Great article, thanks for posting that Jeff! I'm surprised that Checa's bike didn't have the downshift blipper function, I thought pretty much all the top-level Superbikes had that by now. I'll bet this year's bike has it! ;)

that was a great article. Wow, I knew the Ducati was down on power, but I didn't realize just how drastic it was in WSBK trim. Sounds like this year is going to be a rough one.

Best article on 2013 yet ..

good to see the man himself blame Gobmeyers lack of Focus on the Pani for getting behind while chasing Moby Dick in GP.... Alstare has been furious about this... it took them like 3 weeks to have a new camshaft manufactured. With Suzuki, it was next week install... Corse wouldn' deliver new parts when the old ones hadn't gotten back at the factory.. months were lost..

and the electronics do have changed the game..

reportedly the Honda GP bikes carry 3 gyros that are fed into the algorythms at a cost of 40K per gyro.. that's a 120K shoebox...

Something else that should be considered here are the new engine cap and engine maintenance restrictions that will be imposed on teams for the 2014 season (total of 8 engines for the season, 6 for EVO - as opposed to the rumored 40 engines Aprilia was allocating to each rider last year).

Aprilia and Kawasaki were reportedly running over 230bhp and 240bhp respectively, which correlates with the high trap speeds we saw them produce throughout the season. However, these two manufacturers were also rumored to be using several engines per bike for each race weekend in order to achieve those numbers. Considering the Aprilia produces around 177bhp at the crank in stock trim, you can imagine what kind of tune they were having to run to get power in the 230+bhp range. Even with the stock ZX-10R producing right around 200bhp, a 40 hp jump is still fairly substantial. A good example of the extreme tunes these teams were using last year can be seen in the Moscow race where Sykes' bike loses power mid-corn before deciding to self-detonate.

What affects will this have on race results and end of season standings? We'll just have to wait and see, but it should help close the top end power gap between the high revving 4's and the Ducatis.

Duck41, I think you're right on. Just read an article describing how the kawa had 40hp on the 1199 in wsbk. Considering superstock result, and street bike Hp, where the 1199 kicks everyone's a**, kawa and aprilia must be pushing their tuning very hard. Hope you're prognostic pans out. We'll be in for an exciting season. Can't wait for this weekend!!!

We'll see soon enough, but after FP2 we have five different makes taking the top five spots on the timesheets (two of which had basically been written off as uncompetitive last year), and the top eight within half a second. Has the makings of a great season.

Good to see canepa on the evo bike at 6th

He has maintained a nice gap over the other EVOs throughout testing and is now nearly a full second ahead of the second fastest EVO thus far (BMW). The fact that he's doing that and mixing it up with the full spec bikes is pretty exciting.

guigliano ducati 1199r superpole # 2 !!! almost number 1 but guantoli took #1 and beat checa record

Giugliano very impressive qualifying 2nd on the grid, splitting the Aprilias! Both Guintoli and Giugliano were under Checa's prior lap record. Also impressive was Canepa qualifying 10th on the Evo. Davies 11th, but he had a big moment in the last sector on his flying lap, so that pretty much did him in, otherwise he would have been up there a little farther too. The races should be very interesting tomorrow!

beat me to it thanks

Very nice qualifying time for Giugliano! Unfortunately the same can't be said for Davies. You could see the frustration in his expression at the end. Getting beat out by the EVO bike is going to hurt his pride a little.

Canepa turns in six tenths ahead of the EVO crowd. Excellent!

A lot of good vibes coming from the commentators regarding the Panigale. Looking forward to the races tomorrow.

Looking good. Lets hope the tires last tomorrow. I also heard a comment about new rules limiting suspension cost. Right after Sykes crash. That may also be helping Ducati when the big bucks companies can't put very expensive parts on their bikes anymore. Fingers crossed.

Don't knock Chaz he's a phenomenal rider. Three different bike three seasons in a row. Managed to win on each of the first two. He's a Sunday guy. Always races better then he qualifies. Hell he even had a win on the triumph 675 at lemans. Taken away by running out of gas. Pretty much rolled over the superspott class in 09 or 10
