1199 around town, 2014 edition

So I'm brand new here but this drives me crazy. I just picked up my 2014 Panigale 1199S from a 2011 GSXR 600. I read all the reviews etc saying how rough it is and how crazy it is to just cruise around on it. The engine is fantastic, and if you have any throttle control at all it's smooth as can be around town. What did anyone expect from a 1200 CC superbike? And why do people buy these to just ride around town. My first ride was a 4 hour commute back home after trading in my gixxer and it was just as comfortable on the way back as it was on the way there with the Suzuki. This bike is ....... incredible and I'm so happy I ignored all the reviews saying how difficult it is to ride or uncomfortable or whatever all the BS is. If you need to feel the wind on your ......, get a damn scooter, if you like to go 0-60 in under 3 seconds and over 100mph every time you go out than this bike is the ..... The seat is a little hard, the heat under the seat is a little hot, but if you actually like riding and accelerating and just murdering the pavement than ...... this thing is awesome.

About the 899 is faster than the 1199 on the 0-60 times, is there a test about that? I can not imagine that really because of the more grip the 1199 has etc...?!

43t on rear (stock) on the 899 as opposed to the 39t on the 1199. I can believe it's quicker through the first few gears. Not surprsing given the gearing and similar engine characteristics (massively oversquare twin).

Really? Scooters have better airflow for that? Or is this just an indulgence ins some juvenile (and sexist) metaphor.

Just curious. ;)

Well, If you'll notice the seating position on a scooter, I would say it's quite obvious the air flow to the ...... is much better than on the Panigale. And I've read that a ...... is a requirement for buying a scooter over a motorcycle :D

It's winter here, man Im glad for all the heat! Thinking of taking the heatshield off to give me more warmth, actually.

+1. Mine has been fine. No heat problems at all. It's WAAAY cooler than a 998. I don't ride mine in the city, that's what my DRZ400 is for.

My throttle works fine as well.

But my seat is useless. I can't brake at all without losing my balls. I'm sending the seat back to the idiots at Ducati with a few choice words and putting the race seat on. Stompgrips to follow. Has a single person at the factory even ridden an 1199?????

Pegs are pathetic. Put on some CNC pegs and am much better.

When I do get into a little country town and sit in traffic, the engine deos sing a different song. Barking out it's unhappiness. I can't say I've ever experienced a more personable engine ever. It's amusing when it growls at passers by.

Fueling/throttle control has been quite good for me. Nothing like the kind of adjustments I had to make with my '10 Multistrada 1200S, which surged and bucked. The '14 1199R presumably has the latest tune update from Ducati.

Same problem with the seat. The stock seat is a slippery ...... Came around a corner a bit hot the other night and a stater was rolling the other way with his lights on. A squeeze of the brakes and I racked myself. Had tears in my eyes for the next 15 minutes. I've got the "touring" seat, which has much better grip, but I but don't like what it does to the relationship between seat and bar height. Hate to spring for the "racing" seat too.

As for Stompgrips, I'm short - 5'8" with a 29" inseam. So where the hell do I mount Stompgrips such that I have a platform to squeeze between my legs?! My knees are pretty much where the subframe bolts to the head. I'm having a hard time adapting to that.

I'm planning on mounting grippy pegs (only) to the stock rear sets for the time being. Otherwise, I love the bike.

Highly recommend the gilles pegs, super grippy and gives eccentric adjustability to help grip the tank, made the stomp grips perfect

I think he means the 41 tooth rear sprocket option.

The Termi's will help a little as well;)

I didn't do any of the gearing changes so I can't speak to those, but the termis and upmap made a world of difference in my bike.

Hmm... I'm gonna have to give this some thought. I hadn't considered moving the pegs closer to the tank. Wonder if my aging legs can handle the increased knee angle... Haha! Thanks!

Try an hour and a half of stop and go traffic and tell me how she goes. My previous bike did ok, not great but acceptable

I don't have an 1199 yet, i'm just doing some research.

Supposedly the 899 is way better in the city but they really cheaped out in some unacceptable ways.. i mean no clearcoat on a $15K bike?

What was your previous bike, so we have some context here?

I didn't know there was stop and go when you're on a motorcycle.

I think this is where its different between which state you live in. In California we can share lanes and go in between lanes. I think this is where opinions differ because some have to sit in the lane and some don't. I could be wrong.

I have about 7,500 miles on my S and I commute with it every day from South Bay to Sunnyvale. I use a custom Sport mode (less comp. and reb. for the CA roads). The only change from the stock bike is the "soft" seat which I will highly recommend; My S is more comfortable than my '02 VFR and absolutely best ride (for me!) on commuting, mountain roads even rain!

Which tires are you running considering that it is a commuter?

Went with the OEM 899 seat and my bike became an instant Goldwing. Just turned 50, 2 herniated discs and severe hip arthrosis and will put many GS owners to bed on my Pani. Minus the square saddlebags:rolleyes:

If you want comfort around town but still own a kick ... superbike. Here's one solution. Sell the lights, mirror, tail from the Panigale, that'll get you a used scooter and pair of capri pants for around town. Don't abuse the Panigale in stop and go traffic, that bike is not build for it. You need to set it free, stretch its legs.[/QUOTEI

I think some of us know what he is talking about. My bike is not used to go to Starbucks. But to get to the twisty's I have to gon on the highway and some city driving. It's not the comfort or the heat. I should be able to hole a speed and not have it jerking and bucking!?? It is perfect on acceleration.
