When the clutch is in place you can lock up that gear train thru the trans/brake. The idler is on a eccentric and needs to be put such there is equal lash between the idler and the other 2 gears. Leave it alone and when you change the pump retain the original gear and hopefully everything is still aligned. If the backlash between the pump gear and the pump drive gear on the idler is the same as before you disassembled everything should be ok. The seal that seals the transition from the outer cases oil feed to the rod feed in the crank should be changed every time that covers off IMHO.

If you don’t think Trump will try to plug this loophole or implement reciprocal tariffs, I’ve got some Melaniacoin to sell you. EU is planning to tariff US motorcycles so it’s only time… Also if that water pump is manufactured in China, it’s subject to tariff even if it passes through the EU
