The front sprocket is new, so there no need to replace it, my question was rather if it is necessary to remove the front sprocket in order to be able to remove the chain? Sometimes it's quite tight in front of the sprocket.

Removal of the chain isn't necessary unless you are changing it?? I added 2 links to mine when I did the 41T "upgrade" so it was not removed...

He is yanking your chain (no pun intended) in 3000 miles there is no meaningful wear on your sprocket..he just wants your money...don't do it...

I'd generally agree, but it's like an extra $45.

I will change the chain, so that's why I'm asking.

Ok... Then do this.... Link the new chain to the old and thread it through the front sprocket then disconnect again...this will save you time/hassle etc...

Unfortunately the new chain (used 1 day by a friend) is already connected. So reading between the lines in your post, I need to remove the front sprocket :(

Finally got a chance to take the 14 tooth front off my R. Replaced it with the stock 15 tooth option. IMHO she feels "right" now, not so hyper (if she can ever be accused of not being that!) 1st isn't way short anymore.

Going to run her through the mountains this weekend and see how she feels there.

Side note: The process of making the front sprocket change (going up a tooth) without popping a link was an excercize in patience. Man is this bike compact!

I have a 14/41 on mine.....and am contemplating going back to a 15 front. 15/41 is just about perfect.

this is what i am considering when i change my sprockets next month! how much of a difference did you see just by going up 2 in the rear only? thanks in advance!

The R comes with the 15/41 stock, so never tried the base/S gearing. Was trying the 14, and didn't like how short it made her feel. I guess Ducati got it just about right on the stock R configuration. Highly recommend.

i really like my stock gearing for my florida riding. i may just go up one in the rear and call it a day just to get a tiny bit more out of her.
