Im new to the Ducati world and my 1299 just hit over 600 miles and its asking for the Oil Service. I passed by my dealer where I bought the bike and asked for a quote and he said $400 Labor and about $100 in parts. I was blown away. I am used to changing my own oil and my last (Non-Italian) bikes. I figured I would take it to the dealership because I see a lot of used Ducati's claiming that they have records of all Services performed. My question is...

1. Is the average Oil Change really $500
2. Does it really make a difference for resell to have the records?
3. Does anyone here perform their own Oil change? If so how to you clear the oil service message?

Thanks in Advance!!

$500 for an oil change?!?!!

Never EVER go back to that dealership again.
If you were local, I'd do it for a beer.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a decent how-to someone on here has posted. If you've done oil changes on your other bikes, you'll have no problems.

Just keep your own records if you're concerned about resale, that should be good enough for any potential buyer.

EDIT: Found the oil change post, courtesy of AntiHero:

In Australia its $500 for a oil change I did my own plus filter kept receipts. Will be going to the dealer for valve service though.

Oil was on special at $79 (supercheap auto) silkolene red bottle full synthetic 10w-40

Oil filter was $40

Some people are vary concerned and would only buy a ducati if it has all the servicing done by a dealer.

Since you're local, feel free to stop by and I'll help you change it. Just buy the oil, oem filter, o ring and crush washer. Should cost about $90-$100 max with motul 300v oil. 15w-50. An hour or two if we're shootin the .... and you'll be all set.

I'm by culver city.

But how do you reset the light? And his bike is at the first service so would need to have rpm unlocked.

you dont reset the light unless you want to go to the dealer and pay 50 bucks. keep your recipets and note the oil change.

just to be safe change it once a year or when necessary. you dont need motul (i love motul) but only use it in the track bike.

go to amazon get 10w40 or 10w 50 castrol racing 4t. 6 qts are 45 bucks shipped and you will have 2 qts left for your next change. k and n filter is about 15 bucks vs ducati filter which is 35. i can hook you up with that. crush washer and gaskets 5 bucks and you are good to go.

you save so much money feel free to give the dealer 50 bucks to reset your light if it bothers you that much

Way to high for an oil change but what the dealer is quoting you is for your break in service. There is an extensive list of items to check. Get a hold of a shop manual and go over those items yourself if you don't want to pay.

twisted is right thats first service not just an oil change. you pay for the privledge of them looking over your bike.

another thing you can do is take your stuff to the dealer and have them do it. bring 4 qts of oil the filter and the crush washers and gaskets they will charge you 30 min rate or like 65 bucks

tuneboy can reset the light i think

Yep Tuneboy can reset your service light but also voids the warranty. There's a thread on here on building your own diagnostic tool that can do the reset for you but not sure how it affects your warranty.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. I will dont see me spending $500 for an oil change plus some checklist. I am more than able to change my own oil but that Oil Service light will drive me crazy. Also this is the first I'm hearing about the RPM Lock. I am going to check out Superbike Corse in Laguna Hills, but worse case I will do it myself and live with the light.

Thanks again everyone, Great Forum!

Hell, I go to dealerships that .... you and they "only" get around $200 for an oil change.

Remember:

1. You don't need $20/quart motul. The stuff does the same thing as Castrol 4t you can get for $7 a quart
2. You don't need the dealer to do it to keep your warranty unaffected
3. Doing your oil change yourself is the only way to get peace of mind knowing it was done right.
4. You can buy gaskets, crush washers, and filters from supporting vendors on this forum for a good discount. Amazon sells correct oil for $45 a case of 6.

The first service is an oil change they pad the bill an additional $300. I literally watched them do one for me and they didn't do any of the "checking" they scammed me $300 more to do.

Best of luck!

I wouldn't be running cheap .... oil in a bike designed for full ester synthetic.

Also why run a cheap .... filter when that is critical for the engine life.

There .... mechanics just change oil, look over nothing and charge 500
I would become a Ducati Cry baby at this point
Glad i am technician

My panigale had its first service at a well known high reputation Italian dealership, all they did is reset the service light and nothing else.

When I changed the oil and filter it was as black as the ace of spades even when I had a r1 using semi synthetic would never get that black.

If for some reason you do go to the dealer for an oil change, go on a Tuesday when they open (most motorcycle shops are closed on Monday). They can get you in and out quicker which will lower labor cost. And, don't take it to the dealer that quoted you $500. My dealer in Dallas quoted $400 and I ended up paying around $350. But everybody is correct, it's a glorified oil change, easy enough to do on your own.

You obviously know zero about certification processes for oil. The oil I was referring to is rated the same or better as the $20 ..... Hate to burst your bubble but if you spend $15,$20,$25 for a bottle of oil you clearly have unlimited money so good for you but you're throwing it away with zero benefit. That .... oil you refer to has given me 20,000 miles of trouble free (oil related at least) riding
