Yep the issue exactly. The V4SF's transfer heat from head/rear header thru the subframe (which is more massive then the Pani's) into tail of the tank, which has been preheated by the bit around the airbox. The seat sits on the subframe and the tail of the tank. Part of the Rade improvement is the material. Everybody bitched about the plastic tanks but if they had used plastic instead of aluminum the heat transfer to the rider would be lower.
Only problem with plastic is that it ages quicker than metal under heat. But it is a better heat insulator.

Ducati should have decreased tank size to be half-3/4 the volume and therefore drop the tank height and position it so it’s more in the colder part of the V instead of hanging over the headers. Then make the rear subframe/body from CFRP and have it extend over the header portion for its insulation properties.

Put the battery under the seat and use the batteries vacated volume as fuel space, widen the tank at the front. Should be able to get the same volume, weight is transferred forward and you can have an air gap under the rider.

If performance is the goal then don’t you want the fuel low rather than up above the engine?

They'd still need to leave the stub of the underseat bit of the tank for the fuel pump. Then the battery (and you'd have to use lithium on the non-S) would be directly under the seat. Lay it on its side. Air gap above between it and the seat and a heat shield beneath the battery above the rear header.

I would imagine they’ve packaged things the way they have for good reasons though. Obviously ultimate performance without compromise isn’t something you get in a retail product.

The weight of fuel diminishes over time and I assumed you would want most of it positioned where it cannot influence handling as weight diminishes.

Honestly, I don’t really find any issues with heat but I’m not sitting in traffic or riding on the road at all.

This to the OP...did the dealer set rear preload for you? Wondering if there's a table or something simlpe to help guide how to set rear preload.
I didn’t change anything—it was completely bone stock. I just wanted to put some miles on it to get to the first service. My plan was to take it to the track at Chuckawalla Dec 21 and 22, really push the bike, figure out what needed adjusting, and then work with a suspension specialist at the track. But the impression I got from everyone at the dealer was that no one really had much experience or knowledge about this bike because it’s so new.

That said, I’m a pretty average-height and weight guy, and the suspension felt solid for the six days I rode it. Of course, I didn’t push it too hard—kept it under 7,500 RPM and didn’t go over 110 mph in sixth gear since I was still in the break-in period.

Now, the electronic suspension settings? Those are overwhelming. The third-gen Öhlins has so many adjustments available, it’s going to take a lot of trial and error—tweaking, reading the manual, and riding—to figure it all out. That is, if I ever get the bike back. It’s been in the shop for 13 days now. In California, I can force a buy-back at 30 days. We’ll see.
 
I had M1000RR before V4, 14000km and need anew engine (serviced everty 3000km at dealer and they void warranty. And there is lot of M with engine stucked. S1000RR maybe little better.
Wow I've seen a couple of engine broken but bmw was claiming a wrong breakin period and track use. How have you been using yours? I know also the 1st new gens of s1000rr had a big issue with the camshafts if i m correct that they had to halt production to fix it.

Perfect break in, oil changes at 3000km. All services at BMW. Zero trackdays, only road use sometimes bit faster. After engine blown up they taken it to apart, find damaged in third cyl and start thinking how to void warranty. One day its "tuned in factory, then You have tuned bike, if i ask how then no answer. M models had too many engine problems. Youtube is quite full of these. Not Bmw fan anymore. Small problems they fixed by warranty, but if its something bigger not anymore.

Well that's scary. Did you manage tk get it fixed under the warranty? How did it end up

I’m leaning in this direction myself. Arrow also has something like this coming out in Feb. it’s my understanding that each will have an upmap. But not sure if these eliminate the cat. If so, they won’t be street legal and may open up the dash to evo modes, etc. will have to wait a bit and see.

Today I hit 600 miles and the check engine light came on immediately at 600 miles. No issues with rear brakes. Have booked service. Hope to track it soon.
