I need to top my engine oil off and I scanned through my owners manuel and not quite sure I found the answer! I think my Dealership said 5w-40 But I see posts with guys doing 10w-50. Thanks!

My dealer put in Castrol Power RS Racing 4T SAE 10W-50

Its unavailable in the Usa...Maybe Canada too??

WHAT? You mean something is not obtainable in the all mighty US and AYE?

That's what the manual says, but I'm yet to see any Ducati dealer sell that oil.

That's what they put in our bikes down under..

ironically, I was just thinking to myself... Given the same grade of oil. ie sae 15-50.
What is the difference between Shell Helix Ultra and Shell Advance Ultra, other than price.

The advance ultra 4 is a top tier synthetic. According to the Shell technical department it is a group IV PAO base stock.

The helix ultra is supposed to be a Group III hydrocracked mineral oil.
Depending upon who one talks to like Castrol or a US supreme court judge, if it's actually a Group III, it's a real synthetic oil.
Mobil has argued to their detriment, that it's not a real synthetic, and only a highly modified mineral oil.

Both are very good:)
According to the recommendation in the owners manual, Ducati would rather one uses the top tier oil in our machines.

The price is a good guide as to the quality.

Cheers

I understand that someone has imported the 10w-40 grade Shell Advance Ultra 4 into the US, and they sell it online.

THanks for the info guys. So If I were to top off my engine oil with the wrong grade, would it .... everything up? Im at 330miles and the oil is riding the low bar in the tiny peep hole Ducati gave us

Pop into the dealer, they'll top it up for free. Mine did anyway.

That's what I would do. If you have 10W-40 or 10W-50 handy that will work as well since you are still in the break-in period.

Dealership is closed today and its 200miles away.... So I can't do that. So I guess I'll go with 10w-50. Oil is better than no oil i suppose!

Absolutely correct.
Some oil is better than none.

Now consider this.
The manual states that there is a total of 3.7 litres of oil capacity. But you wont get 3.7 litres in when you do an oil change. I think it's more like 3.5 litres.
Also it takes about 125 ml of oil to go from the bottom line to the top line at the sight glass.
If you are currently at the bottom line(cold) then you are actually only about 125 ml less than the ideal amount. Don't panic at this, but by all means attend to it ASAP.
Think of it this way if you're down 125 ml out of 3.7 litres then it's not going to be absolutely critical.

In terms of oil grade, a 10w-40, 10w-50, 15w-50 or 20w-50 is going to be fine to top up with.

again my 2 cents ams oil if money is an issue (feel its better then over the counter brands same price)

motul 300v if money is no object (even smells like bananas)

not really a huge difference in price maybe 5 bucks a qt or so

or you can go cheap with shell rotella t6 synthetic diesl however i dont want to open that topic again.
