Hey guys new owner of a 1299 from Australia.Rode my new bike 280ks from my ducati dealer and got home and noticed the chain had been rubbing on the swingarm it was that loose stripping the powder coat off, rung the dealer and they said that's not right bring it in but I live 280ks away so I said I'd get it tightend at the local bike shop and bring it in on first service so got it tightend all good, rode maybe 180ks through good twisty roads through the mountains and it's stretched again only noticed when got home,so got the chain tightend again until first service.Ok service at ducati dealers done swingarm touched up brand new RK 520 chain put on after the had the bike for 6hrs all seems good until rode to the gym and back stretched again after 5ks thought to myself what is going on sent an email to ducati australia today not happy at all just wondering of its happened to anyone else?? I've owned a 1098 and a diavel before this bike and havn't had a problem.

This was a known issue on the 1199 in a few cases. Have you considered the possibility that your swing arm may be mis-aligned or there is a problem with your rear geometry. I would consider getting a more in depth check carried out.

Thanks for your input mate it could be the problem I don't know that's why I took the bike to the dealer,6hrs for a service and sort the problem out change the swingarm even they had one there.its a bit depressing I've owned 7 bikes and none have had a problem.

Have you changed the drive ratio (sprocket sizes) or chain (to a 520)? Misalignment need only be a fraction off to cause this problem or even chain tension. I would ask them to check the stock distance between the rear plates on the chain and the swing arm at it's closest point on another 1299, as a comparison against yours or perhaps other 1299 owners can chime in with figures, so you get an average, which will help you determine if your bike is out of limits. Armed with this info you can then approach the dealer to force the issue and get a replacement arm/chain fitted again under warranty.

Yeah OK great info thanks I can ask them in the morning the mechanic may have not checked all avenues I'm hoping it's sorted soon I've got the wsbk to ride to in a month.cheers mate

do they run a 520 on the 1299 ?

If you've got a 525 on there and you are running stock sprockets, I would get your dealer to check for any end float on the swingarm or that the retaining pivot bolts have been torqued up correctly. This was a recall on earlier 1199s. It may well be that yours is out of true or that it is sitting too proud and allowing the chain to come into contact. Also check that the upper chain slider is not loose at the inboard end of the swing arm, as this will influence the chain's proximity to it.

Ok thanks for your help got some possibilities to tell them what could be the problem very strange what's happening but I'll get it sorted.✊

I just had my swing arm replaced under warranty because my chain was rubbing on the swing arm as well (2015 1299).

Hey Joe that's what I told them to start with the mechanism inside the swingarm isn't holding the tension but I'm no expert, they should have tried all avenues.

Hey Fletcherharvey,

Just wanted to find out if you got this resolved?

Cheers
Chris

Hey Joe that's what I told them to start with the mechanism inside the swingarm isn't holding the tension but I'm no expert, they should have tried all avenues.

The only reason you chain will lose tension is if it has a) stretched or b) the eccentric hub has rotated. If the latter, then it is possible that the hub pinch bolts were not torqued correctly or there is a defect that is allowing it to rotate within the swingarm casting. This should be evident when they remove it as there may be witness marks on the eccentric hub. Not entirely sure this is the cause. I still maintain there is likely an issue with the mounting points/swingarm pivot bolts.

Hey guys just q quick question if anyone else's chain does this on the 1299. My chain matches the 40-42mm distance between the bottom of the swingarm and the centreline of the chain with no downward pressure applied (as per user manual suggests). But when LIFTING the chain, it actually touches the plastic guide on the underside of the swingarm... is this normal for the pani or should i be worried?

Thanks Steveo. Yeh just got a reply from the Ducati dealer, the mechanic said its fine for the chain to touch the plastic guide under the swingarm at a stand still. Once the bike's moving, the suspension comes into play and supposedly won't touch the guide.
