Aprilia bikes can be just as finicky as ducati a. Currently two owners on my Facebook of rsv4's are have electrical issues one so bad he wants to cut his losses and sell.

I had a 2003 RSV and the electrical problems were a pain in the ass.. shorted out once and the battery was constantly draining - had to keep it on a charger if i wasn't going to ride it constantly..

even had fear of gassing up since sometimes it wouldn't start again
 
Since being purchased by Piaggio things at Aprilia have gotten way better..Parts supply and quality wise... Not perfect by any means but much more acceptable... Resale unfortunately seems to still reflect that history...

The one bike I'm speaking of is a brand new 2012. I'm not an ape hater though, can't wait to see the 2014 just saying dumping a duc for a more reliable ape makes zero sense to me

Well we know there are Friday afternoon bikes from every manufacturer.... based purely on reliability I agree its probably not a good reason alone... But if there are other factors involved then the reverse also applies... "lack" of reliability is not a reason not to buy... If that's not too twisted way of explaining ...:)

The RSV4 is an awesome bike. It handles very well a little down on "Power" against the Pani and s1000RR/HP4 if power is your thing but hey its still fast as hell and more than 95% of riders capable of riding. The only 2 thing I didn't like is that its too compact/cramped for anyone over 5'10" and felt a little top heavy (well everything is top heavy compared to the 1199. The electronics is good and the sound is awesome too. Im seriously thinking about buying one in the near term too just for canyon carving. If I were to choose between the two the Pani would be the one for me and then the RSV4 factory. Third up with the HP4/S100RR even though its an awesome bike I still can get pass the looks.

Hi Guys,

On a topic that has been beaten to death. I have looked, read, and watched all the reviews between the two. I have yet to test ride the RSV4, and I have been waiting on good weather here in the Midwest to head to a dealer to ride one. Unfortunately, there is none here in Indiana.

I want to hear from my fellow Ducati owners on what you guys think.

Compared with a standard Pani it is lacking power. I added a link where you can see the difference on the straight. My Pani vs RSV4 from 6:40 mins

I have been contemplating on getting the RSV4 over my 1199 Tricolore and one thing that I just saw that's not talked about a lot is resale value.

Looking at panigales on flea bay, where they are mostly cheaper than any classifieds anywhere, the values are holding up from last year.

RSV4s though, unless it's the Factory SE, is devaluating like Japanese bikes.
 
I very nearly bought the 2012 factory ARPC Aprillia over my 1199S.

At the time the Panigale was brand new and an unknown. I knew I would want to take it on track but the 1199 was too loud for trackday noise testing (102db) and had problems getting a stock model through. If I couldn't track it, I wouldn't of bought it! Since then people relaxed a bit about them and admitted their testing methods weren't great so I could track it.

But before I rode off on my 1199, I took an Aprillia out and gave it a 'good' ;) test ride. As a small ish guy (5'7" 70 kgs) I liked the fact it was a small bike, short wheel base and reasonably light. I also found it quite flattering to ride, the electronics were good with plenty of pull right through the gears. If you don't care about '0.5 of a second in it' like me, I would take one of these over the Beemer any day. A damn good bike in it's own right.

If I'm honest, I took the 1199 over it as I previously had an 848 and was hooked on V-Twins, the sound and the looks. If you're not worried about the prestige, then you won't be dissapointed by the Aprillia. But don't expect the same torque as the 1199. I mean it's good......... but not sh*t your pants good...... it's just not got the same grin factor.

Oh, don't worry about the pipe, I done some homework when I was looking and if you don't like the pipe you can get a GP-2 system/can and this looks mental and sounds better!!.

I have both and love each. You cannot go wrong with either. The sound of the V4 is intoxicating(I have a Leo Vince GP 3/4 system) and it feels more like a 600 than a liter bike. It is very forgiving to ride and has plenty of power.

The RSV4 was my second choice. Very enjoyable to ride with loads of character. The aesthetics are somewhat dull in comparison to the Panigale and there is a noticeable power gap between the two (favoring the 1199), but you really can't go wrong with either bike.
 
I had a '10 RSV4R and honestly I miss it. I like the electronics package in the pani, but I'm not one where money is no object. Bang for the buck, I plan on going back to the Aprilia whenever I decide to sell this one. And I probably would have purchased another RSV4 to replace my other, but I would rather wait until they come out with next gen. But sound, feel, intangibles, and the smoothness of the V4, I loved it. Also, parts were a breeze through AF1.
 
I had a 2010 rsv4 factory chopped it for the 1199, loads of problems with valve seats/valve materials too hard, And head to block alignment,problems at 5-6 k miles, if it starts using oil get rid of it!! I know of 3 others personally with this fault, my mate had new heads and on warranty then the same happened again,aprillia said no warranty wtf!!,awsome bike but never another unless they prove this problem has been addressed!

I think it's human nature to want what you don't have, meaning that if you had the aprilia first you would want the duke.
 
That's a tough one. I think most people would ride faster on the Aprilia to be honest than they can on the Pani. It's way more user friendly and less demanding. As mentioned...it's not for taller riders.I'm 5'10 and don't think I'd want to be any taller on it. At my height it is more comfortable than the Pani.Everyone says it's down on power compared to the Pani, but that's a spec sheet thing cause very few can use all the power on either bike anyhow. The Aprilia power is easier to use and put down...so dyno sheets are only a piece of the puzzle. The Pani has more character and gets the blood boiling a bit more even with all it's faults. The whole parts thing for Aprilia is not as bad as made out to be on this bike.AF1 are awesome to deal with and seem to always have everything and an answer.
It's a win win. If you can sell your Pani and not lose your shirt to try somethin different and new..then why not. If you do though...don't be surprised if you end up longing for the Pani again at some point...I did..not necessarily cause it's better but because it's a ducati and the soul stirring thing is what it's about for me.

Like most I had the choice, I got a good deal on my 13 used with 1000 miles on Pani, but this recurring fork problem is starting to get me and realize that I can get for a few thou more this factory model, I still get that feeling riding the pani but I am not so sure I would buy it again, I'm also not sold on the Ducati back up I have issues with that dealer network etc. I think the BMW is ugly front, back, sides, up or down the Aprilla is not and is a great bike.
I must admit I bought the Pani because it had the Ducati badge not because it was the best bike, its the same with my 749, hot, hard as hell to ride under 60, just wants to fall over, most 600s would kick its ass but nobody gives a .... for a Jap 600
