If I could afford it, it would never be started. Just a showroom piece with red velvet rope around it and a sign by it saying "If you touch, you die!"

It does seem this bike would present a bit of a conundrum. It's not something you'd want to ride on the street, and yet it is also not something you'd want to risk damaging on the track.

=Starbucks.....:D

Yeup - putt up the road, have 5 coffees over 4 hours and smile at everyone drooling over my wanking machine cos I can :) F**k yeah - if I could I would! Then I would go for a ride on my R heh heh

If I could afford it there would be race plastics going on it immediately and it would never touch anything but race track for the rest of its miserable life while I thrashed the living hell out of it at every trackday or club race I could get to.

Exactly my sentiments.
Besides there's no Starbucks here in OZ. So that counts that out as well:(

Hell. I can't ride the S to within 80% of it's fullest potential.
That's why I passed on the SL.

Good point & we shall ultimately see, but 1 second is an eternity on the track.....

Not really. If the track record is around 2 minutes, 1 second is less than 1% faster.

The point is that the SL is disproportionately priced for any possible performance advantage over an R. It is PURELY a revenue generating exercise to separate the wealthy die-hard Ducati owner from their large disposable income. I don't blame them for it, they've been doing it for years and it keeps them alive to make the bikes I can afford.

IMHO the Desmosedici was a similar tactic but represented so much more as a performance machine. That bike had a tangible connection to the MotoGP machine, and no other manufacturer since has come close to releasing a machine for sale so closely related to their MotoGP program. The SL is, in blunt terms, a tarted-up version of an existing model - big difference from the Desmo.

3 SLs have been sold in the state of Washington, there is one that has a better chance of being ON the race track, than not!
Just hope I am there when it happens.......

I'm sure a few will end up on track maybe not as permanent track day hacks but certainly will be given a run out every so often.

You just need to look at the 1098r's they were $45k and most ended up on on track so price does not necessarily reflect how the owner will use them or not in some cases

Yeah, Motocorsa days at PIR have frequently had multiple Desmo's in attendance over the past few years. I think folks out in the NW just seem to appreciate getting tacktime when they can!

Of the 4 SL's we sold at our store, 1 is going to be a dedicated RACE bike and 1 will be taken to track days regularly.

"Thats why I passed on the SL"

what frogshit

I suppose it had nothing to do with the fact it was $85k out here in Aus.

Give me a break. Perhaps I just missed the joke

I had no idea Warren Buffet was a motorcyclist! And a Ducati fan at that!

It's good to hear some will be seeing action, although I do cringe at the prospect of any SL being used as a dedicated race bike - it's certain to see hard times at some point. I think light duty recreational track use and garage queen would be the ideal roles for a high performance, limited edition model such as this, but I'm looking forward to hearing about how they fair on the circuit.

Do you really expect the same rider to be any faster on an SL than an R? I bet Troy Bayliss would be hard pressed to find a performance difference.

I am actually not certain of what to expect, although if anyone were able to take advantage of the performance differences, it would likely be riders of the Bayliss skill level. Based on reviewing the specs alone, I believe the same rider would be prone to be faster on the SL (assuming they could muster up the courage to push it), but to what degree is really the key question.

The only real indication we have of the SL's performance thus far is the Mugello time of 1'54.9 that Ducati test rider, Allesandro Valia , achieved on it. Just for comparison, Bayliss and Hayden both achieved times of 1'51.3 and 1'51.2 respectively at this track while testing the WSBK Panigale. I'm not sure what kind of times the standard R could achieve at this circuit, but perhaps Kope or someone else with this information could chime in.

We clearly have a different sense of humour.

And $85K is also not a joke.
As I have previously stated here on this forum, I also firmly believe the bike is worth every penny.
