14 front /41 rear sprockets?

I just went to 14 / 41 and I absolutely love it! acceleration is really smooth and quick! Motor def spins up faster! Power wheelies from hard acceleration are even more common. and most important to me, being able to take 90 degree turns in second gear easily! I also have a flashed and remapped ecu from redline with an mwr filter. The bike is even more of a beast! I was worried about the gearing being to short, but If I am shifting more I don't even notice it!

i m running 15/42 and about perfect... should even get better with the improvement low down we're aiming for... and perhaps go back to 15/41 if it gives more then we expect...

Well I went from 15/39 to 15/41 and I like it but I am considering going 14/41...wheelie monster???

I'm considering 15/41 as I am a low speed canyon rider and I'd rather be in 2nd all the time even on tight switchbacks. Reading this I'm now even considering a 15/42. What are your thoughts on the 15/41 for low speed, is it enought for what I'm looking for? I can't say I'm tempted to go 14/41, I really don't want to fight weelies. But would love more info from anybody who has ridden both 15/41 and 15/42. From SFTricolore sounds like 15/41 might be the best. But I'm also probably running at lower speeds than most as it is really nearly ALL tight canyons or low speed commute.

15/41 is a really good mix.... I am slightly different from you.. I ride with S1000's and I am looking for more ooomph out of the turns... I going to try 15/42 not 14/41... For you I think 15/41 will give you a much smoother easier time in the tight turns ..I don't think acceleration is your main concern...

Correct, I accelerate for nothing but thrill, not tracking it. I'm just trying to get my RPMs up to be able to stay in 2nd even at very low speeds. And of course, I am in no way close hitting or interested in top speeds.

I know, then why do I have the bike, well that is an entirely different issue and should suffice to say because it is bad ass and I don't care. :)

Thanks Steve.

Lets look at this even closer....What would you estimate you speed range is when riding in this situation??

if we take 3500 as a baseline Rpm ie.. you dont wanna be any lower then the following applies

15/39 2nd gear gives you 31mph thru to 95mph
15/41 2nd gear gives you 29mph thru to 90mph
15/42 2nd gear gives you 28mph thru to 88mph

The differences do not appear huge but on the street the higher gearing will definitely help you...

.

Impossible unless you call 80-90 very slow speeds.

The bike does 100mph at the top of second stock. Which is already slow compared to most liter bikes.

Bone stock I only need to drop to 1rst on switchbacks.

Your bets bet is the 15/41, 14t is too drastic, and if you don't like the 39, you wont be happy with the 42 either.

25-50 depending on the corner, some of these are 120 degree switchbacks. Maybe even 20 if nervous about the condition or occupancy of a blind turn. Obviously I'm speaking of the tightest ones. Average lowest speed in a normal corner more of a range of 40-70. Having to go into 1st on these tight ones is quite jerky. I hate being in 1st on this bike trying to maintain a steady speed.

Commuting is 30mph roads all the way, so nothing more than 100mph. ;)

I added to my post...please review it again... :)

Well, I should say, RPMs up from where they are, still talking low RPMs at these low speeds, really talking about modest change at that speed. But I think you may be right on the 41. I'm curious, you say if I don't like 39 I won't like 42 either. Why is that? 42 just too short?

There is no slow on 14/42 ... :)

I have it and it pulls hard, really hard . Third is sweeter in that combo ..

Hi,

I will make the change to 15/41. Do I need to remove the front sprocket in order to remove the chain?

Thanx!

don't go down on the front. it causes more wear and stress on the chain. its better to go up in the rear and leave the front sprocket alone. you will get more life out of your chain. now my question this. With the stock gearing it feels like the front ALWAYS wants to lift under high speed acceleration. Wont it be even worse with a larger rear?? Ill be honest. This bike under wide open acceleration from 2nd gear up scares the hell out of me. Lol. It feels like the front is NEVER on the ground. and im basically ....... that gas tank trying to keep her front down.

Not sure how much truth there is to it, but my dealer recommended changing out the front sprocket at the same time so as not to have uneaven wear on the sprockets (I have about 3000 miles on mine). Maybe be just crap selling me stuff, but you never know, the additional cost is not that great.

He is yanking your chain (no pun intended) in 3000 miles there is no meaningful wear on your sprocket..he just wants your money...don't do it...
