I broke in my 1199 base in as per the manual with only a handfull of excemptions after 800km's. The rear Pirelli is completely finished after just 1409km, no burnouts no track days just running in on my local twisties::(
I weight 109kg and have increase front and rear preload to acceptable handling levels...Front sag 37mm rear 25mm

My 07 R1 managed at least 2300km with normal riding and a track day thrown in the mix.

Has anyone else experienced the same? Are the Pirelli's really soft or is the bike prone to this? Or should I be looking at the suspension settings, in particular spring rates?

Ok, wow, this is a weird one.
Maybe you haul-ass more than you think you do ?

I weigh slightly more than you (yeah.. I know).. but I've got 2400klm on my tyres and they still have lots of life left in them by the looks of things.. I'm expecting 4000+ klm.

What pressures are you running?
I'm running 36/38.

I'll double check tonight, but yeah that is normal cold pressure. Can't believe you have almost double km's and still life in it. My front tire has no issues, smooth normal wear..

You must be simply riding the balls off the bike,
or S.A has some extra corse-chip asphalt ?

Or both?

What pressures are you running on the street? Perhaps too soft? The pani owner's manual lists two pressures, one for smooth roads and one for bumpy roads the bumpy road one is roughly 32-35 front psi

Attached is from the owners manual

I'm at 2k miles two track days and still have a ton of tread left, I suspect I'll get at least 4k miles out of them.

Josh brings up the biggest point. What kills your tires faster than anything else on the street is your combo of front/rear pressure combined with ashpalt type. If you have a lot of chip-seal type asphalt where you ride then your tires are bound to get shredded a lot faster. Chip-seal is the worst thing for motorcycle tires regardless of how hard you are riding; it just destroys them.

I live in Washington state and had 3500 miles on my tires + 1 track day and probably could have gotten another 1000-1500 out of the tire before absolutely having to change it.

I am in Southern California, ride all twisties and got 3200miles out of the first set. 875 seems ridiculously low... Although I expect to get much less on the second set because 1000miles was running the bike in.

These Pirelli's are super soft and stick really well. I only have about 500 miles on my 1199 and they are wearing well, but I dont expect more than about 2000 miles out of them. I only ride twisties and ride pretty agressively, so I am okay with that. On my 1198 I only got 1900 miles out of it before the rear 190/55 Supercorsa was toast, it was completely bald. I run 30 psi in the back and 31 in the front. Im sure the way Ducati looks at it is if you can afford a 25K bike like the 1199 than you can afford new Pirelli's every couple thousand miles..

This is what it looks like after 1409km. The road defnitely has some corse-chip asphalt...and I'll lower the pressure on the next new tire to see what the effect is...but this was during the break in

Holy balls !
WTF?
SOMETHING is going on here…. Are you hauling-ass off every stop light? I just can't see any other explanation .

No, running in mostly less than 6000rpm for first 1000km and now 7000-8000rpm...not sure how much longer I can take it???

Very few stop and starts, as we live in the country side...mostly twisties;)

I am NOT an expert on tire wear; but that is NOT normal tire wear; at least not tire wear that I have ever seen on a road bike in 20+ years of riding. It looks like a track bike that's either torn a cold tire or run under load with poorly dialled in suspension settings.
It would appear the rubber is tearing, which could be a function of tire pressure, suspension settings and tire and road temperatures.
Because of break-in, I showed little wear during the first 1,500 miles; but by 3,000 miles both the front and back were done. The front tire was in need of rubber on the shoulders and the rear tire was in need of rubber in the middle (yet had 1/4 of inch chicken strips on either side).
Now, to put this in perspective, I ride the same roads (no track time yet), on the same tires (except he runs a 190), at the same pace as my buddy on his 1198 SP every weekend and he is only getting 1,000 miles out of his rear tire, which I think is a function of how the engine puts out more torque at lower RPM and thus one tends to subject the tire to far greater forces than the 1199 when riding even at a very fast pace on public roads.
Now that my bike is fully broken in, I expect to get about 1,500 miles to a rear tire and no more than 2,500 miles out of a front. (All fast road riding on twisty B-roads and some twisty A-roads.)

I've done 4,300km and I've ridden reasonably fast over some extended stints. (200-400km) and although the rear looked well scrubbed in after a longish run at very high speed (asphalt chip road) but seemed ok again after riding back in town after on smooth roads. Reckon there's a couple of thousand at least left in it.

Man that tyre looks terrible. It looks like a faulty tyre,it appears to be coming apart in layers. Could you have ridden through any chemicals or acids? Either way that tyre is FUBAR. Is the front one the same? You will soon know with your replacement tyre if its the road surface or not. But i would say it is something else.

Front is still good, so I don't think it was chemicals or acid.

I also checked the pressures cold: Front 230kPa and Rear 240kPa (34.8psi)

700 miles and counting, running it in as per the manual, and fortunately, this was just a flesh wound!

Plenty tread left, and most roads were twisty!

No such luck, had a huge hole in the dead center of my rear tyre at the weekend. It was so big I barely managed to plug it to get the bike home. It had done 3000 miles to this point and the tyre still had life in it. It had done two track days too. Zoenal, there must be something wrong with the tyre or your bike to do that to a tyre during run-in. Rear wheel alignment or maybe serious under inflation?

That looks like a faulty tire, or just way too much weight on the back. Maybe your rear pressure is too low, the tire got bent out of shape. Unfortunately, the factory warranty specifically states tires and wheels are not covered.
