Trade my Panigale in for a Vespa?

Solid plan. I know the vespa was a joke but have you considered the 899 just in case they turns sour?

Well out of all the bikes in the world I'd say an 1199 is first, and an 899 is second. But this is a once in a lifetime trip, so I'm going with my first choice no matter what.

Though when I went to pick up my bike today at Newport Beach Ducati they had two SLs. HOLY ....... ....... ..... What a gorgeous bike. You have to see it in person to believe it. They seem to have painted it in a color that is absolutely impossible to reproduce with a camera or on a TV screen. It ....... glows!!!!

Oh yeah--about 160 miles on the bike today and all is well. I've got to keep it under six grand, which is so ....... hard. Will post pics of my pistons and sleeves soon.

Dennis.....This sounds like the best news we have heard in a long time form you!!!!

Amen to that, I hear so many things about the SL and the witchcraft that went into making it. It reminds me of the Patton Oswalt Fleur the Lis' attention to detail level.

Each part in the Ducati Panigale SL was lubricated in the tears of small Guatemalan child.

So AntiHero, what's the status of the bike?
Where are you supposed to take off for EU? Landing where?

Oh yeah! Awesome news Anti. Take care! And yeah, I saw the Superduperlegeeeeeera and the color is freaking out of this world. Everywhere you look on the bike screams refinement. Definitely that bike pushes forward the envelope in a big way! Take Care!

Hey guys--so I've put 600+ miles on the bike (hard to do while varying the revs and keeping 'er under 6k RPM) since Sat. and all seems well. Only thing that makes me think twice is occasionally the bike will idle at 2k RPM. It's happened about three times....once after starting it (hot). Can't remember if this is normal. Definitely a livable condition, so long as it doesn't mean it's going back to its old habits.

I'll put more miles on tomorrow, but it looks like we're going to be a go my friends.

:D

This is great news..... so do you have things booked for thr trip now???

Nope. Not booking anything for sure until I know the bike is 100%. Also waiting to hear back on a Euro warranty, too....

Thanks, HotIce. I'll check to see if they're doing the sleeves, too. If I could wait on parts perhaps I'd even go for ti Rods since the engine will be stripped down anyways.

Big jugs is right. Aren't the Panigale pistons the largest of any motorbike or car made? I recall the second largest were the Vipers....

The Suzuki Boulevard bragged about the having the largest pistons in any production car or bike. Those were only 112mm.

Boulevard M109r | 2012 | Cruiser | Road | Suzuki Motorcycles, Motorbikes & ATVs Australia

"Huge 112mm forged aluminum-alloy pistons. These are the largest reciprocating gasoline engine pistons being used in any mass production passenger car or motorcycle, while featuring race-proven design to reduce friction and inertialmass."

And the 1199 has 112mm pistons. But it's a safe bet that the Suzuki cruiser pistons have a deeper skirt and weigh more, so.............

Anti,

What's it going to cost to ship your bike and how long will it take?

I've received quotes as high as $4k. Shipping out of the US is a pain. I've even had a couple people in shipping tell me to find someone else, as private individuals shipping Hazmat is not just a simple and straightforward deal. Shipping from Canada is much easier. I've got a logistics guy at Ducati who is going to help now, so it should be a lot less of a headache. Still want to make sure the bike is 100%. Had a little bit of high idle (up to 2k rpm), but I think it's just standard 'high' idle and doesn't really hang very much. Going to hammer on her today and see what happens.

Try to go south... :)

Try to ship it from Brazil to Portugal.

Have you tried to get this quote?

I'd have to get to Brazil first. Riding a KLR through Central and South America wouldn't be too bad, but riding a Panigale would be the equivalent of having a neon hat that says, "ROB ME, I HAVE MONEY."

Ok, so the problem is back. High idle, coughing exhaust. After being completely reset, everything is fine. Then around 600 miles later the idle starts fluctuating, then it starts idling high and hanging at 3k RPM for a while before settling back down to 2k RPM. And the exhaust 'cough' is back.

Here's a video of the chuffing exhaust.

One thing is now certain: I will not be going around the world on THIS bike. Very bummed.

Good thing I got that extended warranty. But back to square one.

The sound alone would be enough! Nothing cheap ever sounded that good.
