What to expect when I take my 1199s to the track?

I'm want to take my 1199s to the track. Everything I've read/watch talks about one thing I don't understand. What does it mean "it takes commitment to go fast" For those that have done trackdays or even raced their 1199 AND other bikes, what did you find?

I'm no noob. Been riding and racing for over 35 years. I've raced modified Sportbikes (600 to 1000cc) all the way to a GP Yamaha TZ250. I currently track a 2018 Tuono Factory. At 60 I'm nowhere near as bold as I once was....

They are a hand full I think is what they mean. I rode my 1299 the other day after ridding my V4 SF and wow it’s much harder to ride as far as you had better be on your ..... Lol Its a very exciting bike to ride. Not near the same experience with the V4.

With your experience Bart you won't have any issues tracking your 1199, Will be different than your Tuono of course because of the bars etc but I'm sure you get that concept. To me commitment on tip in but once there quite stable, maybe that's what is meant by "it takes commitment to go fast".

i did a 1:40 at Barber on the pani in the HWT races. thought i was gonna die.
did a 1:41 on the SV650 in the last lap of a solo 20 race...

you have to wrestle the pani, be precise , there is not much room for error. the geometry is not exactly telepathic.

rode an S1000RR at a trackday there and it felt like cheating.

Thank you. That answer I can totally understand! Looks like I'll be keeping my Pani for the street and the Tuono for the track.

BMW have been trying to sell me an S1000RR for years and I've been on many of the demo tracks where you take your own bike and demo a sorted S1000RR for a couple of sessions and track your bike the rest. When I jump off the BMW I always say wow I've got to get one of these then when back on the Panigale (has been 959 and 1199) I just get the concept of the Pani, If I was racing and lap times were crucial then that would be different but for me a tracked Pani is a beautiful thing......

Interested to see how you get on. I am thinking of turning my 1199s into a track bike As don’t ride it much with the V4r.

Have bought a cheap set of replacement fairings and am thinking of some CNC frame sliders. Interested to know what you (and others) go with in terms of crash protection. Have read many posts in this forum on that topic and a bit of conflicting views.

I’ll be trying out my 1199s on the track in about a week. Will be comparing to my gsxr 750 that I’m super comfortable on

I use my 1199r for a dedicated track bike and I love it. Some of the other bikes I’ve had are a little easier to ride fast but not near as much fun. I honestly don’t think it’s hard to ride it just has so much toque you have to be smooth on the throttle.

"it takes commitment to go fast" - Reference to throttle, turn in etc. If you hesitate its going to be less forgiving. It was the same with my R1. The bike preformed at its best when I was not fighting the bike/trusting it. Every time I would come into a turn feeling I came in too fast the bike wouldn't be forgiving.

Rode my 1199R track bike for the first time yesterday , bloody amazing compared to the old 1098s .(which i still love)
Holds a line much less physical to keep it there, revs up quickly , likes to wheelie but I don't have wheelie control or abs all deleted as it has a race loom with the electric suspension also removed .Same DNA as the 1098 but the engine has such a different character .Cockpit is really small compared to 1098 you are really close to the bar and screen at tuck . Think this is going to be fun !

Track day yesterday on the 1199s. Some initial thoughts (1) did some sessions in sport and some in race mode. Found race gave much more feedback and was actually easier to handle than sport (2) bike was more than capable on the straight, Coming into and out of turns and in turns for my skill level (Was using a brand new supercorsa SP rear and pretty used front rosso (should have changed the front as would have made given more confidence and corner speed)); (3) tyre warmers were great and a must; (4) missed the local suspension guy earlier in the day but next time will get the sag set right and any other suspension settings he can work with on the fly; (5) GoPro mount was very useful to see where I was short shifting and braking too early (and level of traction control intervention).

Overall great day, was pretty sore but hey I am in my forties. Looking forward to getting back out there and continuing to improve technique and find more elusive lap time.
