So, now there's talk about a new software update.

Does the new software update and 41t sprocket finally make this bike usable around town?

This is the best bike ever... I ride my in town and if I could I will be on it all day long!
I can not understand this kinda of people...

Try an hour and a half of stop and go traffic and tell me how she goes. My previous bike did ok, not great but acceptable

I don't have an 1199 yet, i'm just doing some research.

Supposedly the 899 is way better in the city but they really cheaped out in some unacceptable ways.. i mean no clearcoat on a $15K bike?

I commute from SF proper to the south bay (45 minutes to an hour in the morning, and an hour to hour and 15 minutes in the evening) and I don't seem to have a problem having a pleasant ride.

I guess it's all relative.

I can only speak to my experience.

My bike has standard gearing 15/39, and it's absolutely sublime to ride around town since the update.
Before the update, it was a pleasant ride. IMO.

Having said that, around town is not where the fun is.

Thanks for the input. What about it makes it not fun? I mean other than in the same way ANY bike is boring around town.

There is also some rumbling about the 899 being more fun because you can beat the .... out of it more, less horsepower so more time/opportunity to crack the throttle. What's been your experience with the 1199?

Too me, if most of my riding was around town then this bike has no point. It is meant for the track or turns. Slabing on this thing is not pleasant to me, but once in the turns 2nd gear or higher and it is just amazing.

I think it's a hard bike to justify if you don't track it, especially as it gets very hot around town and it's just not happy pottering around.

If you have your heart set on a Ducati I would consider the hypermotard or the 899 as by all accounts it seems to have much more real world power

Most of us have an 1199. It's 3 bikes in 1. I pushed my dry suspension settings to all maps. Technical twisties? Low or Sport mode. Sweepers or track? Race mode. Absolutely zero need for a 899 unless you buy it to race in a specific class. You can wind the ever-living .... out of a 1199 in low mode of you want to ride it like a 899.

I've owned a gixxer 750 and 1000. With the 41tT kit this bike is just as comfortable and ridable around town as those. By that I mean that putzing thru commuter traffic is not the point of any superbike but it's as livable as any other in terms of ridability. The only bad thing is the heat (what heat?) in stop and go traffic.

Have you test ridden one? Just basing your expectations from your post on this thread, I don't think you'll be happy with the 1199 or 899.

I used mine for commuting even during AZ summers and don't find it unpleasant. It's the most "pleasant" Ducati superbike I've had but if your coming for a Japanese bike, it's narrow focused and probably unpleasant.

Groan - Heres a thought: why not take a 1199 for a test ride around town and you decide (seen you dont actually own one yet) and enough of the damn update jeeze - if you actually own a 1199 take the damn thing into the shop and get them to plug it in and if it updates then great, if not; then it didnt need it. Personally I cant be arsed to find out and are happy with the way the bike is (in saying that it was tuned by Mr Tuneboy himself :D) Its a pig around town for me but again I dont ride it around town - it wasnt designed for that, I ride it the way it was meant to be ridden; on the track and wayyyyyyyy out of town in the twisties.

Better not buy one since you heard from the Burning Bush that you will be unhappy around town. These bike are not for the faint of hart.

My opinion: This bike sucks around town, designed for track yet sold for street use
My point: the other brands make better bikes for around town and still perform like mad at high speeds and on tracks whereas this thing only shines in high performance situations. Test ride around town, waste of time, ask to take an extended test ride where you can ride hard and fast with little or no stopping.
Still love this thing though::D
