Have you guys seen this before?

My bike was serviced less than 1000 miles ago and I recently topped the oil up with the same oil (according to the Ducati dealer) that was used for the service.

The bike had been stood for about a week but I've never seen this kind of two tone effect before. It looks like there are 2 types of oil that have separated.

I have taken the bike out, did about 40 miles and the oil looks normal again in the sight glass. Should I be concerned?

Hi yeh I wouldn't want that in mine, best to do the oil yourself from now on,cant trust dealers! id just change it to be safe probably a mineral and synthetic that would cause separation,or take it back to them!?

For all that oil and a filter costs I'd be tempted to drain and refill myself just to be sure.

If I saw that I would just change oil and filter. Peace of mind.

If you did not run the bike after you added the oil this is exactly what it would look like...fresh oil on top of slightly used oil. ;)

Thanks for the comments. I think Zaster is right as I checked the oil again this morning after my ride last night and it's looking normal again.

I had never seen this before despite topping the bike up regularly when I first got it. Maybe it's because the bike had been standing for a few days and the new oil had a chance to settle on top.

One of the engines I service takes 50 gallons of oil. We suck it out the drain with an electric pump. Then we reverse our hose and pump in oil right up through the bottom drain.

If the end user is looking over our shoulder, they freak when the see dirty black oil on the dip stick after we fill it back up. But once we run the engine it all mixes together and is fine.

2 ounces of dirty oil mixed with quarts of fresh oil is harmless in your Ducati. don't worry about it. Even a tiny amount of old oil can stain a dipstick or sight window, at least until the engine is ran. The bit were riders turn the wheel over to pump out the last drop of oil cracks me up. If your oil is so bad that every last bit needs to come out, then you need more frequent changes. No one ever mentions spinning the wheel around after filling to prime the filter and fill the pump back up..........

If it settles out again, after a good ride, then I'm worried. That's weird. Some oils can seperate, if it's two different types. But most automotive type oils mix fine.
