group because I don't want to be in the way of the fast guys and I'm not playing for cattle stations on my ride days, been around a while but too old and takes so long to heal now days even ribs are now an involved process.

I don't pretend to be super fast now and actually let it be known I never was, If people are happy with warmers let em do it the less time sitting in the ....... heat because some nob has crashed on the first lap and needs Medics the better.

Yeah i'm hearing ya, i was never fast either, i said i was in the same race as those blokes back when i was a young fella, i never said i got anywhere near them,i just think some people carry on a bit and over analyze .... too much, thats all, and ya right ,if it makes em happy thats gotta be a good thing i suppose.

Warmers really depends on tires and what you're looking for. In my experience, Supercorsa SPs really don't like warmers. They get overheated waaay too fast. I cooked a set in 20 minutes, which is why I moved to SC2s. On my local track we have 6 hard braking zones which could be taken reasonably straight, so my front tire is up to temp after my outlap anyways. My rear tire is somewhat wiggly until a lap and a half, but after that it's like glue. I see the use for warmers for racing, but for trackdays it's not necessary. I guess there is more of an issue with harder carcass tires that otherwise would need more work to get up to temps (Dunlops for example), but Supercorsas really does not need warmers for trackdays in my experience.

I was quite reluctant to move up the tyre tree as it were, even when I got
used to running the warmers and the lap times had started to improve over the season, for exactly this reason.
I just spoke to a few of the quicker guys around the paddock who were known
to be cool with advice. They basically gave me some rough times for the circuits
we were running, and said "consistantly under this time and you will benefit with xxx tyres",
otherwise you wont keep them warm enough while riding.

Obviously riding styles and levels of aggression differ, but their recommendations were spot on when
taking carcass temps on return to the pits. Maybe I was too cautious overall,
but you dont bounce as well in your 50s, and panis aint cheap to mend.

At the other end of this warmer conversation are the guys who are in the slow
and inter groups who are running slicks with no warmers and are in the trailer
of shame every weekend, yet still dont learn that they maybe need a little
advice/common sense.

Jesus Fens how did you know my dick was small ? Put you right on a couple of other things ...you were racing in the 90's , Id allready retired from my sporting career by then, represented Australia 5 times, raced professionally for two Italian teams at world level for two years. Yes now currently racing the Pani at interstate A grade level and even did a round of ASBK . A podium at Mugello last year , I grew balls years ago, but thanks for the advice.
So you raced top level in Aus , you should know how deadly slicks are below operating temperatures . And how difficult to even maintain temps off warmers when ambient temps are low. To insinuate to other readers here, looking at improving their track experience, that they arent man enough because they think using warmers might be a good idea is ridiculous . A set of cheap arse warmers start at $300 bucks . About the same as an SC rear.
4-6 days, warmers would save 1 tire by mitigating heat cycles or cold tear. If you or the readers are on road tires in slower ride day groups , different story.

Ok everyone, so Pirelli actually got back to me with a response! Here is their direct statement;

When there is a window of 90 minutes or more without using the tires, just put the warmers on low or shut them off. But don't take the warmers off the tires.
Please follow the warmer directions once again when you are going to go back on the track, (80c for 50min).

Any time the window is smaller than 90 minutes just keep them hot on the warmer.

So, for the most part, theyre going to be on hot the entire track day. I'd have to double check but lunch might be the only time where they're hanging around over 90 mins.
