Aftermarket Parts. How much have you spent and on what?

Now that the build debacle is over it brings up a good question which is, did the company you bought your bike from deliver what you wanted. A decent way to access that would be to look at what you spent on changing your bike to better suit your liking. I found the SL argument interesting. I only know 3 SL owners and all of them pumped a decent amount of money into the bikes despite the fact that they were significantly upgraded by the factory. Interested from a potential marketing perspective what is being spent.

Aftermarket parts - $60 for a way overpriced carbon tank protector. Does it count as aftermarket if it's "Ducati Performance"?

Did the company I bought my bike from deliver what I wanted? - Considering the service department has had my 2017 Anniversario longer than I have... Not sure.

So we have a difference of opinion on some things around here sure but I have to be honest it's a no, I have no after market parts on My 2015 R.

However, hear me out, this is the interesting bit. I went to an authorised Ohlins dealer a while back to get my machine set up for me in terms of use and weight/height etc. Suspension was to be revalved and sprung etc as required.

What was actually pulled out of my front fork tubes and the state of them, both oil and springs, was quite disappointing, they really were a mess. These mass produced units from Japan, or so I was told, are still not quite the same standard as if you went to Ohlins and bought the same spec R suspension off of the shelf from them directly.

So I guess I don't have aftermarket parts replacing 'Ducati Ohlins' parts with Ohlins parts (!). But I can see your point about the quality of Ducati items vs. Third party producers or else there just wouldn't be a market for them.

About $15k. Absolutely no intentions on improving the bike since it is already a great platform. I can't outride the bike in stock form and i have 1 inch chicken strips as it sits. Why mod? Because the transformation is much more rewarding than the end result. For me, the fun is all about seeing the different stages the bike goes through. As it sits, I'm kind of bored with it. Want to redo the decals but can't find a place that can do what I'm asking. The suspension mods were just for the hell of it, the exhaust was just for sound and could care less about the weight savings and the wheels were for looks and only looks. Again, who cares about the weight savings. If someone 3 years ago gave me my current bikes duplicate at less than what it cost me, I wouldn't buy it. Takes the fun of modding away for me. I plan on doing a few small cosmetic changes but definitely done spending big money on it. If a V4 is coming in 2018, knowing that ducati makes some sexy lookin superbikes, I'll probably add one to the stable. I dont see myself parting ways with the 1199....unless it gets stolen or totaled.

+1. This bike is a work of art. 99% of the people in the forum do not use it as a race bike. Having said that the mods I have made I cannot justify to anyone else but myself. I pay my taxes and work hard, you gotta have a passion.

Interesting Question

I find aftermarket parts to be a HIGHLY subjective and personal thing.

Some guys modify for looks, while some focus more on performance, so depending on your objective, I find it interesting to see what others do.

For me personally, I focus more on performance vs looks. So, I remove all the evap canister, cats & I always put on a tune and exhaust and then figure out what I want to do from there.

For my SL after I put on the race kit, I used Gecko's front signals, some titanium fasteners, removed the factor rear tail kit & created my own plate holder minus the light.

I usually change the rear sets too, but I really like the SL's for stock, so I really didn't change that much.

Now for my Superduke, I changed a ton. New exhaust & tune, removed evap canister, tidy tail, rear sets, triple tree, brake pads, grips, re-did the wheels & tires, new mirrors and a bunch of carbon.

It took all that to get the bike to exactly what I wanted... But I love it now.

Having spent way, way too much on mods for the bike including to the frame and swing arm (not just bolt on parts) the time invested is probably the most costly element here. I spent almost 14 months building the bike up from just an engine. Now that I am switching over to the 1299, the process begins again, only this time many of the parts will transfer across and I'm much more confident at stripping the new bike down to it's core, as I transform it into what I want/need. The next few weeks will involve reverting the SPS back to a stock S for resale.

Its all relative and subjective to alot of different considerations

Eg:

Ive brought my DP rearsets second hand for $450USD and installed them myself.

Some people may have brought them full retail and had to pay somebody to install them.....

Is this just going to be another e-peen thread?

Not much but the 1299S doesn't need much to start with... So far :
  • ASV F3 Shorty levers
  • Throttle Spacer Kit
  • OEM Carbon Fiber Clutch Cover Protector
  • Anti-Glare (matte finish) Anti-Scratch Dashboard Screen Protector
  • Seat Cover Carbon Fiber (using the OEM plastic one to mount my GoPro on)

The next and probably last upgrade I plan on doing is a full Akrapovič Titanium Racing Exhaust System.

LOL Nope. Its just an interesting psychological perspective. Kind of like eating. I eat at home, I eat what the wife makes. I eat at at a traditional restaurant, I have a choice of prepared meals. I eat at buffet, I eat exactly what I want and in what ratios and how much. Its a much more efficient and satisfactory model. Thats how i view bikes, building bikes and aftermarket parts. If there were that option for consumers you would always get the bike you wanted with the parts you wanted and no left over parts to sell on ebay for a fraction of the cost. Someday.

Sadly over here if the European Union get their way custom bikes in any form other than coming from a factory or parts fitted by factory will soon be a thing of the past.

I had to fend for myself at an early age. Raced BMX in the mid to late 70s. No involvement from my dad. I learned to build my own wheels at 11 as that was the only way I was going to get anything.I have been in the "build it your self" club ever since. My neighbor bought a $4500.00 road bicycle last week. He then preceded to change the wheels and the parts group to an upgraded Sram group to the tune of 2800 bucks. They had the very frame set, wheels and Sram group in parts at the same shop. The parts he removed now sit in a box in the garage. I sit dumbfounded. And he did the work himself. This .... baffles me.

Haven't spent much yet. The Akra's were part of the Annis package. I've only cleaned up the tail with the NRC kit so far. Most my mods will be aimed towards easily switching back and forth between track and street. CNC rearsets are on this winters must do list. I'm used to running a GP shift pattern and I'm having to think too much with the standard pattern. The only other money I've spent so far was with Barry at GP Suspension for my initial baseline setup. We'll see how she runs on the track before I decide if there's anything else I'll want. Oh yeah, that Full Six carbon subframe keeps calling me.....just because ;)

PS: I started wrenching when I was in kindergarten. I took the training wheels of my bicycle by myself. The first mod I ever did lol.

Ha ha.

There is of course the 'official cost' of mods that the minister of finances has approved and the 'unofficial' costs of purchase with out the approved sanctions.

I'm still trying to convince the same minister that front exit Termis are a necessity, she's not buying it at the moment, and hence, neither am I.

This line is amazing!

I'm patiently waiting for you to chime in on this one Wallaroo, I think your're the first guy I know that has started his mods without the bike yet.:D

Lol...I am just quietly sitting here MotoGPing it.....I havent finished yet, so no good me putting anything up.

When you have been buying Ducati's since the 70's it is not hard to know what you want, it is just doing the homework on what parts are out there:D
