Just over 1 week to go, can't wait....

WSBK Phillip Island: Large WSBK grid announced

The new era of World Superbike racing will kick off with 25 participants entered for the opening round of the 2014 season at Phillip Island, it has been confirmed.

A raft of technical and sporting regulation changes have been introduced for 2014 in an effort to cut costs, increase grid numbers and improve the show, including engine caps, the introduction of the stock-inspired EVO class and a new qualifying format.

In terms of grid numbers, the technical regulations have done their bit to improve in this area with 25 riders listed to compete at the Phillip Island opener in just over a week's time. Eliminating wild-card entries – of which there are none this year -, the grid is the largest seen for a WSBK curtain raiser since 2009 and improves upon the 19 full-time riders that started last year.

Much of this has been attributed to the introduction of the EVO class, which will see ten entrants at the opening round across Kawasaki, Ducati and BMW machinery, though the arrival of MV Agusta and Erik Buell Racing as new manufacturers means the 15-strong championship class has been bolstered too.

Absent from the Phillip Island entry list, however, is the prospective Alstare Bimota team. The EVO outfit, which is set to run Ayrton Badovini and Christian Iddon, is yet to pass homologation, though it was always expected to delay its debut until the second round at Aragon in April.

The new Tissot-Superpole format, meanwhile, will mirror that of MotoGP, where the top twenty riders from FP1, FP2 and FP3 will progress to Superpole. From here, the ten fastest riders will progress automatically to Superpole 2, with the 11th to 20th fastest riders participating in Superpole 1.

The fastest two riders in Superpole 1 will then join the remaining ten riders in Superpole 2 to contest pole position and the front four rows.

(Ha! Missed that!) In my opinion, if the coverage is remotely close to MotoGP, I'm completely cool with horrible spelling. I'm just happy to be able to see an entire season in real time/at will! BTW: $95.72 USD.

Man, that is an awesome grid! Lots of talent this year. Canepa should really be on the factory 1199, not the Evo. Really good racers in the Evo class though, so it should be an exciting race-within-a-race. Great past SBK racers coming back also with Scassa, Foret and Elias, also Barrier moving up from 2 STK championships.

I'll wager that Melandri on the Aprilia will give Sykes everything he can handle, should be exciting for sure - way better than MotoGP in any event!

oh man i am really looking forward to this!!! awesome mix of brands too!

thinking about cancelling my eurosportplayer.co.uk subscription, and getting the WSBK... but then i'd loose BSB...
i have the motogp pass already, well, we'll see how good the coverage will be.

Just an FYI to anyone interested in purchasing the SBK Video Pass, I sent an e-mail to WorldSBK inquiring about what races were covered in the pass, and this is the response I received:

"The live coverage should be as follows:

WSBK superpole on Saturday
All the races on Sunday

thank you for contacting us.

Kind Regards,"

So all of you fanatic Superstock 1000 (STK1000) followers such as myself now have a viable option for catching these races in addition to the WSBK races. Seems like a fantastic deal!

I'll wait and see how beIN Sports covers it (They're on my ATT U-Verse channel around 1660).
If it is the same as their web streaming from last year, no complaints here. I sooo enjoyed not having to watch commercials that would occasionally cut away to a race. :)
The horror of Fox Sports/Speed Channel now receding as a distant, unpleasant memory.........

Awh jeez I'm in... Sounds to good, its only a leisurely 15 hour drive from our town, it will well worth the trip just to hear the Pani at full noise....

Definitely there.

The weekend looks great, 23 Saturday and 27 Sunday.

Lets hope we don't see another debacle around tyres like the MotoGP last year.
