Did I BREAK it when I BROKE it IN?

So who's got the tally and are the numbers telling us anything yet? For those that answered c to Q1, what was their actual break-in method. Don't see how you could really "break it in" unless it was dyno break-in or on the track.

B,B (added 1qt at 300mi, after that G2G),C (engine at 219F and 90F ambient). Never heard any supporting facts, but my dealer's top wrench said Ducati broke all these motors in on a dyno for QC (engine only, nothing attached) during assembly. That's common in factory race teams, but not for production bikes. I don't believe anyway since my imprecise butt-dyno said they bike came together and pulled harder after around 600mi.

Break-in "rules" are just legal CYA BS though. You can start raping the bike from mile one if you want. If that wasn't the case, how could you break in a built race motor on a dedicated trackbike aside from a handful of miles on the dyno? Nobody babies those.

The one bike I babied during breakin was the only one to blow blue smoke and burn oil at 4K mi.

I remember back in the day 1993...One of my friends bought a Ford Cobra and took it straight to the track with under 200 miles on it, punished it all day. Put nitrous on it and took it to the track the weekend after next and ran it with 500'ish miles....and he had that car a long time, and it was always fast....

So I dont know what is the best way. I know i'd rather listen to someone more qualified than me who presents a logical reason why or why not....and I have heard both. I have friends that swear by the hard break in. And the dealer who tells me not to.

But like anything else, with a 20k+ bike, I will error on the side of caution, and I broke it in per manufacturer. I do wish I would have done dyno numbers before and after though. I really do wonder the true answer to this.

1. A
2. B
3. C (AFTER I had the canister removed, it was totally "A" before)

After 4500 miles...

1) A - followed the break in as close to the T as I could
2) C - have not seen any leaks or they are so small and hidden I can't find them
3) C - maybe once...

Dont have mine yet (3 weeks and counting whew) but as with all of my bikes it will be C,C,C - never "run in" or "Break in" a bike yet and never had any issues with all the bikes I have owned (cant remember but somewhere in the region of 15+ now - I am 53 and started riding at 9) always supported the " Get the rings to the top of the cylinder right from go and it will wear the pistons better" that came from a bloke I met when I was 12 who raced drag cars so always have lol. In fact never had any valve issues either go figure :)

I reckon an early oil and filter change is probably more important. Get the grinding paste out early is no harm.

1) A
2) C (never leaked. Burned a bit during break in but not a bit of oil lost after ~2500 mi)
3) C (never. canister removed at first service but had no problems before it).

Currently 8,000 miles and counting

(oh yeah, obligatory) BASE IS BEST

We only speak leprechaun for the tourists to get them to part with the cash :D

That's not right. I remember having a conversation at IOM with the great Joey D. (RIP) and I only understood about every 4th word he said. I just kept nodding my head to keep him talking. :)

CCC...

Burned/used oil badly though never smoked for the first maybe 3000 miles..then just like magic it settled down and burns/uses zero now.... I was really worried I screwed up in using the hard break in method....No I am so happy....
