Just out of interest....Out of these 2 bikes which would you choose?? and why??? I know there are others to add to the mix...but please just these 2 :)

Yamaha. A lot simpler to live with, a lot cheaper, and performance difference is very incremental.

R1M. Easy.

Reasons:
Cross plane (engine braking, character and sound).
semi active Ohlins.
forged magnesium wheels.
carbon everything.
It's not the boring modern day GIXXER the BMW is in my opinion.
Limited production/exclusivity.
More like a Ducati than the BMW is.
Looks like a transformer but a transformer is more childish than the fugly BMW.
Fits me better than the BMW.
Not a Single reason I'd choose the BMW over the R1M.

That said, I'd have a harder time choosing if an Aprilia RSV4 RF was thrown into this mix ;)

BMW. I've had two already, and they're great bikes to live with everyday. If I could only have one bike, it'd be an S1000RR. You can get luggage for it, and actually start going long distances. It's smoothness around town makes it a superb commuter bike. And when you need to wake up, it can accelerate like nobody's business. My '12 S1000RR was the yardstick against which I measured my 1299S. When I'd remapped the 1299 and it was finally definitively faster, I knew I was where I needed to be power-wise. I haven't ridden the '15 S1000RR but I doubt it's slow.

The R1M is a bit too focused, like the Panigale, and for a focused sport bike, it's Ducati or nothing for me.

It's being able to own multiple bikes that has allowed me to rationally purchase a 1299S.

For some reason, I'd say you're leaning towards a bmw so you can quit getting burned by your buds in a straight line on their bmw's lol.

Based on looks alone, although I don't like the tiny little lights on the yamaha, I still like the overall look better than the bmw. Mannnn, that's a tough call between just those 2 bikes.

I thought they were cast magnesium.

R1M … many favourable reviews on its effortless handling and seamless electronics that are not as invasive to the rider as the other bikes …

R1M

Better electronics. Easier to use and control
Easier bike to ride.
Its a crossplane
Cast Magnesium Wheels

R1M.

The BMW is boring like all BMWs. It feels heavy, handling isn't razor sharp like the R1, never been impressed by them, it does everything and has every bit of tech on it, it can but it doesn't stand out of do anything that well other than go like stink. I have two at the shop here and looking at it and the details and finish of the bike, its just disappointing and laughable that people call it the best superbike on the market.
It's subframe is nasty and looks like it came straight off a Hyosung, has sachs suspension and it doesn't even have proper floating front rotors. Just reeks of cheap and cost cutting corners.

No thanks.

R1 also....but I'm an R1 fanboy from the past. Like others said, they just have more character. And Yamaha support there product well.

yamaha. because every now and then, you have to take a hit on an ugly one.

R1M.

on the balance I'd have to concur, especially about BMWs being boring. but it's out of doing everything well and without any special character.

it's also built to a price point, even if the components do work well together, but that's no different than Ducati base models. The Sachs suspension is mediocre at best, but I also found the difference between 1299 and 1299S to be dramatic, which is largely based on the suspensions.

I always found BMW rotors to be an interesting decision. It's based on the logic that Eric Buell uses with his front brake. I'd even bet that the improved leverage by mounting the disc halfway down the spoke rather than attached to the hub as is the norm, is why everyone praises BMW brakes. They may not even work better in terms of stopping distances but they certainly feel different.

BMW really ought to have offered a model that was a middle ground between the S1000RR and HP4, with comparable componentry to an S model Ducati (read Ohlins and monobloc Brembos). But in the end, BMW Motorrad does their own thing in a manner that makes sense best if you're German I suppose.

In any event, it says enough that while I had been extremely devoted to the BMW brand and their bikes long before the S1000RR appeared, they also essentially drove me away by failing to appeal to the best aspects of motorcycling.

Riding an S1000RR is like having ... with a supermodel, but with a 12 gauge rubber condom. You know you're doing it, but....

Whereas with a Ducati, you feel everything intimately, for better or for worse. That's life. And I discovered that I prefer my bikes to be alive, which explains why I own what I now own.

I agree with everything except for this. It would have been a waste of money for them to offer a 3rd model or a in between as you call it. For what you get with the 15 s1000rr now. No point at all.

My buddy has a s1k and we switch back and forth quite often just for kicks.

I got a chance to ride the new r1 and I loved it and would definitely pick that over the bimmer. Like evreyone said its a awesome bike but it's just another i4.

Tough choice....I would go for...yamaha. It seems to be the new favorite track bike here locally.

R1M

But ask yourself what do you want from a bike? If its skin peeling speed, easy street riding comfort get the BMW. The BMW does just about everything well (a good all around bike), If you want a sexier and good handling bike get the R1M.

Reasons why I would get the R1M over the BMW:
1) The dash and shift light is so out dated on the BMW.
2) They only made 250 R1M's.
3) R1M Looks better than the BMW
4) Handling
5) R1 electronics

Having said that, the BMW is still a better bike than the R1 IMHO but I still would get the R1M over the BMW because the BMW is like having a .... with a killer body and butt ugly face.

I test drove the 2015 S100RR, 2015 R1 and R1M all are great bikes and elected to trade my 1199 in for a 1299S.

Of course it will be different from people to people, but I think this reason may hold true for me.

If I was sold on the BMW S1000RR enough to spend my money vs something else...I would of bought one already or made the switch after Panigale, especially as they made other "upgrades."

But I did not. As BMW upgraded their bikes, so did other manufacturers so it wasn't a big change. I thought HP4 was pretty cool but still didn't think it was worth it.

So, having said that...if I had to pick between the two, new R1 and R1M be the pick I go with. I think its fresh and it can only get more upgrades from now and will be an interesting "new" bike.

I rode around BMW S1000RR when I took the California Superbike School so I do have little bit of seat time.

S1000RR. The new 2015 is absolutely bonkers. I was given the chance to ride it with Power Commander and Arrow Shorty, after riding mine before I had the Panigale...and the smoothness of it, the instant power throughout the RPMs, and just how scary fast it was. It is also very comfortable. In 22 months I had 13000 miles on my S1000RR, all while having a Harley that I put 10000 miles on in the last 12 of the 22. Heated grips are also a big thing, made the bike easy to ride even in winter time. It was a last minute decision to get the 2014 Panigale vs the 2015 S1000RR, and if I had to do it again...

I'd stick with the Ducati, sell the Harley, and get the S1000RR :)

I would be over the R1M also...

Been on a few S1000RR's and beside the power they just feel bland.. The R1 that I rode was far more connected to me as a rider, and was pretty damn good!

Personally waiting for the new ZX-10R, as it should up the game a whole new level for the I4's. Just hoping the designers do not take inspiration from preying mantis, stingrays, or whatever creature, like they have over the last 8 years.
