Aprilia RSV4R Factory versus 1199

If the dash-ecu (my third one) is finally fixed (for good) before the warranty runs dry, then I would have no regrets with the 1199. BUT, if it continues to be an issue, then I am trading it in for something just as exotic, but with a dealer close by and a little more sane for the road (well sort of).. a KTM 1290 SuperDuke R (currently a prototype; but expected as a 2014 model).
It’ll be powered by a version of the current RC8 R engine, it uses a single-sided swingarm, has an interesting exhaust set-up, with two pipes coming out at different locations, and a whole host of bling bits scattered liberally around the body.

Yep... That bike will be interesting to see.... But I do find KTM just too funky..

stw - just go and ride it and see if it stirs your soul. . . The RSV4 factory is a great bike and everyone who has one has really enjoyed it. Someone on here as a KTM RC8 (transnone ??) so if you're interested in that - PM him. .

The RSV4 has a killer exhaust note with the right exhaust and looks killer as well. There are very few v4's out there and is the second best v4 out there (though I doubt you would want to undertake the best v4 :). But seriously, test ride it and decide for yourself. You won't get an unbiased opinion on here.

I've waited 6 months for my white panigale to get in and now that it has I'm having second thoughts. Is the 1199 really that hard to live with? I plan on logging 10k miles a year on her but all the issues I'm hearing is kinda pushing me towards the ape/ bmw :/.....it'll be my only bike but yeah I'm on the fence.

Some posters are a little soft. My Tri has been nothing but perfect so far (850 mi) I dont notice the heat, as my 996R takes the cake for that and I guess i am just used to the fire-crotch feeling of Ducs. I had a 2001 RSVR (twin) and it was nice, but just not a Duc. I for one, like, the "not so user friendly" Duc SBK experience, if you want to chill while riding they have a Diavel for that. Otherwise, IMHO 1199 Panagale is awesome.

Ok... so if your dash craps out.. again and again... some guys are on their 4th... How will you feel?? Or am I just soft??

The "soft" comment was aimed at the copious amount of people complaining about heat, if you are on your 4th dash i would sue the dealer, Ducati USA and Ducati S.p.a. and they will respond. Mention that your are a big influencer on the boards and at Ducati events. I bet they try and satisfy you.

You got a lemon, i would be pissed, but i would be agressive about fixing the prob.

I am not on my 4th dash... But If you read my thoughts and the reason for this thread you will see that my concerns are driven by Ducatis apparent failure to solve the dash issues... As far as being a big influencer on forums.. all I can say Lol...

I didn't read through every post here so don't flame me if it was already brought up but the Aprilia has the plastic tank issues just like the 1*98 bikes. Tanks are made by the same company just as is KTM's tanks. So plan on tank swelling problems.

Not since 2010... IIRC

I have nothing to add I am just commenting here because the forum is unreadable now from the spam.

Hello friends!

Rode both today - I currently have a 2013 S1000RR with all the trimmings. I really want the Panigale for various reasons and it's the best fit for me ergonomically out of the three. However, the RSV4 really surprised me. Kind of like a mixture of the other two - the smoothness of the BMW but with some of the Ducati character. Plus it's way cheaper than the Pani. I think I'll end up on an Italian bike but I'm really not sure which one now  All I know is there is no real bad choice of the three.

I still haven't test ridden the rsv4 but I feel if I get the bmw I'm compromising, the panigale is the bike that stirs by soul so to speak. I'm concerned with all the small issues. soft paint, screens frying. the bike being difficult to ride and having hyper sensitive steering. I guess what I'm getting at is I'm worried ill have buyers remourse after the honeymoon phase wears off.

I know screens are an issue for some ( a lot maybe) mine has fogged for a few minutes couple of times.
Yes I think the paint is a bit soft. So I am careful cleaning it.
My bike is not difficult to ride. I find it quite easy. It steers accurately.

A friend recently rode it and I rode his speed triple. He did not want to give my bike back and I could not wait to get my bike back.

I bought this bike without even being able to sit on one as I paid my deposit in November 11 after seeing it at a Motorcycle Show.

I hate these posts where people ask what bike to buy. Buy a Japanese bike if you want something will all the bugs ironed out.

A Ducati is a motorcycle for an enthusiast who takes the good with the bad.

This is your view... I personally think this attitude is old fashioned and may well have been a reasonable point of view 20 yrs ago...But now in the 21st century I think it more than fair to expect our $20k+ bikes to be well made and reliable..

The dash failure isn't a " bug"... Its a recurrent and highly dangerous failure..

Ducatis failure to solve this issue is very disappointing.. and having seen my previous Duc have very similar issues its hard to have faith they ever will... I for one refuse to be put in a position where I may be faced with having to pay for a new dash once the bike is out of warranty...

wow....you are kind of condemning the bike rather than just riding it and enjoying it. Just put some silicone fish tank sealant around the dash seams and it should be good to go. It's pretty minor really....look at BMW...that bike needs a electronically imposed rev limiter during break in so the engine won't blow.....IMO a much bigger concern.

My zx10 had a recall to reinforce a weak crank case that could crack and leak oil. Again more of a concern than a dash fog. The mv agusta also has foggy dash. Any electronic display can .....

Not at all... The 1199 is a brilliant bike... I am just expressing my heartfelt concerns about this issue... and how on earth does silicone sealant (which I would never do anyway) solve my right indicator failure??

I personally don't find the bike difficult to ride, but i think it's difficult to ride "well" at the extreme end of the performance spectrum.
