By the way, who is your local SoCal dealer? Enquiring minds want to know. Sorry, if I'm not very PC.

Well I'm guessing here but, I'll bet it's Pro Italia until I here different. (Just from my own personal past experience).

All you PC puss's can take a hike.

3. Termi slip-ons

This is freaking ridiculous! Termi slips are being offered as incentive to buy this bike this season at some dealerships in the nation. Bad on them. The deal should be new bike and Termis just to make it correct. Termis are a tax right off for these dealerships.

My experience: Bought a new Beetle last fall. Test drove the car, looked it over, signed the paperwork and drove away with the car. Upon stopping 30mins later noticed the car had been hit by another vehicle in the front quarter panel. Didn't noticed since it was raining hard when we got into the car. The car had been struck while we were signing for the car by an employee that didn't fess up. After the manager saw the damage he said take your pick of the other Beetles on the lot and even offered to order an exact replacement. Long story short, I got an upgraded Beetle for the wrong doing. And yes all the paperwork was completed the day of the accident, and they still made it right!

As stated earlier, it's not a cheap motorcycle, it's a freaking Ducati!!!

During the last phone conversation I had with the dealership, they did ask if I was interested in a 2013 Tricolore that they currently have in stock. I know it's been sitting there for quite some time - at least 2 months.

He was curious if I'd be willing to work something out for the Tricolore. Didn't go into too much detail with him about it, because....Unfortunately, I'm not wild about the paint scheme on the Tricolore.

A bit too busy for my personal taste. To each his own, right?

A Panigale R? That might be a different story...but no matter how much of a discount I could get on an R, I'm assuming there'd be some difference to make up. And I don't feel like spending any more...

P.S. The dealership in question is NOT Pro Italia. I will refrain from disclosing the dealership's name until this whole mess is settled. Then I will either smash them or simply tell you who it is.

push for the R. you might just get it.

Your first choice was right with the S. You know it was right on the inside.
Your rationale and instincts served you well.

I totally agree with your assessment of the tri colour scheme.
It's too lairy and busy, and it doesn't flow.
IMO the nicest tri DUCATI has put together was the 1098.

The R is certainly something to behold and the package is respectable at all levels.
But it won't be as good of a ride as the S is for most/or all of what you are likely to be doing with it in actual reality, and you may live to regret the choice. Really.
It also only gets you bragging rights at Starbucks or with the unitiated (and they don't really count) unless you want to get into their pants;) But you can still do that with the S.
Unfortunately unless you can ride it to something like it's fullest potential, you also run the risk of looking like a try-hard, and truely serious riders will be shaking their heads.
Until you actually see someone like Troy Bayliss ride an S in testing to what is arguably it's fullest potential like I saw a little while ago(unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable:eek:). Then you realize your nagging suspicions that are in your head about your abilities while riding the S to 1/3rd of its potential are absolutely correct.

The S is priced correctly, right in the middle of the line up.
It has all the goodies, and then some. So depreciation is much less of a factor. A problem with all DUCATI's.
And it will be more than adequate for 99.999% of us.

The other thing to consider is that, in taking them up on a deal on the R you are starting to move slightly towards the position of taking advantage of the dealer just a little. Unless his floor plan requires it to be shifted out the door;)

By all means think about the R, but in summary it's much better suited to a roll of being a very serious track day weapon. Actually even the S is more than adequate for track days. That's the reality of what you're dealing with.
Maybe get an R at a later date for track days after you have honed your skills on an S to the point where you feel that the S is the limiting factor in your pursuits.

Cheers

i agree in theory with all of this, but in practice pressing for the R is definitely the move. Neither R nor S will be used to anywhere near their limits. But the R has the full exhaust, the windshield and the superior resale value. And aesthetically, I prefer the exposed aluminum.

On the street they're all beyond overkill.

PS i also agree the 1098S Tricolore was the most tasteful iteration: i used to have one...

We keep this up, we'll get to the dealership in question soon enough simply by process of elimination!! ;)

In any case, spoke to the sales manager today. I told him that I want a new 2013 red 1199S - plain and simple - and I don't mind waiting a bit.

He tells me that all parties involved are stuck between a rock and hard place on this one. And that, at this point in time, he needs to get the owner of the dealership involved. The owner is away and will be returning on Tuesday.

I closed with telling him that I'm open to discussion on the matter. Switch/swap/upgrade to a different bike/model? Simply refund my money and I'll go elsewhere? It's all still on the table.

Until then, I'm in a holding pattern...I'll just have to wait and see what the owner has to say about this whole ordeal...

pull your money and you'll get the R. good luck either way.

I'm going to say, to me this is the best S vs. R comparison so far, right on the money.... well done, Brad.

Be professional about it but be firm about a new one or your money back! Also call Ducati north America and get them up to speed about this ordeal then follow up with the owner/salesman about switching to a new bike. Panigale S's are flooded in dealers anyway if it takes 2 weeks go to another dealer and damand compensation for this inconveniece

How it goes after Tuesday will be a good indicator of how good this dealer will be to deal with on servicing and potential future warranty claims.
This has worked to your advantage now as it's the ultimate litmus test to gauge their professionalism.
All is good:)

I recommend using this experience over the next week wisely.
Oh and I would be very quietly poking around in the background to gauge other dealers suitability to get your money, and potentially establish a good relationship with.

At the end of the day, your not just buying a bike, "your also buying THE dealer";)

Cheers

Glad you are sticking to your guns. Good for you.

VERY intriguing update...

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the dealership owner will be out of town until Tuesday. So nothing can really happen until then.

HOWEVER, the sales manager (not the owner) I've been dealing with all this time, just sent me an email. In it, he states "Think 1199R."

No more details. Not sure if they're going to want a tad more of my money for the R. Or if they're thinking of hooking me straight up for all my troubles. Who knows?

We'll have to wait and see...more updates to come.

And again, I really appreciate everyone's input.
