I'm looking into buying a used 1199 S ABS within the next 2 weeks. 3 in SoCal. All between 1k-4k miles. One 2013 and two 2012. I got have an 848 and ~17k miles under my belt on that and another 20k on a 650R kawi. I've ridden the 1199 and 899, so I get how it feels and the pure power. I mainly commute and will do the canyons (and I totally get that the bike is overkill for what I'm doing).

Mechanically, recall, build, anything I should be specifically looking at? It will have the electronic suspension, anything I need to know about there or inspect? Anything you wish someone told you before buying?

Thanks,
Andrew

I would get the 2013 as many of the bugs seemed to have been worked out by then. The main issues have been leaking oil and nuts and bolts rattling loose. The leaking oil is easy to spot. Make sure the dealer goes over ALL the nuts and bolts for proper torque values.

Check for unsual smoke when reving while the engine is hot and at normal runing temp.. Also check for the burning/melting fairing on the right side.:D

Make sure it wasn't tracked or dropped and your all aces.

Most people cant beat on these, get scared and sell the first time their butt gets hot.

my bike has never been tracked i haven't had the time ever but whats the big deal if a bike was tracked ? isn't that what it was made for? and theres no real way of knowing if a bike was tracked besides tires

When there are so many bikes for sale that are babied.

Why buy one that was beat on for a while if given a choice?

Do track bikes last longer then ones rode on the street?

easy to tell, ask the guy.

if you track your bike the service schedule it get cut in half, this will tell you that if you track it you are using the bike more than the garage queen ones. There is a big differences between 1000 mile on the street and 1000 mile on the track

***if you buying a 1199 used MAKE SURE YOU GET THE AIR CONDITION package :D

There aren't to many folks on this forum that can flog a Pani to do it any serious harm on a track.
I'd rather have someone ride it the way it was meant to than to baby it.

A reputable dealer that wants you as a repeat customer should be enough to look out for you.

I agree not many will hit redline in 5th and 6th on a regular basis and not canyon carving or any street riding.

But its pretty easy to redline the piss out of it 1rst, 2nd, and 3rd

Zaster is right. I'm still trying to destroy mine, but having little success. :p

Mine took a bite out of me the other day :( lol found the tank a little to hard.

You have your bud up her in auburn with the 899, come up and ride mosquito ridge with us.

Your welcome brother anytime.

[its on pashnet]

Hi, I have a 2013 1199 ABS with 600 miles on it that I am interested in selling. It is perfect, not a scratch on it and has a number of tasteful upgrades. (corse front fender, 1199 R decals, red rim stripes, etc.. and 1.5 years of factory warranty remaining)
